Let me play with fire.

━━━━━━━━━━━━ b i o ━━━━━━━━━━━━

Sonnai is a wild child. No one knows how she got here, she just fell out of the sky… like a fiery comet. Like the other skydancers, she was tall, beautiful, and slender, but unlike the other skydancers, she had a brazenness that could end up disastrous for her. Already, the diviners predicted injury or financial loss, but they couldn’t specify if they were talking about Sonnai specifically.

Sonnai’s single-minded passion for fire meant she was a danger to the thick jungle surrounding the Tree, but no one wants to tell her that she needs to leave. Plus, her odd dancing and singing at night creates an excellent lightshow and has attracted the attention of market travellers. To get her to cooperate, Brianna and the other artisans have asked for her to participate at practices, but she has yet to turn up.

Her audience has figured out that if they throw tips made of paper money at her, then she will turn around and ignite them in mid-air. Despite the popularity of that game, it was quickly shut down when an overzealous guardian threw a marketstall, with the inhabitant still inside.

He suffered third degree burns.

Now the crowd throws lumps of metal, glass, and lumps of sand, which she quickly gathers and hoards. The hatchlings warn she is building a massive statue of another dragon, but the hatchlings are prone to tall tales. Besides, what danger could she be with a few lumps of glass and some shiny rocks?

The last ray of sun disappeared behind the trees, and the horizon echoed wisps of pink and teal. Behind her, night had already caught up. Abovethe thick mass of rock, she could see inky blue, with the first stars already appearing.

Already the stars had begun to move and dance, twinkling into darkness and re-appearing in another place. The stars didn’t stand still for long, and neither should she. Hiding the flint between her fingers, she began to brush her clothes, breathing over the sparks like a mother with her newborns. The fading sparks twinkled like her stars, disappearing before returning brighter. She was starting to alight.

Noticing the arrival of curious onlookers, she quickly slid her goggles over her green eyes. A foolish young courter had called them ‘as crispy as pears on a summer morn’. He had been incinerated, along with his pretty words. Her eyes betrayed her. She was a fire primal, she knew it in her soul! She had as much power with her flames as any dragon blessed with the orange eye. She just needed to be clever with her unrefined skill.

They had noticed. Surrounding her were masses of orange, gleaming eyes. Primals, draped in gleaming metal armor, while commons scurried out of their way. The hierarchy was clear. The primals had true power, while the rare eyes were second. Her eyes were unusual – but of the wrong element.

Pradis, a tall black guardian with dark orange eyes – rare – strode over to her, claws clicking on the stone. “They’re watching you,” he rumbled, hiding the audience in his mass of leather wings. His golden armor reflected many versions of herself back. “Now is your chance to prove yourself.”

She glanced at him, then stared at herself, gawkish and sprawny. He thought he knew, but he didn’t know the stakes she held. He only thought she was a young skydancer trying to prove her might against the primals. He didn’t understand her own primal fascination with the fire that burned inside them. His eyes were a badge, a link to a faction that operated within the Great Furnace. To her, it was a brand, signifying his place within a cult that she had no access to, no privilege.

But she had come this far.

When she didn’t respond, but tend to her fires, he sighed and dropped his curtain of a wing. Closing the gap, he traced a finger around her waist, before tugging her close. Sonnai ignored him, intent on keeping her soot covered hands away from his sight. A pressure, like his giant paw wrapped around her waist made her gasp, but she still refused to look at him or what he was doing.

Stepping back, he spun and roared as the audience roared back. Raising her arms up, Sonnai began her channelling, summoning the winds to take her fires up higher than they’d ever crested. Spiralling into streams of liquid fire, she wove and spun, running her flints up her scales to create more sparks. She was shining. A misstep on some loose stone made her stumble, but she barely noticed. A wave of liquid fire was hanging above her, poised like a giant, deadly chandelier. It spun and glittered, dangling, dripping. Beads of sweat rose, hissing away into wisps of steam. She waved her hand to try and get it to dissipate. It didn’t move.

She stepped back, but it followed her. Rubbing her hands up her scales to distract it, as well as the audience, she noticed with a gasp that her flint was gone. She’d dropped it. Knowing her luck, it may have also been the stone that tripped her. Breaking her stare with the deadly wave, she glanced down – and noticed some of the primals looking at it. Catching her stare, their eyes narrowed.

In a fit of terror, she spun and whirled harder, mane flying and bells tinkling. Wait, bells tinkling? She was a fire maiden, not some wind wench! Distracted again, she looked down at her dancing garb. Wrapped around her waist, clear against her golden armor, was a plain green band. It was tightly knotted, with bells hanging off the ends. They tinkled their betrayal, as all pretence was gone. There stood the wind wench, with sparks fading, wax dribbling down her armor, candlewicks emitting fine plumes of smoke. She was a fraud, a sham, a being of air using her strengths to convince true brethren that she was stronger.

It had taken but a few seconds for the primals to notice. The sash around her waist, the way the air rushed into the room for the fire to take hold. The barrier of air keeping her fate sealed abover her.

But wind elementals cannot make liquid fire. Only primals can.

Sonnai noticed her error far too late. The primals had taken her fire and warped it into a monstrosity that only they could control. They couldn’t just rub their superiority in her face, now they strove to kill her with it. A fire burned within her, one that would have no effect against the real thing. It was her own, pure anger. Despair and malice about her birth, the sway of elements that decided her fate, overtook her. She dropped the barrier, and let the hot lava envelop her.

It was agony.

But it was not her death sentence.

Let them burn.

Soon they’ll learn what happens when you starve a flame of air.
