B I O G R A P H Y

Long after Loretta grew up and left her nursery, she knew she wanted to work with hatchlings. Watching the bouncing little monsters grow and learn made her heart soar. She knew how difficult raising them could be, so she often offered her time to watch them when the new and experienced mothers needed a break.

The hatchlings often became excited when Loretta’s name was mentioned, and it would take nothing short of letting them see her to get them to settle down. Knowing the little dragons loved her so much made her dizzy with happiness. It saddened her to see them take a path away from her clan, but she still made it her mission not to let them leave without knowing the ways of dragon society, the dangers of the beastclans, and the history of Sornieth.

A love of teaching was instilled in her at a very young age. The hatchlings she grew up with found it annoying when she wanted to play school, because why would you do that after having lessons for three hours that day already? When they were grown, however, they ate their words when they saw that it was only Loretta who could keep the babies’ attention and get them to remember due to her exciting methods. Which was an absolute blessing to the easily irritated Milan, because the hatchlings would often get into all her work since they had nothing to do.

_Kelp Tendies_

____There’s almost never a dull day of teaching for Loretta. It’s so exhausting watching baby spirals zoom around the cave every day, and nearly every day there’s some dispute or another to settle. It takes an observant eye to notice when hatchlings don’t like each other, or when they bring an argument from the nursery to lessons.

The most common quarrel between hatchlings was when one had stolen another’s toy. A ridgeback Loretta had once taught was known for “borrowing” only one specific toy from another: a kelp tender plushie with button eyes and yarn for whiskers. It was a cute toy. The fae who rightfully owned the plushie would scream every morning in her shrill voice, “Yeonic stole my kelp tendie again!” Loretta would have to wrestle the plush from Yeonic’s unwilling claws. Every. Morning. Loretta could still hear the echoes of that voice in her dreams.

_Learning Cave_

____The tent was too small for Loretta and her hatchlings to feel comfortable. The spirals needed more room to zip about, and many times the little ones didn’t like to sit so close to others they didn’t like. Especially after the kelp tendie plushie incident. The learning tent needed to be severely upgraded, but they couldn’t build anything permanent as Skyloft constantly moved.

Loretta turned to Zahhak, a rather solitary druid who had just enough magical prowess to raise and lower the earth to hollow out a big enough cave, after getting permission from Milan, who thought it was a crime to raise dumb hatchlings. The strain of using up so much energy at once often left Zahhak out of commission for days, so Loretta went to the bakers to have them prepare all kinds of pastries for him in return. Zahhak liked to pretend he was mysterious, but Loretta’s keen eye had seen how big his sweet tooth is.
