Biography

Tonukk
Gambler
Chaotic Good

PkKAmaj.png
Tonukk is a blessed dragon, with incredible luck that would carry him to great heights if he set his mind to it. Not that he has, instead preferring to win small amounts of treasure in games of chance in the clan's tavern. Never take a bet against him, no matter how improbable his success seems. Considering he once dumped a bag of coins on the floor and they all turned out heads, it's just not worth it.

An adventurous soul, Tonukk undertook quite the journey to reach the clan, and regales other dragons with (probably false) stories of dashing heroism. Tonukk's not a coward, and he'd be out there exploring Sornieth... if he wasn't also a pacifist. He could probably talk his way out of most things, but if things come to blows, he just doesn't have the stomach to do what must be done.

Lady Luck blesses Tonukk in more than just games. Once, an experiment went awry and blew up a significant chunk of the fortress, including Tonukk's sleeping quarters. Most assumed the worst, but after clearing out the rubble Tonukk was found unharmed, a set of bookcases having toppled over and formed a shelter. Tonukk was grateful for the rescue, and rather annoyed that it was too dark to read anything for the hours he was trapped.

And that's not all. He's survived fires, been the only one not to be poisoned by Levant's cooking, and has never once been randomly chosen to test Sorrel's potions. If one didn't know better, one might think that Tonukk made a deal with a demon to get his supernatural luck. But that's ridiculous. He did hatch in a cargo hold filled with relics plundered from some dusty old temple, that's true. But honestly though, who hasn't done that? Elliry has gone on record saying that Tonukk's unusual and mildly unsettling red eyes are not a sign of anything to worry about.

He'd be useful as a good luck charm, expect that he's got a very self-centred form of luck. Taking Tonukk with you somewhere dangerous seems like a good idea, until you realize that the best thing for Tonukk is for you to quickly meet an unlikely end so that he can go back home as soon as possible.

Such unnatural luck has attracted unwanted attention. Mostly in the form of Reina, who Tonukk is afraid of for many reasons, not limited to the fact that she's many times his size. She also insults him every time they pass by each other, and likes to disrupt his gambling games by 'accidentally' flipping his table with her tail. Also he suspects she's tried to have him killed on multiple occasions. But those all failed, so they don't really count, right? Tonukk almost thinks that she might be jealous of him. That's nonsense though, because Reina can't be jealous of anyone else when everyone else is less important to her than the dirt on her claws.

Surprisingly, he does actually know how to use that sword. He would really prefer not to though. Really. He'd happily give you the sword if it meant he didn't have to stab you with it. And then claim that somehow means he's the winner of that fight.

Hatched to pirates, Tonukk's considerable luck has served him well for as long as he has lived. Left alone in a ship's cargo hold as hatchlings, the young Tonukk and his brother found themselves with an escaped umbra wolf. His brother sustained grievous injuries from the mauling before help could arrive, while Tonukk escaped with only a mangled left leg.

Tonukk survived, but as pirates aren't much for child-rearing, the next time the boat reached port he was placed for sale at an auction house. His brother was not. A spiral healer stayed to take care of him, and spun tales of her life as a pirate aboard the Crowned Thresher, the very same ship Tonukk was from. But when that ship returned, not only did his brother not return with it, but the spiral left as well.

His new guardian at the auction house did little more than keep him alive and his leg uninfected, and thus Tonukk had to learn how to take care of himself. Some older dragons were more kind, treating the nocturne well enough and even allowing him to watch their games. As he grew, Tonukk proved to be a quick study, and his luck even allowed him to make a tidy sum off these gambling games. Eventually, he even had enough treasure to buy his own freedom. But with hopes of his brother and the Crowned Thresher's return still lingering in his dreams, the newly freed Tonukk didn't leave the auction house far behind, instead staying close to port and the gambling tables.

As his winnings piled up, Tonukk became known as Lucky around the auction house, and eventually the entire port. The rumours became so great that Tonukk eventually woke up to find his head covered and one of his toes on his lame left leg cut off, presumably due to someone's belief that even pieces of him were lucky.

