Experience is simply the name I give to my mistakes.

Isa is a craftswoman with a touch for magic. Cast out by a clan of lightning for reasons she won't admit, she has brought along the flight's rigid ideals and drive for efficiency. As a result, she has found a practical use for her impractical talent - golemancy.

Isa hates the expendable nature of the Lightning flight - back at home she was just another cog in the wheel, but in her new home people bother to remember her name. It doesn't take much. Isa is classed as a beauty even among skydancers, and her acknowledgement is highly sought after among the plainer-garbed denizens of the Tribe.

It didn't take long after her entry into the Tribe before she had set up connections, and large chunks of semi-precious stones, marble, glass, and gold were being carted by guardians and snappers to her tent. Even her tent was a mystery, for it acted only as an entrance to a much larger room carved into the foot of the Tree. Backing onto the basement of the Library, the steady incoming of expensive materials made many a head turn. Isa herself would disappear for hours at a time, emerging covered in white dust only to sign some connotes from the delivery dragons, and duck back in again. The results of her labour, however, have proven to be a genuine help to the other dragons.

An old pearlcatcher slowly glided his way down the tree-face, adjusting his wingspread ever so slightly to avoid the massive branches. His green, leathery wings acted as a parachute, making his descent slow, if not graceful. He knew in his age, grace would no longer come to him lightly. Not like the skydancers he was visiting today, whose every movement belied a natural elegance.
Landing with a stumble on a particularly large branch, Voltair pulled out his cane from his belt and began to walk towards the balcony of Modremoth, the leader of the Tribe.

Jake noticed him first, and Voltair watched the young advisor's head duck away from the door, off to alert Modremoth. By the time Voltair had reached the entrance, Jake had already set out some afternoon tea on a fine embroidered rug. Lowering himself onto one of the overstuffed pillows, Voltair watched Modremoth enter the room. As he suspected, the dragon gave no evidence of his age. In fact, he seemed even stronger and wiser than before. Modremoth nodded his welcome to the elder dragon and took a seat.

""Afternoon, Voltair. How's the wife?""

A grunt from the pearlcatcher ended the opportunity for small talk. Shuffling through his bag, he pulled out a stack of notes, covered in his characteristic scrawl.

""One of your merchants has been reporting more costs than profit. She is operating at a cost to your Tribe. In fact, just today, she's put in a purchase order for 2 million treasure worth of semi-precious gems! We just don't have that type of money, Modremoth!""

The skydancer looked puzzled.

""Which one is it?""

Voltair peered at his notes, having forgotten his glasses at home.

""A new kid. Isa. Skydancer just like you. Always bloody skydancers,"" he grumbled. Modremoth pretended not to notice, instead choosing to rise off his pillow. Jake followed quickly.

""I say we take a little visit. Voltair, would you care to join us?""

The pearlcatcher begrudgingly obliged.

Isa buried her head inside the torso of her newest marvel. Ikki looked on with interest, though her fins drooped in doubt. A second passed, and Isa surfaced again.

“I can’t see it anymore. It’s well and truly gone. I’m going to give it a tilt, but do you wanna see if you can see in, Ikki? You’re smaller.”

Ikki was indeed smaller. She could almost curl up inside the golem’s body. But she had waited until Isa had figured that out herself. There was no point in telling the younger dragon. She would get too lazy, otherwise.

“Which screwdriver is it this time?” Ikki flapped over to the body, perching carefully on the edge of the hole.

Isa sighed. “No, this time it was a wrench. One of the good ones, that don’t conduct electricity.” She grabbed the shoulders of the torso and tipped it sideways, causing Ikki to fall in the hole. A loud screech came from the fae as Isa hoisted it higher.

“What are you doing you airbrained lack-wit! Watch your bloody surroundings before you kill-“ Ikki paused in her chastisement, her eyes staring at the entrance to the dimly-lit tent. Her entire body was hanging out of the golem, but that slight annoyance paled in comparison to the dragons entering the shop. Isa followed her gaze and gulped.

Ikki sighed softly. “You’ve done it now, kiddo. You’ve caught the gaze of Modremoth.”

He was gorgeous. Isa stared at the brilliant blue skydancer, and his glittering body. Lights danced off his wings and seemed to trickle down his back. He studied her with a cool difference, seeming to give her the same treatment.

