Monarch The Scavenger |
After a somewhat stilted conversation with Iolite, you follow the messenger towards the docking point for the Platforms. To the immediate right is an island with a brightly colored bamboo pavilion on the far end. There are beautiful banners of rich reds, vibrant oranges, and the occasional splash of yellow hanging from the roof line on three of the sides, allowing you to see the multitude of shelves and boxes containing a wide assortment of trinkets. A Wildclaw is sorting through one of these boxes, though much of her focus seems to be spent trying to keep a wiley kamaitachi from stealing everything in sight. You have to weave through mounds of more random materials to greet the Wildclaw, who looks up at your approach.
“Ah! Hello there! I’m Monarch, the scavenger, and this here is Lief. Lief? Where’d you go? No! Put that down! It’s not yours!” No sooner had Monarch introduced herself, she had to run off, desperately chasing down the kamaitachi who had managed to grab a wrench before bolting away. |

Origins
|
|
Monarch had what most would call an unfortunate rearing, though she simply prefers to think of it as an adventure that fueled her need for even more adventure. As a hatchling, she was a studious member of the Light flight, interested in books and the knowledge accumulated over the years--as most Light dragons were. Overtime, Monarch found herself losing her taste for research, instead traveling into the lands to collect items for others’ research--a mutual relationship that worked quite well. When Monarch was just reaching adulthood, her clan was approached by one of the Lightning flight’s, the latter searching for test subjects in order to conduct research on flightlessness and possible reversal. Monarch volunteered herself as a test subject as she saw the opportunity as a chance for a grand adventure, despite the risks involved.
She followed the Lightning clan to their home, where she was surgically rendered flightless in order to test the machine they were developing, as it had been designed to give a flightless dragon flight and therefore needed to be tested on such a dragon. However, the machine was flawed and failed, as it had been originally designed for a Snapper’s body shape and was not fit for the Wildclaw’s more slender proportions. Monarch was unfortunately left flightless for the rest of her life. Her wings were too tender to attempt flight, and would never heal properly according to their medic. Though hurt by the lack of forethought from the scientists, Monarch held no ill will towards them and instead chose to move on. |
Monarch left the Lightning clan, but continued to live in and explore the Shifting Expanse rather than return to her birth clan. Eventually, she quite literally ran into the Galestorm Flyers--she had been scavenging in the sands for some wires when she ran face first into Nantis as he was walking their borders in the early days of the clan. Delighted to find another dragon in her adventure, Monarch and Nantis got into a long talk which resulted in Monarch joining the Flyers. She quickly took up position as a scavenger, allowing her to continue the adventure she found so delightful while finding materials that would assist the clan in its work.
Eventually, word reached Monarch of a potential move to the Windswept Plateau, to which Monarch responded with delight. She supported Nantis’ efforts to find a more peaceful and inclusive home for the Flyers, and would welcome the wide open plains to explore in her work. However, considering most Wind flight lairs were in the sky, Monarch worried about her own residence within the clan--she wasn’t fond of living exclusively away from the main lair. It was soon established that there would be an easy method for her to enter and exit the Platforms as she liked, built through a combination of magic and mechanics as the Flyers had always used. With that comfort in mind, Monarch was more than happy to follow the Flyers to the Windswept Plateau, where she resumed her work as a scavenger. Presently, she spends much of her time gathering spare parts from abandoned airships, alongside the usual trinkets she collects. |

Monarch is an oddity of a dragon to most, though she has managed to forge strong friendships despite her strange quirks and long adventures away from the clan. Similar to a spiral, Monarch often has bouts of endless energy followed by exhaustion, which serves her well on scavenging runs. Monarch will often be out on missions for days on end with only brief naps before returning home with full bags and apparent exhaustion.
It also allows her to keep up with Lief, her sickle kamaitachi, who has equal if not greater amounts of energy that he uses to get up to mischief. Though Lief will occasionally help Monarch dig up or locate various artifacts while scavenging, more often he attempts to steal the trinkets they retrieve while she is sorting through their haul. If there is one creature in her life Monarch truly could not live happily without, it would be Lief, obnoxious habits and all. |
