Story written by thefaceradar

When Massak was a young hatchling he lived in the palace with his parents. He was to inherit the role of prince as soon as he was at his one month marker, where he would attend a ceremony and inherit his rightful title. With his title as prince came power, not only over people, but a physical power that would enhance his magic. He would be the ice prince, a great and powerful ruler who could do what he wished when he wished to do it. Every day his teacher would come to Massaks room at mid-afternoon and teach him about the world and the people who he would rule as prince. The dragon also taught him magic, he was always unsettled at how fast Massak could learn, he was already doing intermediate magic and he was not yet fully grown.

One day Massak had decided to experiment with his magic. A small bird nest sat on his window, the little babies crying for food and attention from hunting parents. What they were unaware of was that their mother was dead, Massak had watched as she was snatched from the sky by a falcon and carried off. That left the dad to hunt for his children, leaving them alone, unguarded. Massak carefully wrapped his hands around one of the squealing babies, covering it with two hands and lightly pressing to stop the birds squawking. He placed the baby bird on his bedside table, it did not move. Carefully he fingered her neck, her pulse was weak from the suffocation within his hands. As long as she was still alive it would work. Massak summoned his powers and traced one cold fingertip on her neck, dragging it down and back up again, until her back was coated with frost. He then forced the frost to spread, curling around her body. His eyes glowed with his power as he made the frost coat her small body again and again until she was a creature of ice, as large as a falcon, with folded wings tucked close to her. Massak forced the icy creature to move, making the creature shiver with the effort. Massak told it to take flight, controlling its every move. The creature flew out the window, it's icy wings gleaming in the sun. It turned back to face Massak, already knowing what he wanted it to do before he issued a command. A knock came from the door, his magic teacher coming in directly after without waiting for a response. Massaks concentration was broken, the ice bird melted before his teachers eyes and the little bird that was inside plummeted towards the ground. Massaks teacher quickly hurtled through the window, shape shifting into a small yet fast hummingbird and back again into a dragon to catch the baby softly and return it to its nest. His teacher returned through the window and gave Massak a withering glare. "Your father warned you about trying that again young master, and yet again you didn't listen." His teacher walked back towards the door, ready to go tell Massaks father, the king, about his misbehavior. Massak calmly and quickly approached him from behind, grabbing his teachers wrist. Ice encircled it quickly. His teacher turned around, wincing at the sudden cold on his arm. "You will not tell my father about this." Massak commanded, forcing the ice further up his arm. His teacher opened his mouth to speak and then changed his mind. His face hardened. "You wouldn't have been a good prince anyway." snarled his teacher, shape shifting back into his hummingbird form and flying away. It was not the first time Massak had abused his powers, he had also forced people to do what he wanted and he had frozen a dragon before. His father would surely not be pleased.

Everybody in the town searched his face for an explanation to the shackles around his arms. Nobody dared ask though, whenever a dragon thought to ask about the shackles Massak would glare at them icily and they would retreat. It was none of their business. His life would be considered shameful anyway, there was no point to tell anybody unless he felt like being judged for his one day visit in the town. This sad town would only be a temporary stop on the way to the forest anyway, it had no value to him. Massak turned the street corner and entered the towns inn on the next street. Multiple conversations from drunken dragons surrounded him. The first level of the tavern was a bar and grill, more bar, less grill. A large drunken dragon rambled over to him. "Is youu the onee oo's bin mak'n tr'ble n' town?" His words slurred together awkwardly. "You've got the wrong man Sol, just go back and sit down." A shadowy dragon interferes. He leads the drunk man, Sol, back to his seat where he immediately joins a conversation with the other drunk people. The shadowy dragon returns, holding out a taloned hand. "I'm Kaji, welcome to the grease pit." The dragon gestures to a badly written sign reading "The grease pit" above the bar. Massak took Kajis hand and then asked loudly "Is this the only place to stay for the night in this town?" Kaji looked into Massaks eyes, apparently trying to see if he was serious. "I'm afraid so stranger, unless you want to stay in the alley, some of our guests choose it because its quieter." Kaji said, pointing just outside a window where some dragons slept with burlap bags as pillows. Massak believed Kaji was serious, he looked unsteadily into Kajis eyes, trying to tell if it was a joke. Kajis eyes twinkled mischievously. His deep laugh echoed off the walls. "I'm kidding, here, I’ll show you to your room." Kaji pulled a set of keys from a drawer behind the bar counter and led Massak up three pairs of spiraling stairs. Kaji left him the keys in front of the door farthest down the hallway. "It will be quieter than the rest of the rooms on this floor." Massak thanked him quietly. Kaji left down the hall turning at the end and yelling "Oh yeah, and stranger, if you need any help ask me." He then winked and left down the stairs.

