Magnus's Identity

Magician of Riddles
Rough WIP...
A blind spell caster who enjoys riddles. Has an easy-going, somewhat silly personality. He likes games and good company.

He is well-studied, and regarded as quite powerful. His spells and rituals can be quite far-reaching, but he is of almost no value in combat, his workings take too long, and none of them function as direct attacks. He's also blind and quite frail. He can supplement the effectiveness of the clan's warriors with magic, or mire and weaken enemies with carefully crafted curses, if he has sufficient time.

He has dedicated himself to defending the clan from magical threats.

His Plague-eyes are not eyes at all, though they may be some kind of sensory organ. They are hard as stone. A collection of jade nodes embedded in his face. They seem to be somewhat similar to a skydancer's jewel.

His familiar is a jade guardian – a massive living statue made of solid jade. It's rough hewn and somewhat resembles a bear. Most find it unnerving for reasons beyond that it is a huge living statue... there just seems to be something off about it.

He is quite particular about his belongings, and doesn't like people messing with his things. This is mostly because he is blind, but there does seem to be more to it than that as well.

He keeps on his person at all times a peculiar shard of black stone. It appears ugly and mundane, like a broken hunk of obsidian, though it does come to a nasty point on one side, though most don't see it.

Almost everyone in the clan of singing blood doesn't trust him.

He has a good relationship with his parents. Four isn't really capable of being a good mother in the long-term, and she doesn't always understand Magnus very well, but he loves her. He is closer with his father, who shares his propensity for magic. When Magnus was young, Fetch was the one who taught him and helped him experience the world. Fetch still helps him with things like reading from time to time, or with magical studies.

the 'armor' he wears was created by Villain. it acts as a portable prison.

Magnus's Story

The Lost Lighthouse
Four loved the sea, the great expanse of endless water, extending out seemingly forever in all directions, even downward. She rarely spent much time there, however, excuses to travel out to the farthest reaches of the Wandering Contagion were rare. Plague's elemental reach touched oceans at three points. The largest was the border with the Sea of a Thousand Currents, where the putrid cliffs rolled and tumbled, fouling the deep waters below them. There were a few places along the edge of the Reedcliff Ascent, broken by low and turbulent river ways of wild and pouring mist. Last, there was, at the northernmost edge of the Scarred Wasteland, a narrow wedge which separated the rocky shores of Dragonhome from the shredded and warped mountains of the Crystalspine Reaches. It was here where Magna's story begins, though it begins without him.

Four took every opportunity to visit the ocean and the sea. She would revel in rivers, but nothing was quite as satisfying as the endless depths of the ocean. One evening, while swimming in her hidden pool, the Seer Raldin came to rest at its edge. The water dragon enjoyed the pool, and visited often. Four did not mind his company. He spoke softly and had a deep and pleasant voice. He told her of an old lighthouse in the north. It had been built a long time ago, when the land was part of Earth's domain, and it had weathered improbably well over the ages. He had seen it, once, back when he could still see. A huge, squat thing, tilting precariously on a high cliff. All around it the land was marred by strange crystal formations, which had themselves been overtaken by a wild growth of plague corruption, as the Wandering Contagion rolled hungrily over it.

"It's foundations are sunk so deeply into the stone of that cliff, it is a monument and testement to the strength of Earth. It's has stood the test of time, the starry gale, and the bloody tide."

There were legends about the place, of course, of mad sorcerers and witchcraft. Any structure so old was bound to attract such, and the remnants of Arcane energy mixing with plague corruption was a potent combination. The reason Raldin had gone there was for the books. Within the structure was a rough and makeshift library of sorts. Some past tenant must have assembled the collection, a lifetime's worth of tomes, maybe more. Some of them were new, valuable offering brought by visitors to the place, but mostly they were were old. Very old. Preserved and undisturbed in their forgotten library by the sea.

Four was so enamored by Raldin's story of the place, she swore she would see it herself. She had no particular use for books. She could not read. Still the wild picture of the place which the old Seer painted with his words was enchanting. She loved seeing new and unique places. She had never visited the northern shore before.

After some time, arrangements were made. Raldin and his partner Loughrey would journey north with Four and her mate Fetch. They were far from the post powerful party to set out from the clan, but all were proven survivors, and knew well enough how to reach their destination safely.

Rough WIP....
fetch's familiar: a Red-Breasted Hainu named Plutonia. Manga's sibling is Stardust

At the lighthouse, Fetch remarks that he remembers seeing the place during a migration with his flock between dragonhome and the Starfall Isles. He and a small group were separated from the flock by a storm. the lighthouse had been lit and they attempted to use the light as guidance. it did get them close enough to shore to land, but the wind caught him and dashed him on the cliffs. he fell into the sea below and was left for dead.

he recalled having strange dreams and nightmares while his body lay under the waves near the shore, and when he awoke he had been transfigured. He returned to dragonhome in a stupor, where he was found by Four and Anna.

while at the lighthouse raldin has a vision of a stone island just beyond sight of the shore, unreachable save by following a particular route, which may be highlighted by the light of the sun. during the same night that Raldin had this vision, Four was taken by convulsions and mutations, and produced two eggs, which were quickly settled into a makeshift nest in the shelter of the lighthouse.

