Midnight The Scribe |
After a delightful conversation with Serasorth, you are directed to the Scribe’s island in order to “further understand the Flyers”. This island is smaller in diameter but significantly deeper than the rest; it lacks most greenery, instead featuring a single large bamboo building with a gentle sloping roof. The only plant life on the island aside from some slightly neglected grass is a moderately sized oak tree, which has a sloped hammock strung from it’s branches to the floor. You enter the building and are met with an absolute mess of books, scrolls, tomes, and quills scattered about, the scent of ink thick in the air. Among the mess you spy a Skydancer, muttering to himself as he jots notes in a book. There are a few candles settled around, casting the room in a warm glow that doesn’t quite fit the rest of the atmosphere.
“Come back later, I’m not in the mood.” The Skydancer calls without looking up; this must be the surly scribe Serasorth described, Midnight. He lived up to his reputation at least. |

Origins
|
|
Midnight grew up closer to his father, Onyx, than his mother, Eurydice, whose job was never remotely connected to his own literary tastes. Though Onyx was often off on a courier mission and enjoying his freedom, Midnight never developed the same taste of adventure and prefered to be the scribe for Onyx’s job, scrawling the messages as they were needed. Though Onyx was not a cruel dragon by nature, he was simply not made to be in that clan or family and often left Midnight alone without much thought. Midnight did not begrudge these actions--he was not a social hatchling after all--but he did grow tired of being ignored and eventually left his home clan.
From there, Midnight simply traveled, joining clans that he left soon enough for one reason or another--a scholarly clan too focused on science to enjoy fantasy, a war-hungry clan, one entirely based on flowers that he was allergic to--and eventually contenting himself to a life on the road like his father before him, though he continued to write endlessly in his journals. He traveled aimlessly for as long as he could, but he found that nomadic life wore his soul down more than he could take, and he struggled to manage without a real home. His writing took on darker themes, and he progressively got less and less concerned with his own health as he traveled. By the time he located the Galestorm Flyers, he was skin and bones, hunting perhaps once a week, and having no care for where or who he was; most concerningly was his writing, which had become nonsensical, illegible, and often absent entirely. |
Nantis took him in, slowly coaxing him to eat, sleep, and take care of himself in general, forcing the Skydancer to acknowledge the world in some manner. It was difficult work, as the Skydancer was surly and uncooperative on good days and dead to the world on bad ones. Over the course of several months, Nantis managed to establish a friendship between him and Midnight, eventually drawing the Skydancer back to himself. Midnight quickly becameIt the Flyers’ scribe, recording their adventures in the pages of the novel he carries at his side or recording important documents for his clanmates. He continued to avoid most other dragons, aside from the comforting presence of Nantis and Elspeth when he struggled, and for a time, the patient aura of Orlena.
When the clan moved to the Windswept Plateau, Midnight followed simply for fear of losing his family, though he grumbled about having to pack his entire library and edit all of his lore regarding the clan. However, Midnight understood the bone-deep exhaustion Nantis held, and supported the decision to move, despite his verbal grouching. When it came time to build a new lair, Midnight found himself pleased with the prospect of greater privacy with the Platforms. Once his island was established, he began to take up writing outside, settled in a hammock from dawn til dusk, enjoying the fresh air. He still maintained a social distance from the rest of the clan, preferring to write alone and only rarely emerging for clan meetings and festivals. |

If you were to ask any dragon in the clan, they would describe Midnight in one word: temperamental. Midnight is easily annoyed by dragons who venture into his library when he is working, especially if they are wanting to "socialize" or (even worse) borrow one of his texts. He will snap at the dragons who bother him, both physically and verbally, and does not mince his words for anyone, leading some to question why he stays. Midnight does so because he has a great debt to Nantis, as he was the sole dragon that drew Midnight from his dangerous thoughts during his time as a traveler. Now, he does not leave the camp often for fear of retreating into his old habits; he promised Nantis he would never go there again and he fully intends to keep that promise. When he does struggle to recall his self care routines, it is always Nantis who forcibly reminds him, often bringing him food and a stern lecture to ensure Midnight isn’t wasting away among his books. The two are the closest of friends, Nantis being one of the few to find the softer side of the scribe.

January 4
I left Inksplash’s Clan. They seemed dignified and welcoming at first, but soon proved no different compared to the previous “scholarly” Clans I’ve met. Stuck up and obnoxious. Always the same. I think I’m going to try traveling a bit further this time. If Father were here, he’d tell me the same thing.
January 6
I’m traveling at a good pace. I don’t have much of a destination in mind, I’m just really going where the winds are taking me. I hope doing so would make my trip more exciting.
January 10
The winds have carried me down to the Sea of a Thousand Currents. The climate here is similar to home - watery and cool. The hunting here is good too, except that the Maren are quite a problem.
January 15
I was raided by thieves, and lost nearly all my belongings. Luckily, I managed to save my journal, pens, ink and the most amount of food I could. I think it’s time to leave the Sea.
January 17
Now I am at the Tangled Wood. I can’t say this place is great, with threats of raiders looming in every corner. I can’t really hunt in the darkness, and my food stores are running low.
January 23
My food stores are dangerously low now. I’m saving the last bits for emergencies. I’ve left the Tangled Wood and am now at the Sunbeam Ruins.
January 30
The Sunbeam Ruins is better, but not much. It’s too bright compared to the darkness of the Wood. There are a lot of BeastClans here, too.
February 3
Was deciding to travel aimlessly a good idea? I’m not prepared for all the dangers I have faced and am going to face.
February 9
I can barely hunt anymore. All Clans I’ve met don’t care about me. I don’t think…
February 16
I don’t feel well. I think I’m sick. Was it really a good idea to travel like this?
February 24
It’s been more than a month. I don’t think I can keep going. Is one step off the cliff a good way to escape it all?
February 28
I’ve reached the Shifting Expanse. The desert. How worse can this be?
March 4
It’s been two months. I don’t think I can keep going anymore.
June 1
I remember. I remember it all. Who I am. What I was supposed to do. I can remember.
I’m in a new Clan now, a Clan that decided to take me in. I hope my writing skills can be of use to them. They are very nice dragons, and I wish to stay with them.
