Oertzeni left the Icefield early in his life, and met Midsummer when they were both hitching a ride on a merchant wagon. They rapidly became friends during the ride; when they discovered they both had a strong sense of wanderlust, they decided to travel all over Sornieth together. After all, it's much safer to travel in a group! The two of them wander for a couple of years, and it was the happiest either of them had been. Unfortunately, while crossing the Wispwillow Grove, they accidentally ruined a witch's once-in-a-lifetime casting. Furious, the witch cursed them- not only were they doomed to be trapped in the Grove, but their bodies transformed into living lights. "All of the creatures in the Grove will know where you two are, and you'll never know peace again!" Terrified, the two of them ran to the border- and discovered they truly couldn't leave. And while it would have easier to give into despair, the two of them decided to make the best of things. Using fallen logs, leaves, and a lot of mud, they crafted a small house where they could at least hide their light for a time. Once they were done with that, they forged for supplies to build weapons. Over the next two years, the two of them honed their battle skills, and learned the Grove as well as any local. They also discovered that their lights didn't just attract predators- it attracted those who were lost as well. Oertzeni and Midsummer came to be known as the Lights of the Lost. One day, they came across a lost Arcane Spiral named Sakura. As they guided her back to the border, they talked of their lives. Somehow, Sakura managed to get the whole story from the two of them. When they finally got to the border, Sakura turned to them and promised she would bring help- after all, her clan had a large number of mages and witches. Oertzeni and Midsummer thanked her, but they doubted her word -many had promised to bring help, but none returned. This time, though, Sakura did return- along with Kammererite, Majestic, and Awela, three witches who respectively dealt with light and bogs. They were unable to transform Oertzeni and Midsummer back into their former selves, but they were able to lift the spell that prevented them from leaving. Sakura offered to take the two back to her clan to see if any of the other mages could lift the spell, and the two agreed. Over the course of the journey, the group became fast friends. While the other mages were unable to transform them back, Oertzeni and Midsummer liked the clan (for Oertzeni, he liked one member a bit more than the rest). They decided to stay, and joined Evergreen's Starwood Patrol to help anyone lost in the Strand. |
