Guardian of the Hearth, Mother of Bees

Why would a water dragon uproot themselves from the ocean and try to create an agrarian society in the middle of the Emberglow Hearth? It's pretty simple. As a Guardian without anything to guard, Mellona set out to find her charge. With no experience with intense heat, she ended up half starved in the middle of the Ashfall Waste with not a single clue as to her mission in life. That's when Bellus came in. Bellus was on his journey as well, but he had only just set out to find his charge. His charge just so happened to be Mellona. She was flattered, of course, but her fated charge still felt so far away. Together, the tow of them set out to find Mellona's charge. Her search led her right to the border of Water territory. The territory was rich and fertile, the soil was mixed with volcanic ash and there was a constant supply of fresh water. Unlike the rest of the Wastes, this borderland bloomed with life. Mellona set her eyes upon the crops and knew at once she had found her charge. She and Bellus set up their tents and began to carve out farmland. Over time, new people joined their small clan and together they worked to create an oasis of life. Thus, the clan of milk and honey was formed. Today, Bellus and Mellona lead the clan, despite what many dragons think, Mellona and Bellus are not married, and neither of them have any particular romantic interest in the other. Mellona is Bellus' charge, not his mate, and the both of them tend to prefer dragons of a similar gender, anyways. Together they focus on growing all sorts of plants, as well as producing honey, fishing on the edge of the Waste, and tend to a small frock of sheep and chickens. Their clan is diverse and welcoming, but lacked any sort of governing structure. Once Ceorl joined their clan, she set about creating a system of government. Mellona is still the Matriarch of the clan, but now that title is a bit more official, and Bellus is her official second in command. As more and more dragons have begun to settle down in their tiny clan, Mellona has even managed to find love in a small and energetic Spiral from the Light flight. Mellona's clan is a group of farmers, scholars, dreamers, and artists, but it is not a clan of fighters. This has resulted in many raids by Maren and Harpy Beastclans that live in the area. Luckily, two fighters have joined the clan, and along with Bellus they help defend the clan. The clan ambassador, Ceorl, has also helped ease tensions with the local Beastclans. These days, the Maren clans tolerate their fishing and aquaponics experiments, in exchange the Clan of Milk and Honey discourages over fishing and represents the Maren in any territorial disputes with dragons. The Harpies respect this arrangement and mostly leave the clan alone, though recently the more artistic dragons have begun to collaborate with the Harpies, which has led to friendlier relations and even some trade alliances. The clan's prolific food output and small size helps facilitate trade with the Beastclans and with several other dragon clans. Many clans in the Flamecaller's domain receive food from Mellona's clan, as well as clans living as far as the Shifting Expanse and Scarred Wastelands. So far, territorial disputes have been few. Most other Fire clans stay well away from the water border, but as many now see, this piece of land holds lush natural resources. It remains to be seen whether Mellona and her clan will be able to keep hold of their territory without bloodshed. |
