“Two can keep a secret if one of them is dead.”

Vesperia came to the clan as an adult, leaving little room to question where exactly she came from. Only the tell tale purple of her eyes told of her heritage from the Tangled Wood...where she frequently visits. With the voice of an angel, she loves to sit and sing under the moonlight, her shimmering pale hide causing her image to waver and appear nearly see through, as if she were a spirit.

No one dares enter her chamber however, even when she's gone. There are whispers, tiny mewling cries of young dragons from within...yet she shows utter disdain towards children within the clan, even her own. Which is strange considering her dolls and puppets sell so well to parents looking for something for their newborns to play with. No one knows how she manages to get her dolls so very life like though...

...

Don’t go near her, the adults whisper.

She’s cursed! Yelp hatchlings, cowering in a corner of the lair, as far away as they can get.

No, Vesperia is not the most loved dragon in the clan. She knows she deserves the treatment, given her past and her actions, but one day, she hopes…

It all started when she touched the Shade.

Everyone knew you weren’t supposed to go near the darkness. One drop on your skin and you’d be Shadetouched, blighted by evil and forced to do bad.

Vesperia had not heeded the warning. Despite everything she had been told, she pretended to be brave.

In the end, it had all been a dumb hatchling’s dare. The repercussions, however, went far beyond that.

The Shade twisted her personality.

Vesperia became sadistic and cunning: a far cry from her former carefree, generous self. Barbed lines twisted around her hide, leaving blackened marks similar to leopard spots.

The first night as a Shadetouched was hell.

She had still saved some of her true personality, and as she watched from within her body, trapped, she suffered with the knowledge that she had hurt others. Her claws moved without command to capture hatchlings from their nests; black magic wafted like smoke to turn the children to stone, felt, and crystal. Dragons they were no more. Instead, they became dolls, puppets and toys, which were then sold to others. Some dolls were sent to their parents, unseeing, unfeeling.

And she reveled.

Reveled in the pain, the angst, and the sorrow: glorified in the cries of the damned and the blank stares of the dolls she created.

And then, it ended.

Finally, someone figured out what Vesperia, as a minion of the Shade, had been doing. A team of Light dragons was sent to purify her and release her from the clutches of darkness.

Some say it worked, some say it didn’t.

The only dragon that knows for sure is Vesperia herself.

The pale Imperial, dotted and streaked in lavender remnants of her Shadetouched years, came upon a new clan that welcomed her with only slight aversion. There, she began a new life- yet the pull of the Shade remained strong, causing her to return to the Tangled Wood, the land of her birth, periodically.

Her main preoccupation, besides the simple creation of lifeless dolls, became singing beneath the stars, with her whitened hide quavering in the moonlight as if she was an intangible being of smoke. Children and adults alike stay far away from her and her living quarters; some say they have heard the sounds of hatchlings crying, but it must be a lie. After all, Vesperia despises children.

…right?
