Biography

The Venomous

Nathra hatched into a Plague Clan steeped in its own traditions. She was raised by the Clan as a whole and, though she knew her parents, they were no more responsible for her than any of the other adults, and she felt no special affection for or connection to them.

The Clan made its living by trapping, taming and trading familiars in the Scarred Wasteland: a dangerous and thankless occupation that made the dragons who practiced it as hard as the life they lived. As soon as Nathra was old enough, she was put to work.
Though feeding and tending the more docile familiars was little more than drudgery, she found that she enjoyed her job. She was curious to learn how best to take care of each familiar, and how she might gain their trust. This was in contrast to the rest of the Clan, who were more interested in selling their captured familiars fast and for a profit.

Nathra's first breakthrough was with a Shattered Serpent captured from the Sandswept Delta. It arrived spitting spells and poison, and was so wild the Clan could not find a buyer. Nathra worked with the Serpent every day, gradually taming it until eventually she was able to safely open the cage and let out her new familiar. However, the Serpent still refused to trust the rest of the Clan, who had tried to break its spirit, and snapped at every potential buyer, and in the end they had to accept that it belonged to Nathra now.

The two became inseparable companions, but Nathra was warned that this could never happen again. She was a risk to the Clan's profits. She could not be allowed to build that kind of bond with every familiar that crossed her path, and it was already happening with the familiars currently in her care. She was therefore transferred away from familiar care, and was heartbroken at the loss of all her familiars apart from her faithful Shattered Serpent.

She become one of the Clan's trappers, and discovered that her Plague magic allowed her to produce a venom that would knock out most familiars cold, and even some smaller dragons. Her tutors showed her how to create traps that capitalised on this ability, but also showed her ways to lure more friendly familiars without resprting to violence and outright trickery. As she learned from observation, she became a skilled member of the group.

Nathra often travelled to markets with her Clan to sell on the familiars she tamed. One day, at a market they frequented on the border between the Scarred Wasteland and the Starfall Isles, her path crossed with that of a handsome young Spiral by the name of Jormungandr.

He spotted her Shattered Serpent familiar - similar to his own Shadow Serpent - and used this as an excuse to start a conversation. The two chattered together amiably until Nathra was inevitably called away by the Clan leaders and ordered to start packing up the crates ready for the journey back. Sadly, she bade Jormungandr farewell: she had enjoyed talking with him and been captivated by his optimism and obvious love of life. His world sounded so different to her own, and she had wanted to talk more. Although he promised to return on the next market day and find her again, she did not believe she would see him again.

However, Jormungandr proved her wrong: he made the journey to the edge of the Scarred Wasteland in time for the next market, and the next, and the next after that. He brought her small trinkets and gifts from the Crystalspine Reaches, and bought treats from the other market stalls for the two of them to eat.

Despite Nathra’s fears that her Clan would not allow it, the two grew close. She began to look forward to market days held close to the Arcanist’s lands.

Then, one evening, the Clan Elders summoned her. They informed her that if she intended to pursue a relationship, they would require a dowry. They had investigated Jormungandr and his clan, and come to the conclusion that he had no skills to offer their familiar business, therefore Nathra would have to leave, and demanded a sum of treasure to replace her. Nathra railed against the idea of essentially being sold off, but it did no good. She was told on no uncertain terms that if Jormungandr's family would not paid her dowry, she could not leave to be with the dragon she had grown to love, and she couldn't pursue the relationship further without it.

Knowing that there was no other way out, she wrote a letter explaining the situation to Jormungandr and sent it to the Starfall Isles. There was no reply.

Nathra attended the next market day with a heavy heart. She was sure that Jormungandr's family had forbidden their relationship, since her Clan would not let her go without a dowry. From what she had heard of the Lundlaevungar, she believed they would not agree with such an archaic practice, and wouldn't want her to join them.

However, the Clan had no sooner set up the stalls than there was a commotion at the front. Nathra, who had withdrawn to sit with and calm the agitated familiars, emerged to discover a small entourage had arrived, and at its front was Jormungandr, nervous but determined, standing tall beside his fae father. The Lundlaevungar delegation presented the Clan Elders with a chest containing 8,888 treasure: the exact sum they had cited as the minimum they would accept as Nathra's dowry.

Nathra had to bite back tears when Jormungandr stepped forwards and professed that eight times as much would not be a worthy price for her - though she was grateful that he had waited until Loki and the Clan Elders had shaken claws on the deal before making such a statement.

They left at once. Nathra had few possessions, and had brought everything important with her to the market, including her beloved Shattered Serpent. As they travelled back towards the Lundlaevungar's Spire, Loki and Jormungandr explained to her that she was not bound to them as she had been to her original Clan: she was free to do as she liked, including leave if she so wished. Nathra, however, had no intention of leaving Jormungandr's side and was excited to discover more about the clan she had heard so much about during their long conversations.

Jormungandr's family proved to be as friendly and welcoming as he had always promised, and she found herself quickly assimilated into the Lundlaevungar. Over time, Nathra discovered the joys (and trials) of family life and, as she shed the money-oriented mentality of her former Clan, she became a much happier dragon.

Allowed to indulge her passions and interests, she devoted herself to understanding familiars. She looks after those who come to the clan and remain unbonded with a specific dragon, and loves her job entirely. She particularly liked taking care of those which are particularly large, ferocious or unfriendly, as she enjoys the challenge of earning their trust and friendship. She also enjoys paying back the Clan that gave her a home with her skills, and often sells on the familiars the Clan cannot keep.

These days, Nathra is outgoing and always eager to have fun. Her relationship with Jormungandr has also blossomed and the two are happiest around each other: they can most often be found chasing one another through the sky around the Lair, or tying themselves in knots as they play-fight together.
