Biography

Saryah

Dark Creeper Duskrat Fossilized Leaf

(I didn't proofread/spell check any of this yet. Sorry.)

When anyone asks, Saryah will tell them that she has no charge. That she's afraid of finding her charge. Many might find that a bit odd, but those who know her background understand. When she came of age, Saryah set off away from home alongside her brother Shadowfall, each to find their charge. Shadowfall found his first. An abandoned tower along the boarder between the Scarred Wasteland and the Tangled Woods. Hesitant to continue her journey all alone, Saryah chose to stay with her brother for a while. Shadowfall took on a mate with which he had three hatchlings. These hatchlings were still incredibly long by the time their parents next raised a nest. Saryah couldn't imagine parenting, but was disappointed to see her brother spend more time with his charge than with his own children.

Disaster struck while the hatchlings were still young and before the eggs had hatched. Terrible disease struck, melting the flesh of those it touched. Shadowfall's mate fell. Saryah begged her brother to leave, but Shadowfall refused to leave the tower, not even to help his own children escape. Saryah did her best to escape with the young dragons latching onto her back, protected as best as they could be by her wings, and with the eggs swept away in a satchel but she did not make it out fully unharmed. The disease struck at her sides and at her face, but she ran through the pain trying her hardest to get her nieces and nephews out alive. As she ran through the Tangled Woods, something odd happened. The disease stopped spreading through her flesh and the pain of opened wounds began to fade. The Woods themselves saw her courage and had begun to heal her. Where she had been touched by disease, glowing bark of the Tangled Woods began to grow.

Saryah made it away from the danger but had nowhere to go. She was weak and tired and hurting, as were the young hatchlings now walking beside her. She ended up making her way all the way towards Melody Town and spotted the University. Here, she found healers who helped her and the young dragons. Feeling unfit to care for the children herself, Saryah found an older dragon, Caeruleus, who became a father to them and to the dragons that hatched from the eggs Saryah had saved. After that, Saryah was deeply afraid of finding her charge. She'd seen what it had down to Shadowfall. He would rather let himself die than help his own family survive. He destroyed himself. She chose to stay at the University outside of Melody Town for a while, perhaps forever, without a charge.

Shortly after the new guardians had hatched, while Saryah was still recovering, a new dragon arrived needing help from the healers. A mirror that was badly injured; one of his front legs seemed to have been torn off. Saryah felt something strange inside of her. She figured it was empathy for the dragon. She'd gone through something terrible herself, and his injuries looked very painful. Though it felt somehow stronger. Saryah wanted to leave him alone and give him time to rest and heal, but it was hard to keep herself from checking on him.

She found him recovering in a den outside the University, appearing much better, but he didn't say much. She continued to check in over the next few days, feeling like a dragon who had gone through something so hard shouldn't have to be alone. It wasn't long until he opened up to her. His name was Chronos. He was a bad hunter, and when he was injured his pack left him for dead. Adventurers from Melody Town had brought him here to safety. He'd always been more magically inclined, anyway, but he was still trying to prove himself to a family that didn't care about him. He planned to stay at the University to learn time magic. Saryah told him about herself too, and that she planned to stay because she was afraid to find her charge.

Chronos healed, and studied intently. Saryah occasionally joined in, but she had little interest in Chronos' time magic. They grew to be close friends, although Saryah was already attached to him. She figured that she could perhaps be falling for him; she didn't know what that felt like. Her parents hadn't been around very long, and Shadowfall always seemed to love his charge more than his mate. It didn't matter much though. Saryah and Chronos both found their way into their own little family alongside Exe, a seer, and Bugbear, an electrical engineer. It seemed like there would be plenty of time to sort out such feelings.

One day however, things came tumbling down. Saryah knew something was wrong, and knew that Chronos was involved. Everything felt odd, as if time had stopped around them. Saryah rushed to the great workshop to find Chronos, glad that he was in one of the places in the University that could accommodate a guardian. It was odd. He had all four of his legs. He didn't remember her. She didn't have time to think about that. Outside she saw Desdemona, whose charge is the University, fighting Bellguard, the mechanical guardian whose charge is the clock tower at the center of Melody Town. Without much thought, Saryah found her way outside and began to fight alongside Desdemona with equal ferocity.

Bellguard backed down, but muttered something about a dragon whose experiment with time had damaged her clock tower. Chronos. Bellguard said she would be back to kill that dragon if it happened again. Desdemona threatened that she would fight to the death if Bellguard if were to ever harm the University. She didn't say anything herself, but Saryah felt the same way.

When Bellguard finally left, Desdemona commented that if it ever happened again, she'd kill the time traveler herself to keep Bellguard away. Saryah stopped for a moment in silence, trying to think of what to say. Finally, she said to Desdemona that if she were to do so, she would be betraying her own charge by preventing the pursuit of knowledge. Desdemona sighed and reluctantly agreed, though to this day she is wary of Chronos and quick to threaten him whenever he experiments with time magic. And each time, Saryah is quick to come to Chronos' side, ready to defend him against Desdemona and ready to defend him against Bellguard. Even if Chronos is destroying Melody Town. Even if Chronos is destroying Sornieth. And even if it kills her.
