Biography

Ustasi
Font of Magic
Chaotic Good

PkKAmaj.png
Archivist's Notes: Ustasi is a spiral who subjected to a highly dangerous transformation ritual at a young age. Taken from her home, she was to become something greater, or to die in the process. She was brought to a secluded spot in the Starwood Strand, where a circle of cultists worked their magic. Overloaded with sheer arcane power, Ustasi promptly did the the reasonable thing and passed out. Having fallen into a catatonic state, she was dismissed as a failure by the cultists and left for dead on the forest floor.

But she eventually woke up.

Around her the very landscape had changed; it was drab and lifeless. The leaves had fallen off the trees, and their dried husks littered the ground. Bewildered, Ustasi crawled towards the nearest tree and poked at it with a claw, the trunk caving in at her touch with a resounding crack. She dove out of the way as the tree broke to pieces, branches falling everywhere as the tree collapsed upon itself.

Ustasi shook the wood chips off of herself, and stared at the tree's wreckage with shock.

D-did I do this?

Afraid, but determined to learn the truth, Ustasi took to the air. Still a bit disoriented, her six wings barely able to keep herself flying steady, she began to survey the area. Within a minute, she'd seen enough. All around, this small section of the forest had been drained of all life; every last thing within a few imperial's lengths of where she had awoken felt empty.

It was them who did this, right? Not me?

Outside this small area, it was as if nothing had happened. The strand's leaves glowed blue with residual magic, and iridescent beetles crawled along an exposed branch as if nothing had happened. And yet there was a clear line where the vibrant grass gave way to the blackened death surrounding the spiral.

[...]

While the transformation did not boost the power of her magic, it did turn her into a magic source, enabling her to cast spells near-indefinitely without becoming tired. As well, the sheer volume of arcane power she produces is enough to recharge the enchantments on any nearby items.

Being a living source of magic (Well, more than the average dragon anyways.), Ustasi often finds other clan members drawing off her magic to power some of their spells. She's more than happy to offer her aid, but it'd be nice if they remembered to ask permission first.

One thing becoming a font of magic didn't change is that, as spirals do, she tends to act quickly and then fall asleep in the middle of things. What it did change is that she now floats while she's sleeping, completely ignoring gravity. Ustasi doesn't ignore momentum though, and thus continues floating in the direction she was going, gently bouncing off any walls (or dragons) she meets. Unless she was flying fast; then she painfully smashes into them and wakes up. And then crashes into the ground, as being awake turns her instinctual anti-grav off.

To her annoyance, she's often harassed by wild faeries attracted to the magic she emits. They chatter incessantly, to the point where even a spiral like Ustasi can't stand listening to them. Threats of imminent destruction and/or consumption don't appear to be enough to drive them away. (No, they're not useful for anything. Stop trying to convince her otherwise.)

She's also harassed by Faeryn, for something to do with his Inquisitorial ways. The imperial doesn't like whatever ritual turned her into a font of power, and keeps trying to come up with some excuse to get rid of her. But there's no wind under his wings there; Ustasi's broken into his den to read all his Inquisition books before, and while performing a ritual like what was done to her is forbidden, being the result of such a ritual isn't. So for the most part all they do is make faces at each other whenever their paths cross.

Ustasi takes great joy in the fact that her colours can easily blend into the walls of the fortress. Nobody else does. She's theorized that with enough work, she might be able to actually slip inside the walls, but isn't too eager to try. Apparently, the life of a highly detailed wall carving doesn't appeal to her.

At the same time, she works quite in depth with the fortress walls. And by extension, the rest of the island. It's Ustasi's job to keep the island's pink chalcedony stable, by constantly reinforcing wards across the island. If those wards break, the chalcedony will once again radiate uncontrolled arcane magic, causing all of the clan's non-arcane residents to become deathly ill. Also, it would mean the entire island might explode if even a small bit of it is struck with enough force. That might be a slightly greater worry.

Still, that's not to say that Ustasi doesn't get to have some fun with the island's innate magic. At night, the whole island lights up, looking like a field of stars upon the water to anyone flying overhead. The tip of the sheltering chalcedony peak lights up the brightest, becoming a guiding beacon for any ships travelling at night. The smaller lights instead guide the island's residents, illuminating gathering places, throughways, and whatever other sections of the crystal needed to vent some excess magic. Ustasi enjoys this use of her magic, and often puts in the extra effort to simulate planets and stars that are currently below the horizon. She's not always accurate though — sometimes instead of constellations the island's stars spell out teasing messages to dragons who've annoyed her.

Strangely, she's one of the few who can tolerate Minya's presence for any period of time. If anything, she thinks his antics are rather funny.

Zeeli
Innovative Ritualist
Chaotic Neutral

PkKAmaj.png
Beastclans seeking to become mages have a difficult path ahead of them. Unfortunately, their bodies were not shaped by literal deities for the purpose of manipulating magic, so outside of rare occasions magic use requires a bit more than mere natural talent. Most seek out implements for channelling power. Wands, staves, and crystals, often created by dragonkind for the use of beastclans. Miths often take those devices and combine them with armour of their own make to surround themselves in magic. But Zeeli wanted more than that. She wanted to feel the magic course through her exoskeleton. Smell it ionize off her fuzz. Taste it in her breath.

So she turned to the other pinnacle of mith society outside of engineering — gardening. Flower rituals are a known method of accessing the magic of the land, so all she had to do was find ways to access that power more directly. And so a grand campaign of horticulture was launched! She grew every magical flower she could find seeds for. Spent long nights performing rituals on the plants under the moonlight. Then mashed up those petals and drank the resulting extracts just to see what would happen. Zeeli even took a short stint into beekeeping to try to make magical honey. (The honey turned out pretty well, but the magical bees she inadvertently created were a bit more than she could handle.)

And while she made herself severely ill on numerous occasions, eventually enough of the magic stabilized within her that she was, without a doubt, a true sorcerer. The ever-burning flames on some parts of her body are an indisputable sign of that. She doesn't quite know if that's because she's fire-immune or all the pain receptors on those bits of her body have simply been destroyed, but the specifics don't really matter. What does matter is that she can throw fireballs at people now and she couldn't before.

Not that throwing fireballs is often her goal. Turns out, granting yourself innate magical abilities doesn't come with the instinctive knowledge on how to use them that dragons get. Or a lifetime of experience with such powers. So outside of a few well-practised spells, Zeeli doesn't know what to expect when she draws upon elemental fire. Usually it's explosions. But occasionally it's a little bug friend made of fire, and infuriatingly Zeeli has yet to figure out how to reliably summon him.

Ustasi has been Zeeli's tutor in the ways of magic. The spiral's existence as a font of power means that she can grant Zeeli more magic if she risks burnout trying to cast an unknown spell. Also her crystalline body is fireproof, but for various reasons so is much of Clan _______. But more importantly, Ustasi's greater connection to magic than the average dragon means that she can actually see how Zeeli manipulates magic as opposed to just guessing. It's very interesting. Ustasi has no idea what to do with this information, but it's very interesting. Recommend more mith drink concentrated magical flower extracts, she guesses?
