about. Esten is, at least on first meeting, serious and thoughtful and soft-spoken. He listens more than he talks, and in any disagreement he is calm and sympathetic when other dragons' tempers rise. He may not cede ground, but he always does his best to see things from other points of view, and to find some sort of common ground. But with those he doesn't know well, he does tend to maintain just a little bit of distance, not revealing much about his own emotions or personal history. When he does grow comfortable with someone, other facets of his personality begin to come to light. He approaches life with a wry and sometimes dark sense of humor, and a willingness to accept what comes and deal with it in stride. He is prone to fits of depression, a desire to burrow into the deepest corner of the vault and not come out or speak to anyone, and sometimes gives in to that, but what pulls him out is the sense of purpose he gets from the vault itself, the feeling of building something lasting. Esten does not fight anymore if he can help it, but he still has a powerful (although blunt) command over the element of earth, and is willing to use it to end physical confrontations if necessary. His job in Firnhold is as a negotiator - he often travels far afield, usually with Teramelina, to negotiate trade agreements or ask for items for the vault from other clans. While in the vault, he spends a great deal of time with Francis, with whom he feels a kinship; by contrast, he studiously but politely avoids Rhea and Lune, uncomfortable with the close proximity of other imperials. | ........................ |
history.
Esten has been fighting for what feels like his entire life. His birthplace near the Pillar of the World was haunted constantly by Shade-touched beasts and walking dead abominations from battles long past. He was shaped quickly into a warrior, a soldier - he was left as the sole Imperial of his clan, after his parents went their separate ways, and he took personally his role as the largest and strongest member of the clan, the one who stood between his people and all danger.
Long years passed, centuries of battle with foes that never seemed to diminish in number or ferocity. His dark hide was crossed with pale scars, until he seemed more scar than scale. Esten trained generations of new warriors, passing on his hard-won experience - and watching those bright-eyed young soldiers fall, despite his best efforts. He grew tired. His sense of duty bound him to the clan and his role within it regardless, but he couldn't help but wish for a life without the need for battle.
Sometimes, he wonders if that wish didn't bring about the fate of his clan in some way - it eventually came true, after all, but in the worst way possible. Unexpectedly, a mixed band of marauding dragons swept through, looking to plunder the vast riches of the Earth clan. There was no time to negotiate, no time for the weaker members of the clan to run or hide, and while Esten and his younger comrades stood to fight, they were far outnumbered. His clan was slaughtered, and Esten was left for dead.
