The Tiny Glimmer in the World of Darkness
Or Maybe He Is Just a Figment of Their Imagination



No one knows where the Light Thief came from. Perhaps he was one of the many hatchlings born in the cramped and filthy cells, neglected and forgotten for so long in the heavy darkness that their goop stuck them against the concrete floor where they dried. Or perhaps he even came in from the outside world, the world of sunshine and sweet breezes that tantalized them in their dreams, though the reason for that was unfathomable for the many dragons that have lived in the compound for all their lives.

But they do know when he came.

It was when he brought with him the light.

They call him the Light Thief because he steals not the light from them, but banishes the darkness with the tiny lantern on his tail.

Tirelessly. Every night without fail.

Small whispers of adoration follow him everywhere he goes. Pale emaciated faces peer out from the smothering darkness, whispering, "Light Thief, Light Thief. Don't leave us alone here.

"Light my candle please, Light Thief."

"Hide. The guard is coming."

And he will continue to do so until the day he dies, perhaps. They do not know. He never speaks a word to them.

But what all the dragons know, as they watch the gaunt and underfed shadow relight every candle the royal guard stamps out, is that he would never die.

No. The Warden would make sure that he suffers a fate worse than death.

Because he gave them hope.
