Part III: The Eel

The next day, Ya was feeling much better for having gotten an ample amount of rest, and in addition to his slumber, his meal of shellbugs yesterday had restored a decent portion of his energy. It would probably be some time before he was 100%, but it was at the very least a good start on finding his way back home. Now that he could maneuver about more – though still at a painfully slow pace, as his limbs went on strike and protested his movements – Ya got to work on doing something about his damaged wing. It was something of a shabby fix for a brace, with vines wrapped around one of the broken logs to secure the wing’s arm, but it would do for now.

Although he had made sure to keep an eye out, the golden eel hadn’t returned after the incident yesterday, which disheartened Ya. He would have liked the company, even if it was just a fish; it was at least better than being alone in this cold, bitter swamp, but he supposed there was nothing to be done about a fish’s whims. Soon he would have to find shelter, some place that wasn’t so open and exposed, to give the wing enough time to heal properly and straight, and from there, figure out how to get back to his clan.

The storm could have very well blown him much farther off course than he would have known about. It was indeed the mire, but where in it? And what direction should he go, once he could get off the ground? Ya had not a clue, but he figured he could cross that bridge when he—well, if he—managed to get to it. One thing at a time, really. For now, he needed a place less vulnerable; luck had thus far been on his side to keep the dangers away, but there was no telling when a creature might decide to attack him.

Slinking off into the swamp, Ya endeavored to find anything that could be more suitable than his current environment, but it was as if the more he searched, the less cover and dry land he found, and his quest was beginning to look fruitless indeed. It would have been better to have simply stayed where he had been, rather than to tire himself out and find nothing that helped! “This is just terrible,” he moaned, “I wish I had never gone out on this stupid journey in the first place!”

Slumping down in defeat, Ya flicked some nearby pebbles into the water idly, having not a clue what to do at this point. The water suddenly stirred, and a familiar form swam towards him, gazing up at him with its tiny face and flowing frills.

“Oh, you again. Why didn’t you come back sooner?” Ya grumbled indignantly, wondering if he was even talking to the same eel as before. It flattened some of its frills, then, and dived back into the water, darting away. “Aw—come on, wait a moment, geez, sorry. I didn’t mean it like that.” Upon hearing his words, it turned, watching him. “I guess it would have been hard to find me, since I’m not even where I was anymore...” he mumbled to himself, “I don’t even know where I am anymore; this whole swamp just looks the same, and I could have been going in circles for all I know.”

The eel seemed to nod thoughtfully – or was it just bobbing its head randomly? Ya couldn’t tell. “I don’t suppose you’d know the way, I mean you’re just a fish.” And again it bobbed its head, making Ya feel very much as if it was just some kind of instinctual movement for the creature rather than it actually responding to what he was saying. Like it so often did, it swam away again, and Ya couldn’t help but blurt out, “Wait, where are you going?”

He felt pretty silly, talking to a fish like this. It probably wasn’t even the same eel – that would be too much of a coincidence, wouldn’t it? It hadn’t gotten far before it resurfaced, peering out of the water at him, and suddenly flicked its head in a way that was rather akin to a gesture to come toward it. Ya simply stared at it skeptically, “What makes you think I’m about to wade into that murky, cold water again? I’ve had enough of that today, thank you.”

The answer to his rather rhetorical question was met with a deep, menacing snarl, almost prompting another retort from him when it suddenly occurred to him that fish don’t snarl; it wasn’t coming from the eel’s direction, and he suddenly clamped his mouth shut, afraid to turn to see what had made the noise. But when it came again, louder, and much closer to him, he didn’t have much of a choice, and quickly glanced sideways, and saw... well, teeth. A lot of them. And an angry toridae not many feet away, its poisonous tail poised ominously above its head, waiting to strike.

That was all the prompting Ya needed before he shot off into the water ahead of him, hoping that the toridae wouldn’t want to get itself wet. Apparently, he underestimated the determination of the creature, and it followed him, snapping its jaws angrily. He supposed the wildlife here must be pretty aggressive and angry, with dragons invading their territory quite frequently, and attacking them on a regular basis. It was no wonder the toridae would go to great lengths to reclaim what it felt was its.

Ya saw the yellow-frilled eel take off swimming as well, and it zipped over to the right quickly. Without thinking, he mimicked its movement, following it through the water as they both tried to lose their pursuer. The toridae continued to chase them, snapping in Ya’s direction every chance it managed, and the spiral blessed the Plaguebringer for at least gifting him with speed and agility, even if he lacked in the ability to face the creature head-on like those trainer dragons could.