Massak was back on the trail, he was well rested from the night before. Kajis face still lingered in his mind, his twinkling eyes as he had left the hall. Massak shook off his thoughts as he approached a split in the path. His father had told him how to get to the center of the forest once, right before he was banished. Once he no longer cared only for himself he would be able to prove himself to the fox spirit in the forest, a spirit who would deem him worthy or unworthy to return to his clan. A rustling came from the bush next to him, Massak turned around and searched the area. He spread out his wings and then pointed his one filed claw at the bush to where the rustling had come from. Ice gathered around its tip, ready to launch just as the dragon, Kaji walked out. Kajis hands rose high above his head. "Sorry, i didn't mean to cause any trouble, i was just..." Massak cut in "stalking me?" Kajis eyes twinkled as he gave Massik a toothy grin. The ice on Massaks claw had vanished, leaving no trace of his powers for Kaji to find. "More or less, but how could i not? you were such an interesting character in the grease pit last night, I made it my duty to find out why." Kaji smiled. Massak turned around and kept walking down the forest trail, calling over his shoulder "Just go back Kaji, go back while your ahead." Massak could hear the scuffing of Kajis claws on the cold dirt as he turned and left.

Massak had finally made it, the small statue of the fox on the pedestal was his one ticket back to his clan. Massak stroked the head of the small statue, his entire future would rely on the small creature once it was awoken, he would need to lie and force the creature to say he could return to the clan. Massak conjured an ice spell to freeze the ground under the statue. Massak would need three things to awake the fox, an object from his possession, something of the forest and an object forged by magic. Massak began with the possession, he removed the sash from his waist and placed it on the ground. He felt light without it, too light and vulnerable. Massak then broke a fresh branch of a sapling nearby. Finally, he awakened the magic within him and let it go free between his hands, the ice swirling and twisting to form a small icy pendant. On the centerpiece, a circle of ice framed by two small icicles, was a carving of the icefields. Massak laid everything down in a circle around the statue and perfected a drawn line through the snow that made a circle between the offerings. When he was finally done he cut his hand and let one bead of blood roll down onto the statues head. It reached the eye of the fox, disappearing into the pupil which began to swirl with darkness. Massak took a step back. The fox statue shivered, the stone melted into a deep red coat, full and shiny like a real fox. Colors began to deepen. The fox shook small flakes of stone of its fur, stretching its long taut legs out of the pedestal. It opened its mouth and bean to speak "I am Darowyn, the fox spirit. I assume you seek me for worthiness, do you not?" Massak nodded, still keeping his distance from the odd creature. "Then come closer, unless you wish for me to leave." the silky smooth voice of the fox drifted to Massak. He approached the circle of snow, stopping at the barrier between the offerings, him, and the spirit. "Tell me why you think you are ready to return to your clan young dragon, and don't ask how I know why you are here, your shackles have told me." the fox asked. "I have changed my ways, I am different." Massak said the whole sentence smoothly, a practiced line. The fox came close to him, staring him right in the eyes, searching for any hesitation. "It's a shame I don't believe that any more than you do." The fox muttered, returning to sit on the pedestal. Massak clenched his fists, he tried to think of something to say, anything to keep the fox from leaving him. "Don't leave." Massak whispered. "Don't you dare leave!" Massak shouted, launching a furious blast ice at the spirit. The fox had already begun to turn into stone, but the snow hit it before it was done. Massaks shackles glowed and pain arced up his arms, he couldn't move them any further apart. The fox spirit writhed in anger, it's body grew and it's eyes became voids of deep red hatred. Massak backed away. "How dare you!" The fox yelled. The fox spirit launched itself at Massak, who ran for the circle and dove, breaking the circle drawn in the snow just as the spirits long unnatural claws grasped his ankle. It was gone immediately, all that was left was the statue with glowing eyes and an angry face baring teeth. Massak sat up, brushing the snow from his head. It hadn't worked. The shackles felt heavier around his arms, there was no going back.

After Massak had returned to the town to rest for the night again he and Kaji became friends, and eventually fell in love. Massak stayed in the small village on the border of the shadowclan with Kaji, temporarily happy to be rid of all his doubts about the ice clan, his clan. Eventually Massak shared his story with Kaji, the only one he trusted, starting at the very beginning. "My mother and father taught me well in the castle, i was to be their little prodigy prince. That was before i began to toy with the darker side of magic and got these." Massak held up his shackles. "There was one final time i tried dark magic that caused my banishment, it was the time I was on thin ground from forcing a baby bird into my own creature, so when i almost took my mother’s life my father banished me." Massak took a deep breath continuing "I went wild, primitive, savage. I caused ice storms that took young hatchlings lives and freezing frost that sickened many people. My final blow was to the nest my father and mother were going to hatch, I forced a freezing rain down on it, and thunderous lightning that cracked all three eggs." Kaji looked up into Massaks eyes, he wanted more of an explanation. "Don't worry Kanji, I replaced them all before they noticed with my final experiment. In fact, they are supposed to hatch tomorrow, maybe we can go watch from the border and see what happens." Massak smiled and looked down at Kaji who had fallen asleep. "Tomorrow, tomorrow I will go home…