Fetch, feeling sure these events are related enlists Loughrey's help in searching the library for some relevant text. In his search, Loughrey finds an ancient scroll in a deep region of the lighthouse's foundation, where it connects to an older structure. He takes the scrolls to Raldin. Raldin cannot see the text, or anything else, but has an uncanny ability to decipher the written word, if someone nearby is communicating it to him. Unhelpfully, all that can be gleaned from the scroll is: "When the riddle begins. The story will end."

Fetch is frustrated by the lack of useful information, and worried about the state of his mate, and their eggs, which seem uniquely malformed. In his frustration, he decides to pursue Raldin's vision. He departs as the sun is just so, and follows its path out to sea, accompanied only by his familiar. The other two remaining behind to search the library further, and to protect the vulnerable nest and mother.

as the sun's light fades from the sky, fetch sees the stone island, glinting like fire with the last reflections of sunset, and accessible only for a short window, at this lower tide. investigating, he finds the small island is rough, and seaworn, but it's surface is cracked and split with veins of colored mineral. Jade. Following the mineral patterns across the surface he discovers a hole - perfectly circular, pierced through at the nexus of the jade vein. it is not worn or marred, but as if a section of the island had simply been lifted out of place by the precise hand of a god. its perfection is unnerving.

entering and descending, fetch comes to a chamber of solid jade deep within the earth. Vibrant and verdant, like a plant spouted from a seed - that seed is perhaps the thing at the center of the chamber. A spike of whispering blackness. When circled and tilted about, a facet within the obsidian spike shows itself to be highly reflective, as a mirror. Fetch can see himself in the mirror, but also other things. Strange shapes and figures which seem to watch just beyond the edge of perception. It is beautiful, and frightening.

Looking into the mirrored surface, Fetch is struck by a memory of the place, coming here and taking the mirror. The sound of the ocean far above brings it back to him - as it is a memory of the dream he had while dieing on the shore near the lighthouse. He takes the black mirror and flies out from the chamber, then hurries back to the lighthouse.

Sure and quick, with a favorable wind, he sails like a ray back to the other. None too soon it seems. The nest is disturbed, and all around it have sprouted fierce crystal rods, as if Arcane's elemental forces are trying to lay claim to the nest. One of the eggs has already been destroyed by the elemental encroachment. Four snarls at them, and has made efforts to shatter them before they grow too large, but it's clear they are overtaking her, and that if she continues to fight, she will be killed.

Fetch launches himself at the nest. Convinced the eggs are cursed anyway and in an effort to save Four, and get her to stop defending the nest, he stabs the remaining egg with the obsidian spike, the only piercing object he has on hand.

a powerful wave rolls out from the nest, shattering the Arcane crystals all at once. The hatching within the egg is not slain by his father's efforts, but kicks and flexes itself free of the ruined egg. It seems at first to have no face, but a mass of green nodes in place of it's head. The same color as the jade chamber out at sea. For several moments the parents and onlookers are stunned, but the little fae utters a small and lively wail.

The hatchling is cared for by the shore. The group unwilling to make the hard journey back to the clan with such a young dragon, so they extend their stay for a few weeks. Nothing else of note occurs, and aside from the unblinking mask of jade nodes embedded in his face, the new dragon seems healthy, and normal enough for a plague dragon.

Fetch bundles the mirror and hides it away among his belongings.

They return home.

Magnus lives with the clan for a long time. Growing into an influential figure among the fae in particular, but he was also greatly favored by the nobility, and by the queen. He is completely blind, and a skilled sorcerer.

The obsidian artifact remained hidden, and nearly forgotten in the keep of Magnus's father.

a long time later, on fetch's birthday, Magnus went to his father's room to give him a gift, but fetch was not there. before he left the room magnus heard a strange and alien whispering, and was compelled to investigate the source. he discovers the spike of black stone wrapped in a bundle at the bottom of an old chest.

turning it over in his hands he finds its mirrored surface, which shines light across his sightless face. the jade nodes embedded there contract, and are covered with lids like eyes. holding the artifact he becomes aware of a presence within... or on the other side of it. With his eyes closed he is able to see the reflection in the mirror - a strange and startling new phenomenon. captivated by the whispers, he takes the black artifact and hides it on his person.

he then goes down to the nesting chamber, where his mother has settled a nest. She is not attending the nest at the time (she and fetch are at the reflecting pool, spending time together for fetch's birthday) - the eggs are left in the care of the Broodwatcher. The ridgeback know magnus and allows him to move freely about the chamber and go to the nest of his new young siblings.

