Theme Song: King and Lionheart by Of Monsters and Men
You only get a fraction of the way into a conversation with Eretham before the door to the cottage swings open once more. This time, it is a Nocturne dragon that steps out, carefully following what appears to be a mechanical black dragon the size of a small dog. The robotic dragon pauses at the stairs, glancing up at the Nocturne before guiding him down the stairs by an… electric rope? Only then do you notice the Nocturne’s eyes are obscured by thick red fabric, blending in with his red scales so well it seemed part of him at first. The Nocturne follows the mechanical dragon through the “garden”, avoiding the various pinwheels and knick knacks before coming to stand beside Eretham, who casually throws one wing over the back of the Nocturne.
“Hello there, sorry I couldn’t come and greet you. I was tangled.” “Sometimes I think you are more Spiral than Nocturne,” Eretham says with an amused smirk before turning back to you, “I’d like you to meet Themis, my husband and retainer. And most of my impulse control.” |

Themis can claim he is one of the few dragons that was born in and still resides in the Galestorm Flyers. He came from a stray Nocturne egg, discovered during Night of the Nocturne by Monarch and was kept in magical incubation for some months before hatching. The magic was set to keep the egg from hatching until Novlas Dies, or the yearly festival of the Day of New Wings. The first of its kind, this festival was created to honor the clan’s prosperity and promise continued growth, though there was no precedent when it came to how the egg was handled beforehand. The mage Serezha placed magical barriers around the egg to keep the environment from affecting it, though there was a flaw that no one had seen.
When Themis did hatch on Novlas Dies, he was found to be totally blind and rightfully terrified. Try as they might, no healer could mend his eyes, nor find the true cause of this blindness. Rumors began to float around the clan, questions circling of who or what caused the blindness. Some suspected Serezha of ill-doing when he set up the magical barriers, an accusation that did not bother the mage but did, in fact, bother his temperamental mate, Hellrise. Hellrise promptly forced the various scholars of the clan to determine the true cause of Themis’ blindness, convinced Serezha did no wrong. It was of no particular surprise when it was discovered it was the Dark Queen who took Themis’ sight; her magic had seeped out from a faulty rune in the wards, “contaminating” the young hatchling and causing permanent blindness. |
Themis himself was not all that bothered by his lack of sight after some adjustment, and simply took to enjoying his time with another young hatchling--and future prince--while remaining under supervision of the King and Queen. It was evident to Nantis and Elspeth that their son, Eretham, had taken quite a liking to Themis, and the vica versa. As they grew, Eretham became closer to Themis and took up the role of guiding the blind dragon around unfamiliar land or up stairs: he tended to trip and fall on the fickle steps. Themis soon became Eretham's retainer, though admittedly in a more diplomatic sense than for fighting and defense. While Themis works to improve Eretham's diplomatic skills, Eretham teaches Themis the finer points of life, ranging from how things look to how to fight, though admittedly without much success. As their work relation grew, so did a romantic one, and soon enough Themis and Eretham became mates.
When it came time for the Flyers to move to the Windswept Plateau, Themis found himself looking forward to having the winds bring the scents of the world to him; he had always found the noise of the Shifting Expanse and monotony of texture to be lackluster. With lessened diplomatic responsibilities, he and Eretham began to develop their own hobbies outside of royal life. Themis will often take long walks to collect various trinkets of interesting textures, sounds, or smells and bring them to his “garden”, which he will wander through when he is not with Eretham. |

True to his role as diplomatic retainer to Prince Eretham, Themis is a typically level headed and polite dragon. He always addresses his ranking superiors with a polite bow and their proper title, especially when it comes to Queen Elspeth and King Nantis. Among large groups, Themis tends to be reserved and shy, withdrawing to Eretham's side and making nary a sound, functioning more as back up to Eretham than any real leader. This is mostly because the blind nocturne finds the noise and commotion of a crowd rather overwhelming for his remaining senses, and he prefers to stick to the one familiar presence. When the land around him is quieter, Themis becomes more amicable and outspoken, cracking small, elegantly worded jokes with ease as he guides Eretham through the niceties of diplomacy. In return, Eretham acts as a guide for Themis, as his hearing and general spatial awareness have not taken over the role of his lost sight entirely, though Themis has also been known to use a mechanical dragon to help guide him.
