Biography
“You know, Panellus stipticus is a rather interesting specimen of sorts, as it’s bioluminescent. Look, there’s a fine sample right there on that branch overhead. Erm, Nyrethi? Nyrethi, I’m trying to show you something! For goodness sake, I’m your science tutor, not a babysitter; just get your tail over—Nyrethi!” The older Wildclaw male grunted impatiently, pushing up his copper glasses and absentmindedly stroking the tickbird on his head. “We don’t have time for your lollygagging, we’ve got science to do!” The student in question was staring at a very fat Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis, and the frog was vocalizing quite loudly to the amusement of its audience. Nyrethi pointed eagerly at the chubby amphibian, waving his short arms wildly. Nature was hilarious in ways that kept Nyrethi occupied for hours at a time. Morgoth sighed, rolling his light green orbs, and readjusted his green cobwebs. Of course, his Needletooth rolled its light green orbs and readjusted its nonexistent cobwebs. Slightly distracted, the Wildclaw laughed at his little copy, and then turned to his student. “Honestly, Nyrethi, we’ve seen this specimen before. Just come and take a look at this fungus! It’s glowing wonderfully green, and this one’s hairs are quite evident! The wooly feeling on this one is incredible! Touch it, Nyrethi, and let’s take a sample as well! Oh, Nyrethi!” The swampy instructor hissed in annoyance, gently tapping the butterfly wings of his protégé. “It’s time to go now, I suppose, as you’re not focusing very well. Take a break back at the lair, get some chow.” Suddenly the young Wildclaw shook his head. No, he signed to Morgoth, just look at this one closely. Sighing again, the herbalist bent down to closely inspect the frog that had so captured Nyrethi’s attention. What a waste of my time, Morgoth initially thought. Just another purple frog, with that weird little snout of its. Yet as Nyrethi continued to jab his claw towards a certain leg of the animal, the tutor picked up the frog and stared closely at the limb. Why, look at that! A blue band, Morgoth mused. What does that mean? Is it a familiar? No, nobody has a purple frog for a pet in our clan. “Nyrethi, what do you think?” the Wildclaw asked, certainly curious about this animal. I think it might be a lost adventurer! It certainly looks like one, Nyrethi motioned. He smiled eagerly, his vibrant green eyes going misty as once again, he entered a daydream. As Morgoth pondered the appearance of Nyrethi’s new friend, the young adventurer danced around the forest clearing, his leafy boughs shaking loudly. Wow, I never knew frogs could do that! he wondered, as flights of purple frogs did acrobatics across the treetops. Cool! Wonder what would happen if I climbed up there with them . . . And so he did, clambering clumsily up the trunk of a rotting tree and joining the imaginary frog gymnasts. His melted mouth smiled, no matter how painful, as yet another daydream cheered up the sad little dragon’s life. Meanwhile, his lazy aardvark sniffed around the forest floor, hunting down insects. Morgoth was still investigating the agitated amphibian’s legs, prodding in the most uncomfortable places. Finally the frog gave up and sprung out of a very alarmed dragon’s grasp, hopping away slowly. Morgoth looked around—not again! He raced towards the weakening tree that held his heavy student, but tripped over the aardvark in his haste. “Watch out, Nyrethi!” he shouted quickly, as the crumbling tree began to fall. Nyrethi, in all his fairy tale glory, danced to the edge of the straining branches and tipped over, falling, falling, falling. Morgoth scrambled to his claws and raced to catch the young Wildclaw, only to watch in confusion as a series of leaves gracefully lowered Nyrethi to the ground. Hi, Morgoth. Did you figure out what was with that frog? Of course, the student had no idea what had just happened, snapping out of his delusion and finding himself on the ground again. Morgoth smacked his snout. This was going to be a long day. |
Adoptable by Echinoderma
For a dragon whose species has a strict social hierarchy, Nyrethi personally doesn’t care much about his rank. That is to say, he has none. Being a visually imperfect specimen has its consequences, although it wasn’t his fault that his appearance is less than satisfactory. A beginning of despair and desolation has affected his entire life, isolating him from most of the world, but being a bright and explorative young dragon Nyrethi has overcome it all. Despite his unfortunate accident in his youth, this Wildclaw has decided to shine a little light on his situation. But there's no way for him to avoid the inexorable truth. |
“No! What have I done? No!!!” Screams of despair ring out from a pale, bubbling—yes, bubbling—Skydancer, her eyes wide with horror as she gazed upon the hatchling in front of her. The young dragon writhed in agony, whimpering softly, eyes just as wide as he looked desperately at his parents. Amazonius and Congora rushed over, frantically hoisting his poisoned body to the healer. His attacker, Laiquasse, continued to weep, her toxins flowing through her tear ducts as she helplessly watched her latest victim. Nyrethi began to scream as the poison burned through him, melting his face and flooding his small body. His green eyes watered, skin burning away, turning pink, then charred black. The hatchling’s parent’s bolted to the medic, who tried everything they could. “Mama, Papa, it hurts,” Nyrethi whispered softly, his eyes watering. “I don’t want to play anymore. Make it better. Please.” Then he said no more, as the skin around his mouth deliquesced and dissolved, sealing his maw forever. To relieve the poor thing’s suffering, the healer fed him three poppy seeds, and his green orbs closed.
____
Laiquasse’s deathly venom did not kill Nyrethi. It was lethal, yes, but the healer had successfully flushed out the terrible fluids that threatened his life. But was it in the young dragon’s best interests to survive? To live with this pain, this haunting memory, and the eternal mockery? There are many nights when Nyrethi cries alone, silent tears running down his scarred face, asking himself the same questions. Will he ever fit in? Will he ever be normal? Will he ever be loved? On some of those nights, the answer is yes. On many others, the answer is still no.
