The history of the Viridians is an unusual and tumultuous one. This island chain is, despite what others would expect of any landmass falling under the domain of the Flamecaller, very lush with plant life. Formed by an underwater volcano while the continental plates were shifting long ago, these small territories located south of the mainland have off and on been claimed by various parties.
Shortly ensuing the Third Age, when the Southern Icefield was once large enough for its residents to pose a tactical threat to the neighboring Ashfall Wastes, unchecked conflict between the two elements was constant. For some time, no civilian dared to live near the southern border in fear that the Gaolers would attack and imprison them. Military outposts dotted the perimeter, always on guard for any form of surprise invasion.
The Viridians in those days were desolate and quite possibly the worst contender for bloodshed. Fire and Ice struggled to claim as much territory as they could, each side fighting for days on end to seize the unclaimed land. Decades of war later, the warriors of the Icewarden won and officially marked the chain as belonging to Ice, but the warriors of the Flamecaller would continue to declare otherwise.
Due to conflicting elemental influences, the Viridians became a strange environment of bizarre temperature changes and cross-breeding between the two distinct types of flora and fauna that began to develop there. In technicality, both the Flamecaller and the Icewarden had regional control over where the islands fell. This line would continue to waver for centuries.
In any case, Gaolers began to migrate en masse and heavily populate the islands to establish civilizations and prisons to contain what was deemed as Shade-influenced; this also included Fire dragons, who still after the declaration of Ice ownership would continue to attack and raid the outposts. Many were captured and held there indefinitely.
Roughly a century would pass, with the Flamecaller's influence slowly stretching back across more and more of the islands. This marks the beginning of the Southern Icefield's shrinkage, combined with increasing conflicts from the Lightning region slowly pushing their forces back.
The island became hotter and hotter, and dragons born within its borders now suddenly began sporting bright orange eyes.
This included Gaolers, to their absolute horror; unable to accept why this was happening, all newborns this occurred with were separated from their mothers, causing internal conflicts that crippled their ability to cooperate with each other. Suspicions and wild conspiracies arose. While Fire-born Gaolers were not an unknown thing prior to this, this only occurred in the Fire's "section" of the island closer to the Ashfall Wastes; thus so as to prevent this from happening, larger and larger sections of the Viridians fell under restricted access, and the existence of these Fire Gaolers kept such a buried secret that not even some of the oldest wardens there knew about it.
While it had been suspected for some time that the culprit was in fact the gradual elemental reclaiming of the land, no one wanted to admit it. And now the reality of it was inescapable.
The largest island of the Viridians was constituted by a volcano; this was believed to be dormant at the time, but one day while this turmoil was escalating unexpectedly erupted. The wardens were too distracted by the chaos of their situation to listen to the warnings of their prisoners. The lava flow wiped out their sources of food, heated the islands significantly, and destroyed many crucial buildings there. The prisons were underground located on a different island and henceforth largely unaffected.
The eruption signaled the beginning of the end. As the Viridians became increasingly unsuitable and costly for the Gaolers to live within, all Ice forces abruptly withdrew and abandoned the islands entirely to return to the Southern Icefield, where their numbers were needed to defend against a rising number of attacks close to their motherland.

The prisoners were left behind.
Trapped underground, they quickly realized that the outposts had been deserted. Some of them had been let out of their cells at that time for testing and were thus never escorted back to containment; these dragons helped break the others out, and in a matter of hours managed to return to the surface.
Many of these dragons had not seen the light of day in years, nor had they been given proper meals nor room to stretch their limbs. Muscular atrophy, fatigue, and disease ran rampant, the latter being the reason for many of the newborns dying. While there were dragons there of many opposing elements, particularly fire and ice, they knew that if they didn't cooperate, they would all surely die. There were no communication lines, no ships on their way to help them. They were completely isolated from the rest of the world, with only each other to rely upon for survival. They used what was left behind of the outposts to rebuild a new society.
Ultimately only a small number of the prisoners would survive, lending them long-term isolation and small coverage in their part of the islands, but their legacy would continue and thrive, most notably a new sub-division of Gaolers becoming increasingly attuned to the Fire element with each successive generation.

In an ironic turn of events, when the forces of Fire would return to the islands to learn it was unclaimed once more, the discovery of the now self-dubbed Howlers would send shockwaves throughout the populous.
Howlers, though small in number as were the other dragons descended from the original prisoners, were uniquely adapted to the increasingly lush ecosystem that was developing from the ashes of the volcano's eruption. They readily embraced the significance of the sea, the forests, and the flames of their heritage. Many sported bright colors as a result of gradual adaptation to their new surroundings. And, of course, their most notable characteristic was their incredible speaking volume and bite force.
The forgesmiths of the elite class desired to use the island's volcano for mining ores, but this required encroaching on the lands of these inhabitants. They were offered jobs and training to mine these metals but were denied the fruits of their labor. This quickly became a source of friction, and they demanded equal treatment. Their demands went ignored. Conflict ensued. The existence of these islander dragons was kept a tight-lidded secret to the rest of the flight for decades.

In recent times, the truth about the Viridians has increasingly become more and more common knowledge as secrets are spilled from the inside out. More and more dragons have arrived of their own volition to help fend off the greedy elites and provide economic and social support for the inhabitants.
Amidst the chaos has arisen one particular Howler named Jawbreaker, determined to defend his home and the honor of his ancestors.
The towering dragon is strongly attuned to the Fire element thanks to years of self-training and the recent boon of elemental energy across the world. He wears a massive spiked collar and chains as part of a long-running cultural repurposing of old gaoler guard wear. He is particularly massive compared to his kin and is well known for his proficiency in Coatl tongue and combat of various kinds.
He utilizes a mixture of physical and elemental attacks to keep opponents at a distance before abruptly closing in to rain hell down with flame-sheathed claws. He uses his size to his advantage and is not afraid to throw his weight around; a body slam from him is enough to disorient an Imperial twice his size, even if just for a brief window, if timed and placed correctly. He constantly keeps the pressure up by surrounding the area with smoke and fire (if possible without harming the environment significantly), although this is not so much to camoflauge himself (as he's quite bright colored and hard to miss) but to get in the eyes and lungs of the opponent. Smoke often induces tears and coughing in excess, and in such case will also reduce visibility for the terrain.
He is thick-skinned both literally and emotionally. He has a single-minded diligence on whatever task he sets himself to and does not speak more than he has to. He strikes a middle ground between introverted and extroverted, splitting his time evenly between others and himself, and is highly resourceful - he has experience with creating things out of wood, clay, stone, scrap materials, and even some kinds of metals, although he's less of a forger and more a welder.
He shares many characteristics with Eranth, whom he is in close contact with.
