Her first companions were the silence of the Carrion Canyon and the crackle of the stagnant air. She weakly blinked her way into reality and saw, for the first time, the hostile landscape that she had been born into. Walls of pale rock and warm sand surrounded her, rising at almost a vertical angle and stretching towards the sky. There was nothing inside this dangerous cavern but the bones of those less fortunate. Skulls lingered at her feet, jaws gaping in an open invitation for her to join them. She didn’t know why she was here, but she knew she couldn’t stay.

The first hours of her existence were a grueling, painful endeavor. To fly directly upwards would be practically impossible, especially without nourishment in the grueling desert sun. It was not yet at its highest point, but it was reaching the zenith with alarming speed. Skeletons cropped up everywhere around her as a reminder of what she could become if she didn’t get out of the heat, and quickly. She searched desperately for a dent in the cliff within, a shield from the increasing heat. Finally, after hours of looking, she spotted a small hole just about a dozen feet above her head. She spread her massive wings and pumped them up and down, taking to the sky for the first time.

Reaching even as far as that nearby cave was difficult when she had to fly vertically, but in moments, she was scrambling up and inside. Immediately, she let out a sigh of relief. It was far cooler inside the cave than it had been within the canyon. On top of that, it seemed far larger than she had expected, with tunnels going three directions from the wide main entrance. Water rolled down one side of the cave into a pool at the floor. She scrambled over and knelt down to gulp down some of the precious drink and felt herself cool down a bit. This place was everything she could ask for. Once she was less dazed and in a clearer state of mind, she observed the cavern more closely and noticed that words were carved into the walls—words she recognized. Some of them seemed to be names, and others were words of different dialects. The notes all directed back to a deity—the Stormcatcher—and their dedication of work to his service. Another word caught her eye, one mentioned in passing. “Nori,” she muttered to herself, trying the taste of it on her tongue. Then again, louder, “Nori.” It meant law, gospel, and rule. Nori thought for a moment. If there was writing here, there must be other dragons, even though she was currently alone. There was a desperate need inside her for company. Her objective was clear. She was going to find others in this desolate wasteland to join her in the cave, and they would be her brothers and sisters, and she would be as her name was; law, gospel, and ruler.

And yet for weeks after she was left to work alone in the cave. The task of braving the canyon walls was still too daunting for her, especially as she survived only on the plants growing in the cracks and crevices of the cave and the occasional small animal unfortunate enough to cross her path. Even if she couldn’t travel, however, she worked. She read the scrolls and information left behind by her predecessors and built back many of the rooms into working order. Each day when she woke up, she would look into the pool at the entrance to see her own reflection, just to remind herself that she was real. Being alone for so long in such a place, sometimes she felt like some sort of apparition instead of an actual living being. The reflection was a gentle reminder that, even if she was alone, she was real.

Of course, she wasn’t alone forever. About two months into her solitary existence, she awoke to the desperate roars of another dragon. Her heart leapt into her chest and she instantly ran out to the edge of her cave. As soon as she saw him, her world stopped. Another dragon, she thought. There’s another. He even looked the same as her, a guardian, as the scrolls called them. She leapt down to face him. “You there!” Nori called. “Are you alone?” The dragon turned slowly to look at her, then nodded. Nori swallowed heavily. “Well then. So am I.” She said simply. He nodded again and walked up to her.

“Do you have a place to stay?” he asked.

“Yes, a cave. It’s much cooler than out here,” she said, gesturing up to her cavern. He followed her gaze.

“Is there enough for me to work?”

“I can assure you, there’s more than enough room for whatever you may need, though I’m not sure what kind of work you’re referring to.”

“I’m an engineer. I’d like a workshop or laboratory of some sort.”

“I can provide that,” Nori said with a smile. “My name is Nori, and I am the law. Welcome to my clan.”

“Is it a large clan?”

“No,” she said hesitantly, “not yet. You’re the first member, apart from myself.” Suddenly, her voice grew strong with conviction. “But it will be larger soon. As soon as possible.” He looked at her gravely.

“Then it is a pleasure to meet you,” he said at last. “I’m not sure how to introduce myself. I’m afraid that I’m not sure what my name is.”

“Then you’re like me. Without a family or lineage, right?” She paused. “Then we will become the family for any who joins our ranks. Your name will be Ebi, and you will be the father as I am the mother.” He watched her for a moment, then bowed low.

“As you wish, Nori.”

Through her determination and work, the clan gradually grew. The clan was her pride and her creation, and it became her life. In the end, the pool of water that was once at the entrance was the main source of water for all of her dear clanmates. There was never a moment that it was still enough to see her own reflection any more. She no longer needed a pool of water to see herself, anyways. Portraits in her likeness hung around her den and about the lair, painted by the finest artists her hoard could commission. Their blue eyes mirrored her own and whispered as she past, reminding her in feather-light tones that she was real, she existed, and this clan was her own.