Magnus blindly investigates the eggs, caressing each in gentle examination. He closes his eyes - it takes a lot of effort to do so - and he can see each hatchling in the egg. "It came a long way to reach me, father, and here is a much better, a much greater gift. Such a surprise for you, on your birthday."

Magnus took the obsidian mirror and held it like a knife. He cut open THE egg. It was the right one, he knew. The Broodwatcher had not started towards him, not suspected anything strange or foul of Magnus.

A wave of force burst forth, so heavy and loud that it shook the rafters in the Keep above.

The Broodwatcher was thrown into the far wall. Magnus took up the hatchling in his arms and knew it was like he was, with the same jade nodes for eyes. "You will see Truth." Magnus whispered.

The Broodwatcher gathered himself, but Magnus was already moving, sweeping out of the nesting chamber... and out of the Keep.

An alarm was sounded.

Several dragons went to pursue Magnus. he was not far away because he was not flying. He was walking. The ground under him became warped and twisted with his passage. Wild growth of corrupt flesh leapt up, eager and invigorated. A rumble from below, and then a burst of green stone erupted out of the growth, scattered around Magnus's path like jade saplings, reaching eagerly up towards the sky.

Magnus held the hatchling aloft, as if an offering to the sky itself, which had begun to bend - a perfect circle cut through the clouds and atmostphere - a black disk above. the unobstructed night sky.

None of the dragons could reach him. The Queen watched the scene unfold from her high tower. She rushed though the Keep to find Four and Fetch.

The King went down before Magnus, and attempted to reach the wild fae. Plague growth and jade claws tore at him, ruining his body as it healed. He attacked Magnus with powerful light magic, blinding and burning, injuring Magnus. The warped ground retaliated, wounding the king and hurling his mutated body into the wall of the keep.

Four and fetch reached the scene. togather they make it through the circle of wild growth and jade to Magnus. doing so they are changed. Fetch disincorporates - disintegrating into a red mist of searching eyes. Four does likewise, but as a roiling mass of limbs, wings, tails, tentacles, and teeth.

the shard of black stone resonates with the sky, a voice only Magnus can hear - the things want something from him - they are infinite and dark and beyond the stars now visible above.

They want him. Special emissary, and his new brother to whom he is bound. They will give, and they will take – Four and Fetch both mere sacrifices for his ascension - his brother to remain on Sornieth to execute his will.

Shade-Things? Star-Creatures? existing out in the hungry dark... or behind it.

Four cries out with a dozen mouths, and tries to pull him back with just as many limbs. Fetch looks to the hatchling with its blind jade mask. Incorporeal, transfigured, he surrounds his new son, born on the same day as he, and they are the same, and he gives the hatchling sight – and it can see the open wound in the sky, and it shrieks with fear.

Magnus is shaken by their efforts. The Star-Things who would destroy them and lay claim to him. the tiny hatchling in his arms, an unwilling participant now that it can see.

Magnus listens to the voices, the ones who made a deal with his father when fetch lay dying on the shore. He then answers them, not replying to what they are saying, but with the first contrary thing he can come up with. Mere denial would not be enough. He could not overpower them so directly.

He shouted up at the sky a riddle, as if ignoring everything they had to say and offer. It was absurd.

And the ring in the sky twisted shut. The resonant chorus silenced. Fetch and Four restored lay at his feet. A squalling child in his arms. Tucked away in the folds of his clothes, the black shard whispered ever on.

The jade altar remains. It is visible from some of the high towers of the keep on days that are reasonably clear. Looking down at it while in flight, it looks very much like the swollen green growths which make up the primal eyes of plague – the pattern in which the jade nodes on Magnus's face grew.

Magnus does not remember much about the aftermath. The clan's warriors all stood around the area. The sky closed, and the earth settled, and they might have rushed in to tear him apart if the queen had not spoken to the contrary. He walked down to her. He did not collapse, but moved in a daze, stumbling from blindness over the uneven terrain.

He studies the black shard. The obsidian spike. He can still see in its mirrored surface. The Star-Things are still beyond it, their voices and presence influencing the world. They have other agents. Magnus does not think that his actions have truly hindered them. He might have taken their offer, ascended and destroyed all he loved... and their machinations would have rolled on. He did not... but still their machinations roll on. He will not get another offer, but that doesn't mean he wont serve them, intentionally or not. He decides he will protect the mirror. It should not leave his keeping and fall into the hands of a more willing agent, or slip away to some place where the whispers might influence dragons or creatures who cannot hear them. He can hear them, and knows what they are, so he can protect himself.

He does not yet know the nature of the things. They seem to wait eternal. They seem to hunger in the dark. He does not know what riddle he gave them. Would they try and solve it? Would it matter if they did?

There is a lot he does not know, but he must find out.
