Biography
Sonata
The Founder
The Fading Song of the Clarus Clan
Arrived beneath the Willow on April 8, 2015
A small but intelligent dragon. She was encouraging and guided her lair with a maternal claw. She was often seen smiling and humming as she worked and watched her Clan. Ashlesha was her deputy, and Sonata can still be found curled around his neck, or else flitting about him. Her first companion, Dusk, helped her found the Clan but he has since settled into the role of healer and star-reader. Sonata and Dusk still enjoy taking flights at sunset and chatting with each other when they find the spare time. Sonata is trusting and wishes to see the best in all she meets; Ashlesha stops her when this goes too far, before the Clan is put in danger. Although she is willing to talk and work towards peace, she will not hesitate to fight, and fight hard, to protect her Clanmates, and any hatchlings or weaker dragons who are in danger - even if they are not in her Clan. She cannot stand bullies, and once her trust has been broken, good luck ever repairing it. While she wishes she could move on and forget the past, she often hangs on to every detail and has a hard time letting the past go; when she is not keeping herself busy with other matters at claw, she is grumbling about that obnoxiously-coloured fae who cut Sonata off years ago and ate the plump ladybug she had picked. It takes several gentle reminders from her close friends to bring her back to the present - and any dragons who give her a not-so-gentle reminder will be put on Sonata's blacklist for a few hours, too. |
All of her children have been exalted to serve deities across Sorneith. She is proud of each dragon called by the great gods, and occasionally hears news of their deeds delivered by Remus. |

Only once did one of Sonata's children remain in the Clan rather than move to serve a deity - Adagio, a shy Fae who Sonata was happy to have by her side. All was pleasant. Until one day it was not. Adagio grew to harbour a great distaste for the Clan and an unshakable grudge against her father, and in turn, her mother. Sonata fought to control her daughter, but Adagio fought just as hard to usurp her mother from the leadership. The Clan was split in two from the civil unrest, with Sonata's trusted priest Sarako turning his back on the ways of the Clarus Clan and attacking his fellow Clanmates. He shouted for his followers to join him, to assist Adagio in claiming the throne. Not everyone was willing to obey, to go against their matriarch, and so Sarako sacrificed them to the Gladekeeper - murdering the Clanmates he had been praying for just days before. The death toll grew before Sarako could be stopped, executed, and Adagio confined in a prison which Ashlesha constructed from his Willow. Sonata could not bring herself to execute her daughter, despite the Clan crying for Adagio's blood. "It is not our way," she said, her Fae monotone not able to detract from the grief visible in her frills, in her sobbing shoulders, in her wet eyes. After that, Sonata was unable to continue as leader. She stepped down with a heavy heart, ordering Ashlesha to lead the Clan until the Councils were able to decide how to proceed. Not a day passed before a tiny aqua Fae with remarkably familiar eyes showed up, claiming to hail from the Prince of a near-by Clan and the founder's daughter of the Clarus Clan. Sonata immediately knew who this had to be - Adagio's daughter, Sonata's own grand-daughter. A child with a tainted history but with a clear soul. A child who had found her way to her home, who was destined to lead. Sonata spoke with the Clan's three Councils, a debate raging for two days and three nights. Finally, it was decided. The leadership would pass to the young one, Aria. Sonata faded into the background of what was once her Clan, watching but no longer speaking, never singing. Before she stepped down at last, Sonata turned to Ashlesha. She was loath to ask for help, but she knew she could trust her friend and trusted deputy with one last wish. And so she gave him one final command - "Protect the young Aria as you have protected me." Since then, Sonata has been a silent presence in the Clarus Clan, watching from afar. She does her best to help out with chores and errands, but she prefers to avoid the company of many dragons except her closest companions. As such, she will choose tasks from Aurora's list which require lonely work, sometimes nocturnal work. Her heart longs for the day when the dragons in her Clan no longer look at her with a spark of fear in their eyes. She has become used to seeing her Clanmates look at her with their unvoiced questions, wondering if maybe her song is hypnotizing them after all... |