Seeking to keep the rest of himself in one piece, but having spent a bit too much of his winnings on fine clothes and a fancy sword, Tonukk booked himself cheap transport with a coatl weaponsmith. To Tonukk's alarm, the coatl turned out to both be a smuggler and not particularly concerned with giving the nocturne safe transport. But after a close call with some bounty hunters, possibly both caused and averted by Tonkk's luck, the smuggler deemed him useful enough to deserve safe passage to the coatl's home in the Starfall Isles.

There, Tonukk quickly separated himself from the smuggler, and just as quickly found himself in the local tavern, back at the gambling tables. After a week or two there, as he had nowhere else to go, the barkeep suggested he stay, as travellers seemed to like him and he had a knack for keeping the dice rolling and the drinks flowing. Tonukk accepted, as he was winning enough treasure to sustain himself. That, and the barkeep was offering him living quarters in one of the inn's spare rooms, as it had far more than could ever be expected to be booked.

Thus Tonukk is living there until a better opportunity presents itself, and can often be found, when not gambling, entrancing local hatchlings with tales of swashbuckling pirates and adventure. Endboss particularly likes those stories, though the fact that her favourite bits are the parts where the pirates destroy small clans and steal all their stuff worries Tonukk more than a bit.

Through a Hole mistaken for a common gemstone, the hatchling's plea for help was Heard.

Tonukk (Lucky)
"What do you say, lads, to another gamble?"

"Doesn't he seem a bit...cocky to you?"
I hope the morning fairs well to you! I know it has for me. Have you stopped by our table to play a round of Magic Hand or were you just passing through? Either way, please, allow me to buy you a drink so that your day might become better!
The name's Tonukk, but you can call me Lucky, everyone does. I'd rather not keep you though, I imagine you have a plethora of errands to run and I have no intention on burdening you. Don't mind the stein, I'll buy the tavern a new one so that you might go about your business. Farewell!

History
Hatched alongside his brother, Scree and nearly enduring the same fate as him, Tonukk was considered lucky. The umbra wolf that had gotten loose in the cargo hold, while their parents were on deck, attacked Scree instead of Tonukk because he was closer. By the time Laveer heard the screeches, Scree was fighting for the remains of his life as the wolf started to attack Tonukk. The nocturne suffered less than his sibling having gotten away with scratches, bruising, and a mangled leg. Despite it being treated, Tonukk would never be the same again.
The ship had made port while their wounds had been taken care of and Tonukk was carefully taken off of the ship in order to find him a safer place to thrive. Of his brother, he heard nothing. Under the care and watchful eye of Lana, Tonukk was placed for sale at the auction house while Lana made sure his leg was healing properly. Yet, few even cast an eye on the hatchling. His colors hadn't been appealing and his injured leg meant that he'd never be able to perform most tasks without difficulty.
To Tonukk, the warm, talkative company of the spiral helped him to forget the place he was at but it didn't remove the energy hatchlings were gifted with. She spun tales of her adventures on the
Crowned Thresher and filled the nocturne's mind with seaspray and cutlasses. Her leaving was a bitter mark of Tonukk's life. She left his caretaker, a grizzled old guardian healer with instructions on how to care for his leg but aside from that, the guardian did nothing else.
By the time Tonukk reached adulthood, no one had adopted him yet. He had taken to playing games with other dragons "on the block" and found that he had a certain amount of luck most did not.
The dragon was able to save up enough gold to purchase himself before he started to go from tavern to gambling ring making the most of his "gift". Rarely did the nocturne lose and when he did, he shrugged it off and kept playing. He earned the nickname, Lucky, around the auction house and dressed as well as his winnings could afford him (minus the required walking stick if he felt the need to walk upright).
During one evening while sleeping outside of a tavern, his head was covered and one of his toes on his lame left leg was cut off. Tonukk was never able to figure out who had done it but word of his luck had spread and someone thought taking a piece of him would give them the luck. Concerned and wary, Tonukk decided to find a clan to call his own to avoid losing any other digits or worse.
Despite his crippled state, Tonukk can get around fairly well on three legs, but he considers himself more sophisticated on two and hobbles along with anything that can keep him upright (cane, sword, stick).
Aside from being lucky, Tonukk has been able to entrance hatchlings in tales told to him from Lana and takes delight in making them happy. He's able to make friends easily and doesn't hold grudges often. The nocturne has never looked back on where he was hatched but uses the story of his survival to explain where his 'luck' came from. His nickname would follow him wherever he goes as tales of him have reached more than just the ears of the locals.
