Biography

Kushiel
Clan Founder|Fashionista
Neutral Good

PkKAmaj.png
Kushiel claims to study the science of fashion, whatever that means. The only thing anyone can agree on is that he looks absurd when he's parading around in his newest outfit. Anyone who visits him will end up experiencing at least one wardrobe change, whether they like it or not.

He's a respectable tailor as well, and has made nearly all of his outfits himself. To the relief of the clan, he's mostly stuck to normal materials such as cloth and various metals, but the occasional fruit jewellery has slipped in. Not that his more absurd ideas are solely his responsibility, for Kushiel likes to take inspiration from his clanmates. Whether they're offering or not. Kushiel will talk about clothes and clothes-making techniques for hours to anyone who will listen, and if they happen to make an offhand comment about something, well, then it's their fault when they wake up to a gift of an overcoat with embroidery of radioactive green buttersnakes around the edges.

Supposedly he joined the clan shortly after it was founded, as he had been following Invernale so that he could ask her whether the purple or green accents went better with his outfit. No records of her response have been kept.

Kushiel will make outfits for any dragon, even one many, many times larger than himself. His small size allows him to get incredibly fine details in his embroidery, but nobody is quite sure how he manages to deal with the massive amounts of fabric. And last time Invernale checked on him while he was sewing they both ended up drowning in an imperial's worth of cloth, so many of the smaller dragons aren't willing to take the risk to watch him work.

And yet, much of the clan has become deeply familiar with Kushiel's tailoring techniques. After all, if you even mention a type of fabric when Kushiel's around, he'll tell you not only how to best use that fabric in clothes, but also the detailed history of the material from its invention to the modern day. Same goes for anything else even tangentially related to clothing. Once you get Kushiel started on his favourite subject, it's basically impossible to get him to stop until he decides he's ready to stop. Though he doesn't seem to mind if his audience eventually starts ignoring him. Maybe he just likes the sound of his own voice, monotone as it is.

He's quite fond of the snow, and thus spends quite a lot of winter outside. A few dragons have expressed worry about finding a fae popsicle, but it turns out Kushiel's claws are more than capable of creating a fashionable outfit that can also keep him warm. Whether the outfits are practical is another matter, so he appreciates it when a concerned larger dragon carries him back to the fortress should he become immobilized by his clothing. He could just take the clothes off, but there's no way he'd abandon one of his hats. (Or anything else, for that matter.)

Kushiel held the position of leadership during the earliest parts of the clan's life, as Invernale showed no interest in running things whatsoever. Over that period he demonstrated that despite his eccentricities, he can be quite level-headed and capable when he puts his mind to it, and thus he is still well-respected and holds significant say in the clan's affairs to this day.

He's also responsible for the clan's... unique name. Supposedly it represents the "myriad and infinite possible futures of the clan." Something like that. The emblem too, which has a meaning so deep and well thought out that nobody has been able to remember what it is.

[...]

The blizzard had stopped only an hour ago, and Kushiel was already outside, supposedly to check the fortress' outskirts for damages. In reality, he was just there to enjoy the brisk evening air of the year's first snowfall, along with the feeling of a few errant flakes against his frills.

He was still going to do his job of course, but as he flew past the entrances to some of the outdoor labs it became clear there was no point. The whole place was made of stone after all, and had survived far worse weather when Aeric was in a bad mood. Instead, he leisurely began wiping snow off the sign crystal, his thick seal-fur coat keeping the cold out with ease.

The crystal was quite large compared to a fae, and he was surprised by how tired he was by the time he finished. Kushiel perched on it and took some deep breaths to regain his usual composure, the clouds of which were lit in a soft pink by the light of the crystal's emblem.

From that scenic vantage, he looked down across the rest of the island, out to the coast and bright blue ocean. It was still choppy due to the weather, but that just added pleasant background noise to the view. Kushiel let himself relax and just enjoy the evening.

His relaxation was interrupted by movement in the distance. Barely, he could make out a distant shape above the ocean. A visitor, at this hour? At least if they'd made is this far in poor weather they should be able to finish the trip. Kushiel was getting tired of having to find someone willing to fish out half-drowned dragons who'd misjudged the length of the flight.

With grace, Kushiel took to the air. Whoever this was, they'd probably appreciate a friendly face after all the poor weather. Though as he approached them, he considered turning back to grab a larger dragon and a fishing net. They were a fellow fae, dressed in purple, which was pretty solid as far as colours go. But they were flying erratically, clearly exhausted and barely managing to avoid plunging into the cold waters below.

Kushiel flew faster, waving towards the other fae and encouraging them to persevere and safely make it to land. They must have seen him, for they made the last bit of distance successfully, reaching the top of a bluff before falling out of the sky and landing in the snow with a wumph.

Shortly after the other fae completed their faceplant, Kushiel landed beside them. From this distance, it was clear to his experienced tailor's eye that not only was the fae's wizard outfit cheaply made and too thin to effectively keep the cold out, but it was at least a hundred years out of style as well.

Carefully, Kushiel knocked the snow off his feathered hat, and then shook the few clumps stuck to his coat off as well. Once he deemed himself to be presentable, he knelt down to pull the other fae out of the icy hole they were slowly sinking into.

"Don't worry, you made it here safely," Kushiel said. "Let's get you back into the air and then off to somewhere warm."

Shakily, the other fae got to his feet, and whether that was due to exhaustion or the cold Kushiel was unsure. In any case, his frills would surely have displayed gratitude had they not been iced over. Kushiel offered a handshake, which the other fae's frozen arm stiffly accepted.

"T-thank you," the other fae said, his constant shivering adding actual depth to his naturally monotone voice. "I'm S-silas, by the way. Again, thank you so m-much for your help."

"Kushiel. It's a pleasure to meet you, Silas. Now hold still for a second..."

Kushiel waved his claws around a bit, and cast a deicing spell. Technically it wasn't a heating spell, but it was probably safe for use on dragons. Silas's frills immediately contorted into a truly uncomfortable expression, but that was an improvement over their previous state of being frozen solid.

"Thank you?", Silas said.

"Don't mention it," Kushiel replied. "Now, why don't we take a flight back to the warmth of my clan's lair, and you can tell me all about your flight here along the way."