Eventually, its interest in the pair seemed to dwindle off, and it finally gave up the chase. Perhaps they had reached the edge of its territory, or maybe it wanted to find easier prey. Either way, Ya was both thankful it had desisted and utterly exhausted at this point, wanting nothing more than to curl up somewhere where he wouldn’t be eaten by the next angry toridae. The eel swam by his leg, brushing up against it, startling Ya and reminding him that the little creature was still there, to his surprise.

“Oh, hey, you’re still around. That was kind of scary back there, wasn’t it? Well... then again, you live here. I guess you encounter scary pretty often. Good thing you can swim so fast... I wonder where we are now...” Ya rumbled, gazing around at his new surroundings. There was land up ahead, and strange ruins that he didn’t recognize at all scattered about it, like the remains of some ancient building or civilization. Whatever it was, it would make a good shelter for the night, he thought, and began to stride forward, eager to have some place to rest. Hopefully, nothing hostile lived within these ruins, but after the events of the day, he wasn’t too optimistic the odds would be in his favor.

Stepping inside, a warmth enveloped him, ending the chill of the swamp, and he looked curiously at artifacts that were strewn about, his eyes coming to rest on a peculiar jar, shaped with a dragon’s head, with ornate markings rimming its surface. A little stream of water ebbed its way into the building from the cracks in the walls and the surrounding marsh, crossing in front of where the ancient dragon urn rested. Before he could take his eyes off it, the golden eel came swimming through the trickle of water, stopping in front of the artifact, and raising its head to it, inclining the fins, in a manner that Ya was beginning to suspect was more than deliberate.

Without warning, the eel popped, dissipating into the air as a thousand tiny scintillating sparks, like golden stars shimmering skyward. They drifted into the urn, disappearing as they touched its worn, smooth surface. The lid of the urn raised and fell off, the ash inside it swirling above and amassing in the air. Ya didn’t know how to react, too stunned by profound confusion to do more than cower in the corner of the room, staring at the shadowy ash flowing in the air in front of him.

The ash began to take a shape – his shape, even, forming into a spiral dragon much like himself. Darkness fell from its skin, as if shedding a cloak, and the golden sheen of the eel shone through, with bright red wings that matched his equally red eyes – a child of the Plaguebringer, then, and hopefully a friendly one.

“Hello there,” it spoke benevolently, calmly, as it swirled in place, “I am nothing but a shade of my former self, but I have guided you here, away from the dangers of the mire. Rest, now, and make yourself at home.”

Part IV: Home

Over the course of the next days, Ya explained to the spiral – who insisted on being called “Shade” – his predicament, and Shade watched over him as he continued to make his recovery. Ya found himself admiring the spiral, for he was very wise, and seemed to know more than any dragon Ya had ever met. Ironically, though, Shade seemed quite young – maybe even younger than Ya was now, and it made him wonder how the spiral had come into the way it was now, and what had happened.

Whatever was the case, the dragon chose not to disclose that particular information, only stating that he regretted not being able to do more. As Ya’s health improved, and his wing strengthened again, he found that he had become friends with the lone spiral, and hoped that Shade would agree to come with him on his journey back to his clan.

Curious to meet these other dragons, and seeming to have a fondness for Ya as well, he agreed to join him on his flight once he was ready, and together, the two navigated the winds, Shade having considerable knowledge of the area, and able to point out landmarks that allowed him to know their location and direction. When they finally managed to reach the clan’s lair, they were both received with welcome and joy.

Ya had learned his lesson, to not be so reckless as he had been, which was the very cause of his entire situation in the mire, and had gained a friend despite his troubles. Shade was a relief to the rest of the clan, managing to keep Ya (mostly) out of trouble, and out of their wings, while simultaneously taking Ya under his own, becoming not only a companion to the energetic spiral, but a teacher and a mentor as well.

And that is how Ya was guided through the mire by the great golden eel.

TRIVIA
  • Shade's mate is Ya; any other dragons he has been bred with are not canon to my clan lore and are only a gameplay mechanism to me. I'm also fully aware that linking the "range" he has with Ya is completely pointless... or is it?!
  • This dragon is the second "incarnation" of this character; he was originally a Maize/Red/Thistle dragon (#349801) instead. This dragon was name-changed before exalting to preserve Shade's name as being unique.
  • Shade's name is in no way related to the menacing entity from Flight Rising's lore. In canon to my lair's lore, his name does occasionally confuse others; however, they quickly get over any uncertainty they might have had after realizing that Shade is actually quite nice and pleasant to be around.
  • Shade is a spirit / ghost and must stay within a general vicinity of his urn / remains. This range is actually quite large, but Ya typically carries Shade's urn around if they need to move any long distances as it's not very heavy.
  • As demonstrated in the story, Shade can also take the form of a little golden eel, although now that he is in the company of many other dragons he tends not to do this as it could cause issues for him.
