Njorð does not come out of the water. He hatched beneath the waves, in the abyssal trenches of the Tidecaller’s domain, and prefers the depths to the shallows even now. He joined the Lundlaevungar early, when Loki and Angrboda still made their home in the Crystalspine Reaches. This was before the Clan broke their Spire from its grounding pedestal: his first home was at its roots, in a cave whose mouth lay beneath the waves that wore the Spire’s plinth to precarious delicacy. He found the prospect of moving to the Starwood Strand difficult, not least because he knew that if the Clan became land-locked, he would be forced out of his element; so Njorð rejoiced when the Spire crashed atop the cliffs and the Clan was forced to remain there, by the sea. Njorð found a new home for himself in the cliff wall beneath the tide-line, and cultivated a garden of seaweed fronds and sea-anemones that shelter the entrance to his cave from prying eyes. Inside, he carved the cavern deeper with the help of his fellow sea-dweller Jormungadr and carefully polished the walls to the smoothness of pearls. It now connects via a sandy sloping passage to the lower halls of the Cliff Tunnels. The water is warm, lit by the gentle light of Glow Stars, and his quarters are filled with trinkets: sea-glass and shells, drapes of depin hide and seal mane. Though Njorð is welcome to join the Clan’s activities, his reluctance to leave the water means that he seldom does so. Nonetheless, he cares for his adopted Clan: he regularly patrols the marine borders and controls the sea-currents in the Lundlaevungar territory, making him an asset to their defences. Since the Spire took up its new position, hanging in the sky between the Starwood Strand and the Focal Point, Njorð has taken to floating beneath its pointed base, his wings spread out across the surface of the waves. Sometimes he is joined by Jormungandr, when the Spiral is in a calm enough mood, though more often he finds himself alone. Njorð doesn’t mind: he likes the quiet, and his own company; the soft lap of the waves; the distant boom of the tide along two shorelines; the call of the seabirds and, somewhere in the depths, the song of something even larger than himself, reverberating through the blue-green waters and into his submerged ears. It is in these moments that he most often meets with Loki, who perches on his back while they discuss the seaward margins of the territory and ideas one or other of them has had to bolster the Clan’s aquatic security. Occasionally Thor joins them, though he finds it difficult and less than agreeable to settle on Njorð’s back, and is even more reluctant to slip into the water. |

He joined the Clan around the same time as Nerþus, and immediately felt a deep connection to her. He does not claim any of the foresight that some in his Flight profess, and yet he suspects that his awareness of the bond between them is a result of his Water origins. However, when he tried to befriend Nerþus his efforts were rebuffed – or so it seemed, for Nerþus was so painfully shy at the time that the attentions of a handsome young Ridgeback discomfited her to self-conscious silence. Therefore Njorð withdrew, disappointed but not wishing to make her uncomfortable and ruin whatever fate was intended for the two of them. He admired her from afar as they both grew older. Eventually, Nerþus began to talk to him, though to Njorð it always seemed that she was aloof and distant. He longed to tell her of his premonition of their joined fate, but wanted to wait until they were at least friends. Njorð still carries a torch for Nerþus, and hopes that one day he will be able to confess his feelings towards the Pearlcatcher. |