Her heart broke when he looked away. He was out of her league, but he too was out of the league of the golden skydancer. His dark body was so covered in gold that he chimed as he walked. He was much older, older than Ikki, but his hard face still harboured a softness for the blue skydancer.

Ikki saw the teenager start to drift in another girlish foolishness and threw a cog at her. “Bow!” she cried. Isa only stood in dejected silence, earning herself another well-aimed cog. Voltair chose that moment to walk in, and he saw a dusty pink skydancer get attacked by what appeared to be a giant stone torso. He waved his fingers above his chest as a sign to the deities, and contemplating backing out of the door. Serves him right for his curiosity.

Modremoth addressed the pink skydancer.

“Isa.”

She snapped out of her overactive imagination and faced him.

“I hear you’ve been trying to bankrupt the Tribe’s coffers. You have only been in the marketplace for a month at most. Is this how you pay the Tribe for their generosity?”

Isa stammered a weak excuse. The expenditure was necessary, even though her experimentations had yet to amass any profit. One had worked, but she was loathe to show anyone. It was still a prototype; it hadn’t been tested properly. Ikki had thought the same, when Isa had shown her. She was still working on the electronics when Isa had checked in last.

“Modremoth,” Ikki interjected, climbing out of the hole. “She’s been working under my tutelage. I apologise if the expenditure is too great, you may take it out of my wages. But do not punish the girl yet. I loathe to say this lest her seedy head grows too big, but the kid has some use to the Tribe.”

Jake rushed to offer Ikki a hand. “What even is this, tinkerer?” he gestured to the stone torso. Ikki chuckled.

“This, Jake, is a golem. Or half of it, as it may be. The other half is still out in the Wilds somewhere, probably shattered under a temple collapse. Isa has been putting it together with gold. See how it shimmers?” The fae ran her hand down the stomach of the golem and a wrench clattered out the other side of the hole. Ikki spat at it.

Jake looked incredibly bored. “How can a lump of rock be any use to the Tribe? And how can it start paying back what you two owe?”

Isa stared at him, then started to glow. Her pale blue eyes glassed over, and the tools on the floor began to clatter. Ikki lowered her fins in trepidation. She was too far away; this hadn’t been tested –

A large thump was heard from the back room. Another thump, and a clatter. Ikki silently noted the possibility of crafting some glass eyes. The thumps started to increase, as Jake backed away. The door of the backroom splintered open as a hand pushed its way through, followed by a marble shoulder. A lump of unfinished rock covered in charcoal scribblings graced massive stone shoulders, which gingerly passed through the doorframe. Standing up, the golem was taller than Modremoth, though it stood at quite a limp. Small gems dotted its frame, gently pulsing a pale pink glow The one on its forehead glowed the brightest, and pulsed quicker the closer it got to the other dragons.

The golem was moving – without any wires or physical contact. Echoing its controller’s motions, it placed a massive hand on the shoulder of the other golem torso, before its charcoal-covered head turned to watch Isa.

Ikki was stunned. It was her turn to stutter.

“Clearly, Modremoth, sir, it has not been tested. I do not know her range of abilities, or what allows her to control it. I was only using her as an apprentice sir –” Her monotonous voice quietened to a whisper.

“Please don’t send her to the Swamp.”

Modremoth turned to whisper quietly to his blue beau. A deep sigh echoed from them both. He had heard of these rumours and did not care to partake in them just now. They simply had no time.

After a nod from Jake, and a cursory nod to Voltair, Modremoth stepped in front of the silent golem. Without even looking at Isa, he started to speak.

“Continue studies on this new technology. Perhaps we could use something of this size and stature in the building of the new dragon homes. Perhaps enquire about using pumice to reduce costs and lighten the weight of these beings. Use marble for golems of defence. These may serve a purpose yet. However, and I take this very seriously. If this beast endangers any of the dragons on the lands of the Tribe, then it will be dismantled and melted at the Great Furnace. Do you understand me?”

Both Isa and the golem nodded sheepishly.

“Cut back on the costs and keep me informed. I expect to see something useful by the end of this month.”

Jake didn’t wait for Modremoth to leave the room. He simply did not have the patience for such cursory matters. Isa’s golem pined after his retreating form, Modremoth noted. It didn’t matter, he eventually concluded. He had much bigger issues than a lovesick teenager.

Ikki waited for the tent flap to swing closed before she threw the wrench at her apprentice.
