━━━━━━━━━━━━ b i o ━━━━━━━━━━━━

Berry once walked with a heavy burden on his shoulder, a burden given to him at birth by a now exiled mother and a king for a father. Despite this, his step is silent and swift, making him a brilliant scout. Berry's life has been unfairly difficult ever since he was born, with himself being the reason and the catalyst for many dreadful events in the clan. Used as a pawn for his mother's insubordination, Berry never grew up with a sense of self worth. His life was dedicated to someone else, and never to himself. So when he met Sylvari, a graceful, if girlish skydancer, he clung on and refused to let go. Sylvari not only put up with him, but built him into a fine young dragon. Others noticed, making his life difficult, but soon turned their backs on him when he announced his mateship to Sylvari. Again, controversy surrounded the pair, but Berry was sick of the spotlight. As such, he took his job seriously, going to great lengths to make himself unseen. Due to this he has very little friends, and prefers to rest in the back of Sylvari's shop, where no one bothers him.

Berry covers himself with the fine garb that Sylvari has made, but still wears his father's antlers. He is still his father's son, even if he's denounced the role as leader. It's... sentimental.

Berry had a single son to another dragon in the lair, however for reasons unknown he disappeared, during one of Pyre's lectures. Pyre had decided to school the child herself, to make sure the child did not turn out like his grandmother and uncles, but now the child was gone and Berry blames no one but himself for his negligence. Pyre's guidance was always better suited to warriors, not hatchlings. Berry often searches for his son, and secretly hopes he's hidden himself and his past in a clan far away from the clinging vines of Nature.

Berry's son did give him a gift though. A child, called Yuki. A single daughter from a single son. While he may not have Yuki anymore, Berry cherishes Rae and spoils her like his own daughter. She trained under his wing, and he is so proud of her.

Berry's favourite food is spiders, and decorates himself with their webs. Sylvari hates spiders however, and thus Berry must insist every time the webs are empty, before Sylvari will even go near him. Berry has discovered a trick with spider's silk, and has harvested the silk now for months. Sylvari will only touch it once it's been bleached and cleaned by Berry, but Berry's small habit has resulted in strong yet flexible silks, causing a breakthrough in Sylvari's business. Thanks to his clever mate, Sylvari runs one of the biggest fabric industries, and has an entire level dedicated to his and his artisan's crafts. Berry is always welcome.

It was after dinner, and Modremoth had called the skydancers together for a wind down and preening session. Feathered wings decorated in rich coloured flapped gently in the afternoon breeze, while females and males tittered and gossiped. Berry stood amongst the other males, watching as they milled about in their gorgeous colours and gentle patterns. His father, the king, with his adoring advisor. His own partner, tall and elegant, his colours seeming to soothe the once brash attitude. Golds and silvers and blues spun around him, while his bold red throbbed like a dying heartbeat. Gods, he hated himself.

Born the son of a king, doomed to take his place. He was born, raised, bred to take over the throne by his vindictive mother. When she was exiled, fearing eyes turned on him, waiting for him to morph into the throne-slayer his mother had trained him to be.
He had abandoned all that and chosen to be with the one dragon who believed in him. Sovari, the dead name of a very much alive skydancer. At the time he had chosen the blue skydancer, and bred with another dragon to produce just one heir. Yuki. His son was beautiful, but upon learning of his torrid history, he’d fled. Berry was proud of him for that, for doing the one thing that he’d longed to do. To flee, to just run and hide so that no one could ever find him. But he stayed for Sovari.

And when his mother was sold to a blue and brown tundra, and half the clan split, he nearly left, if it wasn’t for a gentle hand around his wrist, holding him back. Looking into the green eyes of his mate, he turned around and headed back.

When Sovari came down sick, and begged the skydancer to find a new body for him, or watch him die… Berry hunted down a single spiral who knew a spell for reincarnation. It was Sovari who was the first dragon to change their body but keep their mind. He was the prototype. But Sovari was truly and completely dead. Sylvari had taken his place.

Berry chewed his nails not unlike his father’s and mused. He hadn’t changed his body because of his own family. He was a Royal, son of the king, grandfather of Yuki’s child, who had returned to the clan as a herald and a scout. If he chose another body… would he still be connected by blood to his family? Would Sylvari still recognise the new body? Would he even be the same?

The thoughts churned in his head, making him feel agitated. He felt sick. He’d tried to hide the intrusive thoughts, shattered the mirrors in his and Sylvari’s house, avoided reflective surfaces, covered himself in order to hide his pain but he couldn’t run. He was like a shadow, permanently attached to the thing he hated the most.

Himself.

Breaking away from the throng of skydancers, he dove off the highest section of the Tree and glided in the direction of the Swamp. He was chasing one dragon. Maybe she had what he needed.

Sylvari saw him go, and hesitated, before silently following.

“Ye want to change yae colours?”

The dusty pearlcatcher sat there, appraising Berry. Her room was dark and mouldy. Light did not penetrate this far in the Swamp. The air hung thick and heavy, and odd lights chased bugs through the room in whatever pale wind reached this place. Jars and vials littered the room, some balancing precariously on piles of scrolls and tomes. Runes scattered the floor, and everywhere Berry could spy food – a cheese roll wedged between two books, a pan full of rotten bacon, a half empty jam jar rolling on its side. The pearlcatcher even now was pulling out olives and fish canape, to serve on stale bread.

“Please, help yaeself. It is not often a Royal graces us down here at the Swamp.” The pearlcatcher smiled, revealing rows of chipped teeth. Berry pulled slightly away, raising his hand in a polite dismissal.

