personality
Captain is determined and incredibly compassionate. He tries his hardest to do his best, but he doesn't beat himself up when he doesn't meet the goals that he has set for himself. He's incredibly personable and gets along with everyone. Captain has also developed into a strong leader, though he does not lead anything in the clan (beside intramural activities). Others are likely to listen to him, and he's good at bringing two sides together.

history
[year four]
Captain found himself in the House of Windborne Sand after leaving his professional sports career. He loved playing the game, but it was time for him to stop playing and hand the reins to a younger generation. Instead, he decided to use his knowledge to teach the following generation to love sports and all kinds of activities. He accepted the job that the House had posted and eagerly began. But he got a little more than he had bargained for...

He met with Tobii early one morning, with his plan for the hatchlings of the clan.

"You want to what?" Tobii said suspiciously, eyeing the small coatl who had landed in front of her.

"I'd like to take the hatchies out and teach them games twice a week," Captain replied in the common tongue. The snapper looked at the pile of slowly waking babies and then back at the coatl. Her eyes narrowed.

"Are you sure about this?" she asked, looking back at the hatchlings again, where a young spiral who had "napped" by twisting himself around several other hatchlings was untangling himself and heading for the bamboo playground.

"Of course," Captain replied. "I was the captain of my world-class team - I know discipline and cooperation."

Tobii eyed Captain up and down one more time before walking off to her own rocky nest.

"When you need to bring them back, I'll be here..." She flopped to the ground and immediately fell asleep. At the sound of her snoring, all the hatchlings perked up and rolled out of the pile. Captain trotted into the yard, and flipped the whistle around his neck to his mouth. He blew it - one long note. All the hatchlings (save for two attention-deficient spirals) turned to look at him.

"Gather up young ones!" Captain called. The hatchlings, more out of curiosity than obedience, wandered over to him and sat in various ways. Even one of the spirals soared over and twisted himself around a young imperial's neck. Someone in the group sneezed.

"We are going to play a game."

Suddenly all attention was on him, eyes open and ears perked. Captain went through the rules thoroughly, then got the group to form a single line (he convinced the other spiral to pick one of the other imperials to travel around). When they were all as organized as young dragons can be, Captain led them out to one of the gardens that had been allowed to sit fallow this rotation. He had set up the point sticks at either end. The hatchlings divided themselves into two groups as he had explained before, and he smiled. So far this was going well.

He brought out the woven bamboo ball and all hell broke loose.

It started okay. A guardian took the ball and corralled it on her back with her wings and started making a dash for the opposite end. One of the imperials carrying a spiral stepped up suddenly to stop her. In doing so, he whipped the spiral out in one direction, who collided with two little faes who were trying not to play because they were smaller than the ball. The spiral screamed with glee as the two faes sailed across the field and hit a young skydancer in the face. She started to stamp around in pain and ended up stepping on the tail of a tundra. Meanwhile, the imperial slammed himself into the guardian in a full force tackle (which was illegal in the game; Captain had stressed this multiple times), which sent her careening into the other spiral-bearing imperial. The collision caused the spiral to loop herself wrong, and she ended up in a knot around the imperial's neck, choking her. The ball shot out from the fray and knocked a young pearlcatcher's pearl into the bamboo.

In the space of seconds, the entire field was in chaos. Some of the hatchlings were laughing. Most of the hatchlings were crying. And none of the hatchlings were listening anymore. Captain tried to get in between the bumping spat that had broken out between the guardian and the imperial who had bumped her, but he quickly figured out that he was outsized in that battle. He managed to get the spiral unknotted from around the other imperial's neck, and spent a few minutes looking for the lost pearl. In that time, the spirals had knotted themselves around the point sticks, the tundra had pinned the skydancer for stepping on his tail, and the two faes were making enough noise to draw the attention of nearby gardeners (who ignored them - taking care of the hatchings was not their problem).

Eventually Captain got everyone settled down enough to herd them back to Nursery while keeping fighting parties apart. Once they were inside the low stone walls they all separated back to their own areas, though the pouting continued in some corners. Tobii gave him a look, which he gave back and walked away.

Perhaps hatchlings required more skill than he had at the moment...
