Biography

Grabal the Abomination

Sometimes dragons that don't know better, they don't take Minstri seriously. Grabal, though, they take him seriously. It seems backwards to me - very funny.

Trail of the Bloodstained Coat

Tomb of Ice
Grabal was born to a small clan in the Frigid Floes. Though he was never given a name by his birth clan. His father moved to that clan after his birth, and it is a shame that the nameless little Tundra never met his Grandmother Murmur. Things might have turned out differently.

Though descended from Plague dragons, Trauma wanted nothing to do with the grim flight. The icelands were a Tundra's true home, in his opinion. So when his son, who looked a great deal like him, had a foul disposition and opinions tending towards the Plaguebringer, Trauma was notably… unhappy. He refused the youngling a name until such a time when he could behave properly as an ice dragon.

Both dragons certainly look more the part of Plague, and perhaps that was the reason for Trauma's strong denial. With tan and pink fur filled with patterns that make the pair look perpetually bloodsoaked, they would have been well camouflaged in the contagion. The unnamed son didn't know this, but he certainly felt it. Felt the apartness. Felt resentment from and for his father.

When the clan and his father became too much to bare he climbed up to the top of the lair and sat along, brooding, stewing. His thoughts chased themselves around in vicious circles. He was filled with the hate and angst of the young. He came to the top of the lair many times, and it was on these trips he noticed faults in the ice. A terrible thought came to him as he examined those faults.

So came the day when he could no longer take his father's constant badgering and disappointment and hateful condescension. He climbed one final time to the top of the lair - the rest of the clan was used to his storming off in that way. What he never did while up there was speak, so when, perhaps half of an hour later, the clan heard a shout from above, they were perplexed.

"Father, Father! You love nothing but ice, so die in her embrace!"

It wasn't until a horrid cracking was heard that they realized his shout was a threat. Several clan members attempted to fly up to him and stop him, but by the time they reached the top, the entrance to the lair was collapsed and the young tundra gone.

It is unknown if the dragons inside the lair survived or not. They have not been heard from since.

So he departed, fleeing north.

Joining the Hunters
The nameless tundra was found by a mirror dragon - Pyroclast. He was found alone on the ice, half starved. Pyroclast took him underwing and brought him to a lair - a tiny borrow in the ice belonging to the hunter and to an exiled Pearlcatcher, Sliver.

Pyroclast was a skilled hunter, who had endured plenty of altercations with clan dragons. The tundra shared his story, leaving out the part where he collapsed the lair of his clan. Pyroclast raised him, and gave him a name of sorts "Red". Pyroclast was fierce, passionate and unapologetic. Most importantly, Pyroclast accepted Red. That's all that really seemed to matter.

The three were an unusual band of hunters, going where ever food was plenty and there was fun to be had.

Grabal the Disciple
One morning while traveling, they overheard a voice. It was soft and feminine and the syllables contained a constant, rolling and flowing rhythm. They followed the sound to a group of plague mirrors. The little dragons were seated on stones and lounged in the grass, three of them listening enraptured to the fourth. The fourth mirror was Minstri, and the band of hunters was also enraptured by her stories. They joined the audience and sat and listened.

So did they become her first disciples.

Coming back to the Contagion, Red felt a sense of comfort. He had never set foot there, never seen the place, but on arriving he felt at home. He lay upon the ground and breathed a sigh of relief.

Time went by and more and more dragons came to the new clan. Red established himself quickly, taking a liking to beating down all dragons who even suggested an opposition to Minstri. He was her attack dog. He was the enforcer of her will.

On a moonless night, Minstri came to him with a whisper.

"You know my stories - oh. From them I have a name for you. The name of a strong creature. One with twisted flesh and vast reach. A leviathan. An Abomination."

So she named him "Grabal".

"You serve as my claws, you serve as my teeth. You serve to protect all that is mine. You serve and carry out my will. You are my Abomination."

With that she reached out and touched him, bestowing a blessing on him. His fur shed in great clumps and he grew in size and shape, not a tundra dragon - that belongs on the ice, but a guardian, bound to his queen and her lair. His skin was covered in open sores and ever bleeding creases. What had before been patterns on his fur were made manifest across his scales. He stretched his wings broad over both of them with relish.

"I am your guardian."
