Biography
The whispering passage leads you to a solitary chamber, where layers of cobwebs wreathe the low ceilings.
At the room's center stands a—glass? crystal?—statue, its mouth fixed in a taunting, sharp-toothed grin.
A dull light emanates from beneath its eerily lifelike scales. Somehow, there isn't a speck of dust on its gleaming surface.

V A L E S K A,
a golem with just a little too much free will to really be of any practical use, much to Caieta and Tatlim's dissatisfaction. |
╭━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╮ _________________________________✉ Valeska’s waking order was simple enough. In her immaculate handwriting, Caieta had inscribed “SPEAK” on a lavender sheet of memo paper before folding it in quarters and carefully wedging it into Valeska’s open mouth. As per Tatlim’s design, Valeska’s deepsea bulb switched on as she chewed thoughtfully over her instructions. Then, to her creators’ bewilderment, Valeska wrinkled her nose and wordlessly spat the newly crumpled missive back out. The note’s edges were blackened and singed as if by a dying coal fire, and it quickly caught flame and burned to ash when Tatlim stooped to inspect it. Valeska hadn’t even opened her eyes. ╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯ |

╭━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╮ ____________________________________✉ The night after Valeska’s failed awakening, three books—two texts on enchantment theory and one on advanced cursebreaking—disappear from Caieta’s study. At daybreak, Olum stumbles upon their empty bindings while pacing the ramparts. The pages are nowhere to be found. Naturally, Caieta’s first suspect is the golem. However, there’s nothing—not a single disturbance in the chamber’s thick blanket of dust, not a trace of lingering foreign energy—that suggests any kind of mischief. By the following morning, five more of Caieta’s books have vanished—including, most worryingly, a log of Caieta’s own attempts at everlasting preservation, compiled during her fateful tenure at the Fortress of the Ends. This time, Olum finds the bindings littered around the courtyard, discarded like candy wrappers after All Hallow’s Eve. Though Caieta refuses to let the ongoing thefts spur her into a panic, she asks Basil to remove the rest of her collection from the Warren for safekeeping. The next dawn, Caieta wakes to something square and jagged lodged firmly, painfully in her windpipe. After a harrowing minute of hacking and coughing, she finally spits a haphazardly folded sheet of lavender memo paper into her trembling palm. With dread swirling in the pit of her stomach, she unfurls it to discover “SHUT UP” scrawled across it in a shaky, uneven hand. There’s still no sign of movement from golem’s chamber, but Valeska’s core, visible through her translucent scales, seems to have developed a faint, inexplicable glow. For the next two weeks, Caieta has no voice. She’s fairly certain that her sore throat has more to do with the papercuts in her trachea than with some vengeful golem’s first attempt at curselaying, but she and Tatlim personally seal off the entrance to Valeska’s chamber anyway. No more books go missing, but Valeska's core never loses its strange luminance. ╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯ |
