Biography

The Hungry

The shackles are, unfortunately, a requirement.

It was not always thus. As a hatchling, Fenrir appeared almost as any other Tundra. It seemed that the only quirk wrought upon him by the intense Arcane energies of the Starfall Isles was a second tail, which, when compared to his more drastically affected siblings, seemed so minor a change as to be a blessing.

Yet as he grew he began to change.

His muzzle lengthened, as did his teeth. His fur grew thick and untamed, no matter the season. His eyes shifted from pink towards red. His wings, once a vibrant green like his mother's, dulled and turned black, until he resembled nothing more than a gigantic, winged and double-tailed wolf.

More frightening were the changes to his appetite and personality. As the moon waxed towards full, he began to experience an intense hunger and the desire to hunt. It faded as the moon waned, only to return again the following month. For a long while, Fenrir suppressed these urges - but there are some cravings which must be satisfied.

One night, when the moon hung full overhead, the lunar madness took Fenrir in its grip. He loped out into the Starwood Strand with a craving for blood.

He returned the following morning, his maw bloody and his belly full, but with no memory of the previous evening. So it has been every full moon since: once a month, in sync with the phases of the moon, Fenrir loses his mind and is drawn to hunt Arcane's woodland with bloodthirsty fervour.

Nothing has yet been able to curb this insatiable prey drive.

Though Fenrir has not yet taken a draconic or beastclan life, it can only be a matter of time. His sister Hela has in fact foreseen it: Fenrir's teeth are destined to spill Odin’s life-blood. He is aware of her premonition, and therefore submits himself willingly (if not happily) to whatever is required to ensure the safety of both clan members and visitors to the region during his lunar transformations. He does not, after all, wish to do any harm.

After learning of Odin's fate, Loki engaged the services of Skadi: a huntress whose family and clan have long been guardians of the dread creatures imprisoned within the Fortress of Ends. It was she who brought Fenrir's ice-bound shackles and chains, and she who insists that he must wear them at all times, even when he appears sane. Each month, she uses them to bind him and prevent his rampage through the Star Wood.

Despite Skadi's best sfforts, Fenrir sometimes breaks his bonds. His howling calls the Clan's lupine and canine familiars to join his monstrous wolf-pack, and together they run wild in the Starwood Strand. On these occasions, Skadi is obliged to hunt him down and subdue him - by any means necessary.

Fenrir hates her. It is not because of her work: he fully understands the necessity of the frozen shackles, though they burn with cold, and even her use of force, though she has more than once bloodied him during his ravenous attemtps to escape. Rather, it is the way Skadi looks at him with distrustful contempt even during the new moon, when he is completely himself: she sees him only as a monster.

When he is in control of his own mind, Fenrir has no desire to wake up with the taste of blood on his lips. He wishes nothing more than to find a cure for his lunar madness. He searches for one still ...
