"Have you ever heard of a shy species of dragons who live side by side with bees like no other dragon, taking care of them and making the absolute best honey in all of Sornieth? You haven't? They are called the Honeytummies, and they'll surely be one of the sweetest dragons you'll ever meet!"

- “In the beginning, there was a group of dragons living happily and peaceful between the lush trees and blooming fields of the Everbloom Gardens. They were elusive. Very secret. But they had an exquisite taste … for honey! They loved it so much that, at some point, their appearance changed and turned into something so much closer to the very thing they loved. Like the bees they cared for they worked hard at everything they set their minds to! And like the golden honey, their characters were sweet and loving; they only saw the very best in every being on Sornieth. They called themselves: “The First Hive”.

“As they would welcome all with open arms and never questioning them about their reasons… they were betrayed. The queen and king, the very soul of their community, were killed. Everyone else of their community shattered across the lands of Sornieth. The Hornets had destroyed their home and many lives were lost, either killed by the invaders or on the long journey to their new environments. But even as they got there, they weren't safe.

“You know, one group made home under the warm sun of the Sunbeam Ruins, others preferred the gentle breezes of the Windswept Plateau. Some traveled far and found their place in the tall trees in the Starfall Isles while others decided to make Dragonhome their home. They had many difficulties to overcome, but they had each other! And they had a calling: One day, they would come back to their lash fields in bloom and rebuild the Hive....“ -

“Mom!! Why do I have to listen to this story again? I’m not a hatchling anymore!”- Aster, a young Skydancer grimaced as he made his way through all the little ones sitting on the floor, listening attentively to the history lesson. Their eyes were glued to the lips of the hive’s queen. And, they did not appreciate their older hive-member ruining story time! Aster got some pretty annoyed looks from them as he was trying to exit the hatchling chamber.

The queen sighed and waved her son to wait for her outside while she’d finished the story. One she had told so many times. One that still deeply touched her heart. One, she wished for would have also carried some greater meaning to her child who was just rushing out. Aster wasn’t trying of being mean or disrespectful—the young dragon was just as kindhearted and hard working as any other Honeytummy within their small hive—, but the queen could still feel his suffering and how hard he tried to keep it to himself. As hard as it was for her, it was time.

The young dragon patiently waited for the queen to finish the story of their ancestors. He knew it inside out and he knew the ending. While the biggest hives were still located in Viridian Labyrinth, Sunbeam Ruins and Windswept Plateau, some had already managed to return to the Viridan Labyrinth and started to rebuild the First Hive.

His own home was nowhere near those places though. Their hive was located at the furthest south point of Sornieth: at the massive, frosted expanse of the Southern Icefield. An inhospitable terrain filled with ice and snow—a harsh place for any hive of Honeytummies to survive in. After a lot of trial and error they had found a way to grow a small number of sensitive flowers and plants inside the security and warmth of the hive, but those were—for the most part—meant for gathering and festive purposes as well as the main nutrition for the queen and king of the hive. A couple of smaller gardens with sturdier plants and flowers were kept in other chambers for all members’ enjoyment.

Each Honeytummy knew their place and purpose and would never complain about it. Aster himself was born a royal jelly Star Thistle and was a proud guard in training. He was part of those with a natural instinct to protect and keep the other peace loving members of the hive safe. And while everyone else was mostly dwelling inside the hive, he and the other warriors and guards would roam the outsides, looking for danger and keeping their eyes open for those in need of help.

The queen finally joined Aster and together they made their way towards one of the gardens.

“Aster, I had a word with your instructor. He and I wanted to talk... We aren’t sure… You are touched by ice—like all of us—but we noticed something alarming…“

She broke off, struggling for words. The young dragon started to get a sinking feeling. What was she trying to say? As she had mentioned his instructor it must have something to do with his training. He could still feel the freezing cold lingering in his wings, painfully throbbing every time Aster moved them ever so lightly. He ignored it.

“Dear, we noticed your body and wings are just not able to cope with the icy temperatures outside. And we know how much you love flying, stretching your wings and feel the wide open skies! You are suffering, and we thought about…-”

The young guard froze. “I’m very proud of my work! I’m just as hard working and determined as anyone else!

“That’s not what I was trying to say. We all know how much you love your calling." The queen tried to concentrate the young ones eyes onto her, but Aster kept on eluding her. "But you had to live the rest of your life INSIDE! We can't watch you keep suffering…”,

Once more the queen tried to calm Aster, to get him to focus on her voice. She could feel his confusion and how much it hurt him just to listen.

“I can deal with it!” Stubbornness was reflected in his eyes, a trait many Honeytummies possessed and what had kept them going after the great disaster. Still, this wasn't the time for that.

She shook her head. “Honey… we don’t want you to keep suffering all on your own. And whatever we do, it's not going to get better. Outside, your wings will keep freezing over until they shatter and crumble to ice crystals; and if you seclude yourself to only be inside... Aster, your soul will break sooner rather than later!”

Tears started to drip down Asters face. He knew what she was trying to tell him, but he just wanted to deny all of it! He wasn’t so weak as to leave his friends, family, his home, only because he couldn’t handle the weather!

“You are part of us. But we are compound by many individuals and I care about every single one of you. Wherever you might end up to, you will always be a proud guard of this hive!”

There was no good way of saying goodbye. Even though Aster thought of just leaving in the middle of the night—alone and without facing the rest of the family—, he couldn’t do it. He had to do it the right way.

And so they gathered in the little chamber Aster had called his own since the day he moved out of the hatchery. Every single member of the small hive came to help him ready the soil and to warm it up so they could start the ceremony: The young dragon planted an Azalea to symbolize gratitude to the hive that raised him, Arborvitae for everlasting friendship and Aster—his own namesake—for the love he received and had given. Lastly, the hive sowed Plumeria as a symbol of springtime which carried their hope of a good new beginning. It was a ceremony held in silence, as everyone embraced Aster one last time before he left the hive, the community behind he felt closest to; the land that raised him while casting him out in the end.

Still, he had to go of the past, free himself from the sensation of failure and disappointment so he could something new—a fresh look at the future, a new destination and all the wonderful possibilities it holds. Aster set off towards the Windswept Plateau.
