CHARACTERISTICS Watermoatls are a bright and cheery bunch, always willing to lend a hand or be a friend. They’re usually excellent babysitters and egg-watchers. Arcane-eyed Watermoatls tend towards curiosity, and though they enjoy exploring Sornieth, they will often make a pilgrimage to their home patch to hear the story of their creation. Nature-eyed Watermoatls are more likely to be nurturing and caring, preferring to rarely leave home and care for future generations directly. Once and awhile though, a watermoatl is born who is spit from their homeland like an errant seed. These watermoatls are always surprising.

LORE We all know that no fruits in all of Sornieth are as delicious as those grown in Nature’s own Viridian Labyrinth. Of course, that doesn’t stop some from trying. A group of Arcane farmers, longing for delicious fruits during the long winter, decided to take matters into their own hands and breed a perfect variety of home-grown watermelon. The farmers tried every experiment they could think of, but were always left with tasteless - though sometimes glowing - watermelons. They mixed the watermelon seeds with glitter, dipped them in the waters of the Bay, and might have exploded a couple just for fun. They consulted with seers and scientists and scholars and eccentrics in their quest for the perfect summer fruit, but always the flavor eluded them. “What could we be doing wrong?” asked one small Fae after yet another day eating mealy, tasteless melon. “We’ve zapped them and boomed them, sparkled them and floated them. [/nextcol]Covered them in stardust, and made sure they were completely dust free! We’ve planted them in Crystalspine and the Strand, and we’ve even tried to plant them in the magics surrounding Dad’s Observatory. And now here we are all the way up here on the Focal Point and still we’re going to have to go a whole season without good fruit!” One of the farmers, a Spiral, paused from precariously tilting a watermelon over the edge of the Focal Point and gasped, “Planted! THAT’S IT!” He jerked up into the air and zig-zagged through the air excitedly, his watermelon going over the side. “We know our seeds are filled with magic, we know they should work, but what if it’s too much? Our ground is saturated in it. Let’s take our seeds to Nature!” And so our cohort of scientist-farmer fruit enthusiasts packed up their magic-imbued seeds and flew to the Viridian Labyrinth, leaving one unlucky Guardian down below to scrape watermelon off his scales. |
Meanwhile... “No, no, no! This isn’t right at all!” grumbled the Coatl, her brow furrowed and her claws tapping impatiently on the ground of the Everbloom Gardens. “Look at all these watermelons. Look at them! Tell me what’s wrong with them!” Her fellow critics stared at the perfectly good watermelon patch in front of them, puzzled. What was the big deal? They were all watermelons. “Um, they’re all different sizes?” suggested the rather small Guardian. The Okapi Nocturne said, “That one’s got no stripes.” “The corners aren’t sharp enough on the square one,” tried the Crystal and Facet Skydancer. “No! Wrong!” cried the Coatl, probably shoving a bunch of things off a table dramatically in her anger. “These watermelons have no soul! They’re so… plain! They’re so boring! They’re just watermelons. The people of Sornieth love our watermelons, and they expect greater things from us every year!” “But what can we do?” asked the Nocturne. “We’ve already done everything worth doing to a watermelon. We’ve got square ones, gold ones, seedless ones, even ones shaped like hearts! Tell me those ones don’t have souls!” “Well no, of course they don’t! It’s not like they’re getting up on the table and tap dancing!” “But what can we do? It’s not like watermelon souls just fall out of the sky!” Then, suddenly, a cohort of arcane dragons fell out of the sky and crashed into the watermelon judging party.
