____In the land of the Plaguebringer, there is one law: kill or be killed. Survival of the fittest is the norm, and if you are not strong enough to survive on your own, you will quickly be cut down. As the weakest hatchling in a large nest, the odds were stacked against me from the very beginning. My siblings were the first to be fed, got first choice of the nests, and received more attention than I ever did. I slept wherever I could, ate the scraps after the rest were fed, and was lucky to get any approval whatsoever from my parents. I am sure they expected me to die quickly – it is not uncommon for weaker hatchlings to be picked off in plague territory. It is not seen as a tragedy, but rather as a rightful part of the cycle of life.
Of course, I did not know of this harsh reality at the time. I thought that if I could prove I was strong, my family would see my worth and give me the love and attention I craved. My “brilliant” idea was to go hunting alone, bring back enough prey to feed the entire nest, and secure my spot as a valuable member of the lair. I didn’t really consider the fact that most creatures were larger than me, nor that I had never caught anything larger than a moth. The only powerful thing about me was my foolish confidence.
The ambush came quickly and was over in a few seconds. I did not see them, but I felt sudden pain spiking through my back and hind legs. Before I could turn, pain tore through my face as well. Through muffled hearing, I heard someone say, “Ha, dragons never cease to amaze me with their sheer stupidity. Letting a child wander around alone? Let this serve as a lesson to them.” Their laughter faded into the distance as they left. It seemed they didn’t kill me on purpose; they wanted other dragons to see me, to show them the dominance of Beastclans. At the time, I didn’t think about that. I just wanted to go home. I managed to drag myself to the entrance of the lair before I blacked out.

____I awoke for a few brief moments in the dead of night. The blurry silhouette of a healer towered above me, saying, “He’ll live, barely. This eye will be blind, his hind legs will be permanently crippled, and that face…well, it’s mangled beyond repair.” Another voice scoffed, one I soon recognized to be my mother. She would care for me, right? “Lovely. Such a disappointment. He’s weak, disobedient, crippled…it would have been better if he had never been born. I want nothing to do with him!” Before I lost consciousness once again, I felt despair consuming me.
The second time I woke up, I was able to remain conscious. I had been left at the edge of the nest, still bloody and torn. The healer had given me a few bandages, but it was clear that little care had been taken to ensure my survival. Now that I knew my mother’s true feelings, I could no longer bring myself to face her. I would run away! Someone would care for me…someone would love me…someone would…
I couldn’t walk. I couldn’t hunt. I could barely breathe. I had dragged myself into the depths of the wild, but there was nothing I could do to take care of myself. Was this really how I would die, worthless and alone? What had I done to deserve this? I had always tried to please my family, and I had prayed to the Plaguebringer to make me stronger every night. Had even she forsaken me?
Nearly dead from blood loss and hunger, I could do nothing when something began dragging me away into a cave. The pain, which had dulled up until this point, returned with a vengeance. Weeks passed in a haze of agony. Sometimes the mysterious creature would force me to eat, holding up my head so that I was able to swallow. Gradually, the pain began to disappear. The hungry ache in my stomach faded away, until one night I regained full consciousness. What had been done to me? I could walk again, but there was no feeling in my hind legs. My blind eye once again had vision, but everything was covered in a haze of red. When I stumbled and hit my head against the side of the cave, I heard a metallic cling. Inspecting my body, I realized the truth – I had been partially transformed into a robotic being.
In the mouth of the cave, a dark silhouette appeared. I could not tell what type of dragon it was, but the bright teal eyes that pierced the darkness revealed the element of lightning. After a moment it spoke, its voice eerie and emotionless and its gender unclear.

____"I am done. You will get used to it soon. Do not follow me.” It turned to leave before I could respond, stopping one last time before fading into the shadows. “Every tainted being has a right to be alive, especially such a young one.”
I was confused and unsteady. Walking was difficult, as I had to judge where my feet would land without feeling them. My vision was perfect, but the strange coloration took time to get used to. Sometimes the hot sun would heat the metal on my face, and water would sizzle when I tried to drink it. Despite the uncomfortable differences, one thing was clear: I was much, much stronger. Metallic legs had no shortage of energy, and I discovered my new eye was perfect at scanning the undergrowth for prey. My claws and horns were as sharp as a blade, and I made quite the intimidating picture even though I was not full-grown. It seemed the Plaguebringer had answered my prayers after all.
Joy filled me as I realized I the golden opportunity I was presented with. Now that I was capable of surviving on my own, my clan had no reason to reject me. Surely they would welcome me back! I traveled for a few days, the journey seeming much easier this time despite the distance. I knew I couldn’t have gotten far when I was wounded, so I assumed the lighting mechanic had taken me quite far. The first dragon I saw was my mother, alone in the familiar shape of our nest. “Mother! Mother! Look at me! Look how strong I am!”
My eagerness soon gave way to dread as I saw not appreciation, but horror on her face. “You…you should be dead. What have you done to yourself?” I took a step closer uncertainly, my voice shaky. “Someone helped me, mother! I can fight now. I can make you proud!” She backed away as I stepped closer, her eyes narrowing in anger. “You are a monster! We are meant to survive with the skills we are born with, not cheat death with metal and wires. This is unnatural and a disgrace!” I fled just before she swiped at me with her claws, outraged at being rejected once again. I had done so much for her! How could she cast me out?

____I decided to confront her one last time. We met at the mouth of the lair, her expression darkening with disgust as soon as I appeared. “I thought I made myself clear. You are unwelcome here!” My voice shook with anger as I shouted back at her. “I tried so hard to be strong for you! What have I done to deserve this?!” A branch snapped and I turned to see my siblings, their eyes filled with fear. Were they afraid of…me? No! I took a step toward them, but my father’s shadow fell over me and stopped me in my tracks. “Father? I…wait!” I flew into the air, barely escaping as my father charged at me with bared fangs. It was then that I finally got the message. They were my family no longer.
I was devastated. Tears filled my eyes as I unsteadily flew out of their territory, still trying to gain my balance due to the heavy metal encasing my hind legs. Where would I go now? No one cared about me…unless…the mechanic. They hadn’t known me, but they had shown me mercy. They were my only hope. I would find them, and perhaps find a place to live in the process. There was nothing left for me here.
