The cold, unforgiving depths of Sornieth’s outer oceans hold strange creatures both dangerous and elusive. Some, like Izmedu, resemble dragonkind in a way most unsettling. Without cause, few of these monsters ever find their way to shore, but there are always exceptions.

Izmedu had the great misfortune to be found by King and his group of fanatics. Fished up from the depths in a net of impossible strength and durability, he was treated as an interesting specimen of study. He struggled to learn to breathe air painlessly and walk instead of swim, all of these tasks made exponentially more difficult by the restraints placed upon him by King. The marks of his captivity are still visible today in the form of glowing, arcane brands on his side.

In the beginning, Izmedu was more or less resigned to his fate. He had been caught, and he saw little point in bemoaning his fate. He would live or die by King’s hand. The other, though, was not content. She was different from him, but similar. She smelled like the abyss. The other was kept somewhere not far from him, but he never attempted to communicate. He was too busy with his trembling limbs and drying tentacles to pay attention to her furious shrieks. One day, though, when his discomfort had faded to an ever present buzz instead of an overwhelming burn, he began to speak to her. Not in the crude language of dragons, but in his true tongue. She stiffened, shocked, but did not reply. It did not matter. He was simply pleased to speak his true language again. Eventually, she began to respond in slow, halting bits of abyssal speech, as if it were not her first language. They grew closer, and a small desire grew in Izmedu’s heart. He wanted his freedom back.

His wish was granted by one almost like himself, in the end. When King was distracted by one of his more interesting projects away from their unguarded prison (the other settled down after they begun to speak, and they were ignored), a skydancer who smelled of death entered their cave. He grinned at them with a smile too wide for his mouth and asked in the tongue of dragons if they wanted to be free. Izmedu’s grasp of the dragon tongue was skittery and garbled, but the other knew how to speak it with ease. She conversed with the skydancer and struck a very beneficial deal with him. The skydancer, Savil, broke their chains with ease, never losing his manic grin. “Come,” he told them, “there is much to be done.”

The three dragons departed from King’s territory, wary of pursuit. Even with the three of them, they were not enough to take on King’s forces head on. Izmedu and the other had to recover from their mistreatment, and Savil needed more allies. He told them that they were the same, victims of King’s mad villainy. He wanted vengeance, justice, and he knew they wanted it, too. Izmedu did not want vengeance. He wanted the cold and the dark in the deep; a return to his home. But, the other was enraptured. She remembered the pain and humiliation that King had given her, and she claimed she would return it twofold. Izmedu looked longingly in the direction of his home, imagining he could smell the sea in the air. He turned from it. The other was ignorant of their ways. She was young and foolish, and he wanted to teach her. To protect her. He chose to stay.

So, the small group of King’s victims grew, and they waited. He taught the other about the sea and their kind, his voice filled with yearning. He gave her a name like theirs when she asked for one: Zavrsna- the end. He hoped, after they were satisfied with their foolish revenge, that he could show Zavrsna his ocean, and they would never see this sorry continent again.
