"As you wish" Years of battle prepared Surefoot to be Oliana’s bodyguard. He spent his most of life fighting for glory and treasure in the coliseum-but a pit fighter's life is painful, and usually not a long one. He left that life to wander Sornieth, unsure of direction and purpose. The snarling and screaming of past opponents still rang in his ears. Work wasn't hard to find. Sornieth is a dangerous place; there's always demand for a sword-for-hire. Life was still a constant battle, and it weighed on him. He slept poorly, if at all. He saw danger in every leaf fluttering on the breeze and every whispering blade of grass. He never let down his guard, on a job or off. The memories of the pit hung in his consciousness, bubbling to the surface in the quiet, after dark. The ringing of steel and the howling of the wounded kept him from sleep. Oliana changed that, even if she didn't mean to. The danger remained, but her kindness and enthusiasm for life made him feel as if he were safe. Finally, after years of fighting, Surefoot felt like he was home. As they grew closer he told her of his exploits, and of the memories that haunted him--and she understood. He felt a kindred spirit in Oriana, someone equally haunted by the past. Their kinship turned to a deep affection, which then blossomed into… something more. Neither of them will dare speak its name yet. The clan gossips, as all clans do, but Surefoot and Oliana have questions of loyalty to consider. Loyalty to the clan, to one's mate, and for Surefoot, a fierce loyalty to the one who gave him a second chance at life. -by dogface |
