Biography

ᛟᛚᚠᚢᛊᛊ
The Convivial

Qlfuss resides at the Blossom and Birch: an inn built on the borders of the Starwood Strand that welcomes weary travellers with drinks brewed on the premises, home-made meals and comfortable lodging. Due to the nature of Arcane's woodland, with its ever-changing paths and hypnotic mirage-lights, the rooms are only lightly used, but the pub itself has over time become a popular place for the adult dragons among the Lundlaevungar to wind down at the end of the day. This is thanks in no small part to its friendly and personable barkeep.

When he is not behind the bar, Qlfuss can be found in the basement, where he brews, ferments and distills much of the alcohol that is served at the Blossom and Birch. His skill now is a result of much trial and error - often resulting in undrinkable moonshine - but his beverages have become much more palatable over time. He is particularly famed for his mead, which he brews using honey from a hive of Coral Carpenters that harvest nectar exclusively from Starwood blooms. Some say that the drink still has some of the flowers' glow.

Qlfuss himself appears to be in a state of perpetual tipsiness, with a slight stagger to his steps and a slur in his speech. He always seems to have the cheery disposition that comes with having a few good drinks, too.

He lets everyone assume that he has been sampling his own wares, and keeps the more sinister truth for only his closest friends.

The real reason for his drunken appearance is a rare, mutated strain of Gembond, which he picked up on the borders between the Starfall Isles and the Wandering Contagion, his original home. In addition to the crystals growing as shards from his head and back and in feather-like structures on the underside of his wings, his brain was also affected, causing his difficulties with balance, speech and dexterity. His body was eventually able to fight off the acute disease, but when Qlfuss recovered it became clear that the effects were permanent.

However, the weight of the crystals and his wobbly gait don't bother him at all. If anything, he is proud to have survived. He doesn't keep it secret out of shame, but rather to ensure his patrons neither feel sorry for him nor fear an illness that is no longer contagious.

It also benefits him when strangers assume he is a drunkard, because Qlfuss's real vice is cards. He is no longer very good at shuffling, but that doesn't stop him from enjoying all kinds of games over a drink or two - and better yet if his opponent underestimates him. Morcant will no longer play against him for real stakes, but despite that he is still Qlfuss's favourite competitor.

When Morcant is home, the two share a set of rooms above the inn and spend most evenings in the pub: Morcant seated at the bar, flirting aimlessly with anyone who approaches it, and Qlfuss behind it, chatting to his best friend in between serving customers. The two clearly share a very close bond, though the exact nature of it completely confounds most who see them together, and neither of them are keen on attaching a specific label.

Qlfuss is also friendly with Orion, the proprieter of The Grotto, a night-cafe in the Terraces. They occasionally meet and gossip together over drinks in one or other of their establishments.

Mead, Wine and Perry are a trio of Banescale miniatures, once no more than decoration on goblets but now enchanted to come alive. They help ("help") Qlfuss to brew alcohol and serve drinks.