“I’ve come to talk to you, Ursa. I’ve heard you’ve helped other dragons here before.”

The pearlcatcher chuckled, before smearing some canape onto some bread.

“I’ve helped many dragons before. Ye may have to be more specific, Royal.”

“My name is Berry-“

“I know.”

He sighed, before starting again. “My name is Berry, and I’m referring to dragons such as Pyre, Endo and Kafani.”

Ursa pursed her lips, trying to remember the connection. Chewing on the fishy bread, she clicked her fingers.

“Ye missed one! Hunter, oh he was a pretty boy. Shame he ended up those terribly gaudy colours. Suited his personality though.”

“That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. I…. I hate myself. I was hoping you could help me fix that.”

“Oh honey, a new look does not fix the mind. It requires more than just that. Plus, it’s a very expensive procedure and I cannot guarantee any results! Tea?”

Berry waved his hand once more. Gripping the roll of paper in his hands, Berry thrust it out, dropping a wadded up roll of money on the desk. Welded together by the nervous dragon’s sweat, it bounced once before thudding on the floor. Berry stared at it before quickly picking it up and placing it gently on the desk.

The pearlcatcher sat back down, empty tea cup in her hand.

“Are ye sure ye really want to do this?”

Berry nodded.

“Have ye told ye partner? This is an important deal.”

“He doesn’t need to see what I’m doing. It’s for the best that he doesn’t know.”

Ursa sighed, looking at the door. The skydancer concealed behind it stifled a sob. Ursa stood back up again, and took his hand.
“Come with me, lad. The pool’s just over here.”

Sylvari watched on in horror as his mate walked on into the backyard. Quickly running out of sight, he sank down in the thick bog, milky white silks forgotten about. His mate was in dire peril. The stocky pearlcatcher leading him was a dangerous witch, and he didn’t trust a single potion she had in her bag. If Berry wanted a change, couldn’t one of his permanent dyes have helped? Why must he put his life in this pearlcatcher’s hands?!

Berry stripped down and sank into the muck, discarding the beautiful cloths Sylvari had bought for him many years ago. The glimmer from the pile meant he had taken the ring off too. Sylvari wiped the tears from his eyes, smearing swamp mud over his face.
The pearlcatcher poured the first vial in. He screamed, the stuff hissing and burning on his skin. The pearlcatcher hurriedly checked the vial, before throwing it high into the air and running back into the cottage. Sylvari burst out of the muck, staggering onto the porch and shaking himself like a dog. Slipping on the slime, he ran towards Berry, who was trying to pull himself out of the pool. Reaching a paw in, Sylvari hissed as the contents burned at his claws before grabbing Berry’s shoulder and pulling him out. Berry scrabbled at the porch. As he lay gasping at Sylvari’s feet, he recoiled in horror. Berry was hideous. His once beautiful crimson fur was now a bright magenta, and his multihued mulberry wings were now a flat rose. His bright red belly wasn’t even a nice shade of blue, it was teal.
“Berry what have you done what have you done whyyyy?” Sylvari moaned, grasping at Berry before pulling away.

Berry looked away, actively avoiding Sylvari’s eyes.

“Am… I beautiful yet?”

Fat tears began to roll down Sylvari’s cheeks. He tried his hardest to lie, to say everything was okay, and that he still loved him.

“…No.”

Picking up the ring that Berry had left, Sylvari turned and fled. He couldn’t bear to look at the once beautiful dragon that now lay on that porch. Berry lifted his head to watch the skydancer go. He hoped Sylvari would forgive him.

All he needed was to break that image in Sylvari’s head.

The flutter of wings behind him meant that the vial of sparks Ursa had thrown had reached its intended target. A young spiral with an old face landed in front of him, holding an ancient patched-together scroll. Ursa came out of the house with a freshly killed skydancer baby, its colours muted and delicate. It was beautiful.

Phase two could now begin.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Berry raised his hand to knock. He paused, and lowered it. Then, taking a breath and slowly sighing, he raised his hand again.

“Do you need somebody?”

Sylvari stood behind him, voice firm and unwavering. Under his arms was a washbasket, the sweet smell of flowers coming from his latest batch of silks.

“…Berry.” His voice was hoarse and sore.

The pale skydancer’s eyes narrowed. “He doesn’t live here anymore. Were you a friend of his?”

“Syl… Syl…vari…”

The skydancer stood awkwardly. “Yes,” he gestured with his other hand. “That’s me. Listen, what are you here for? Speak up?”
Berry stopped and looked at his home, then at the skydancer behind him. With an expression of great sorrow, he stepped towards Sylvari, rubbing the spot on his finger where the ring used to be.

“It’s…. me.”

Sylvari’s eyes widened and his shoulders drop. For a second, the mask slipped and Berry could see the late nights spent crying. The gossamer skydancer was hurting, and no amount of elegance and beauty could hide the pain. But, it was a brief second, and Sylvari gathered himself, adjusted the washbasket on his hip, and walked past Berry, taking care to ram a shoulder into him as he passed. Berry didn’t move from the impact, his young muscles taking the force, and he watched Sylvari wince as he rubbed his now sore shoulder.

Berry smiled and followed Sylvari in. Sylvari was not going to forgive him easily, if he knew his mate. And Berry knew he had a lot to make up for.

The Prince was now the stranger. By giving up his body, he gave up his heritage. He now had no connection to his family. His father would understand, same with his granddaughter. But he had finally bought silence. It cost everything, but he finally had peace.
