Eventually, you leave the sparkling watery island of the lake monsters, fluttering to a nearby island. It’s fairly large and multileveled, about a third of the island set at the base of a steep cliff. You land on the upper portion, facing a large marble structure with a variety of colorful banners pinned to the walls, all fluttering in the wind. The building has tall white pillars at the front, an arched doorway set a few feet back; the entire thing almost resembles a colorful coliseum. As you go to enter the building, a Wildclaw emerges, body tense as if for a fight. He wears brilliant golden armor, the black banner flowing out from his shoulder in a rather regal manner. He stares directly at you, not startled in the slightest, a sneer on his face.
“I don’t know why you are here but I would prefer if you weren’t,”” The wildclaw growls firmly, shifting to block the door from your sight, “I am Helios and this is my island, I would appreciate if you left. Now.”

Born in the Windswept Plateau, Helios was a classic Wildclaw from the start. Bold, brash, and fiercely competitive, Helios spent most of his time training to become a warrior. It was of no surprise that, before he was even truly an adult dragon, Helios challenged another Wildclaw to a duel over a petty argument. Though Helios was minorly talented in battle, his young age and small stature at the time led to his defeat by the older Wildclaw’s claws. Fortunately, the victor was content to spare Helios’ life, though it would cost him his freedom. From that point forward, Helios was an indentured servant to the noble-blooded warrior who had defeated him.

The next few years were a humbling and eye-opening experience for Helios. He was treated as less, talked down to and ordered freely. He had no worldly possessions, felt so sense of self, only living to serve. When a beautiful Wildclaw warrior known as Naliya arrived at the noble manor, Helios was smitten. Though the two rarely got to truly speak with each other, passing glances and shared moments of time slowly built a relationship between them. Helios, disgraced warrior and serving Wildclaw, and Naliya, powerful gladiator and honored guest, together in romance. Their stolen moments together were always brief, laced with a fear of being caught and, for Helios, punished for slacking on work, but they were everything to them. They began to plan an escape for Helios, dishonorable as it would be. They wanted to be free together. Fate, unfortunately, had other plans.
Naliya was known to frequent dangerous places, so it was no great surprise that she had left in the night for one such adventure. The surprise came when she did not come back, and magnified when a scout returned with her body. Helios was devastated, pained by the loss of his love, his hope, and his heart. Bitter anger grew in him, rage over his helplessness, fury at the royals who sat on gilded thrones while Naliya bleed out, guilt over his own inaction. Eventually, he grew tired of the situation and broke out, following the plans he and his beloved had made before.

Helios traveled for some time before arriving in the Shifting Expanse, exhausted, angry, and clinging to a golden helmet he had claimed as his own. He stumbled upon the Galestorm Flyers and, after some careful persuading from the non-royal clanmates, elected to stay with the clan until he had his feet under him. Still, Helios found himself wandering into the desert frequently, strangely comforted by the empty air. Soon enough, he discovered the air wasn’t so empty, and the ghost of Naliya was by his side near constantly. When Naliya finally gained enough power to take on a physical form, Helios found himself relieved and comforted, enough so to take on a job as the hoard guard for the Galestorm Flyers, despite his dislike of their leaders’ lineage. When word first arrived of the clan’s pending move, Helios frankly did not believe it. Only when the hoard was packed for the move did the Wildclaw reluctantly admit to the move, though displeased at the concept of returning to his birth home. Eventually, with Naliya’s calming presence, Helios settled in their new home in the Plateaus.

Helios is nothing if not stubborn. Hard-headed in the classic Wildclaw manner, Helios has strong opinions that he does not hesitate to share by either word or action. When he forms an opinion, it often sticks, unchanging and unbending to most logic--Naliya can sometimes sway his stance. The most noticeable of these opinions is that of royalty, specifically his hatred of it. Stemming from his time as a royal indentured servant, Helios detests the focus on higher classes most royals show, though this has somewhat lessened as Nantis has made himself amiable to the feisty Wildclaw. On the other hand, Helios is traumatized in a manner of speaking. Though his time as an indentured servant was not unusually cruel, the spite thrown at him and lack of personal possessions has made it so Helios clings to worldly things even more. This trait translates well into his work, though some find him overly possessive to the point of mania. Helios ignores this, clings to things despite these statements, hoping they would not be taken from him.
Helios is not entirely made of aggression. With those on the lower end of the food chain, Helios is protective, honorable, and caring in a sense. He stands tall for their beliefs and needs, calls for reparations on those who try to harm them, and refuses to be cowed into submission again. Helios has a sense of honor, skewed from the original Wildclaw code but there nonetheless.

There is one dragon that sees all of this with ease, not needing to fight through layers of protection to find the softer side of him. Naliya, his one true love. Despite her being a ghost, Helios has always found a comfort in her quiet yet strong demeanor. Knowing that Naliya is no tender skinned dragon brings peace to him, a reassurance that, despite her death, Naliya can still take care of herself. He loves her for her strength, for her persistence and insistence on good in the world, on finding the light that he cannot always see. And he loves her for her love of him. She does not speak soft words of love, but rather shows it in her actions. She stands beside him, follows him wherever he may need her, and has never asked for more than he can give. She lets Helios cling to her, keep her love as something of his that no one can take, that will never leave. Helios is Naliya’s light, and Naliya is Helios’ rock.
