She has seen your death. She has seen her own death. She has seen the deaths of every person she has ever met, herself, her mate, her own children. Death comes for them all. All she wants to do is help them, save them, give them a little bit of happiness before they die. For some reason, she hasn't yet died. She's been waiting for her death since the moment she was born. For she wasn't born into life, but born into her first vision. The vision of her death. Then she saw her mother's death, her father's death, and the death of everyone in her clan. She fled as soon as she could. A hermit, wandering the Scarred Wasteland, fleeing at the scent of any strangers. A single mirror separated from its clan is an easy target. But she survives.

She is so tired. The visions come and will not stop. For now, she will remain here. There is food and kind people. Oh, she knows, soon they will die, as everyone does. For now, though, there is peace. Fire is very different from Plague. There are less fights, less battles, and of course, less death. She and the other seers of the clan have formed a companionship, which is a foreign feeling to someone so used to solitude, but she enjoys it. With the arrival of Cascia, Laplace's world has been rattled beyond recognition, for she cannot see this creature's death. The other seers know that Cascia is no dragon, but they sense to malicious intent, so he has been hesitantly accepted into their guild, though Laplace still stays well away from him. When the darkest moon rises over the land, the five seers descend into Somnus Cave to predict the future. All Laplace hears in that dark cavern is the bloodcurdling scream that resides in the center of this planet, a scream that has sounded from the beginning of the First Age. The shriek rings in her ears for days afterwards, but she knows not what it is trying to say to her. All she knows is that she is afraid. Afraid for herself, and afraid for the clan that is her home.

She saw their deaths, but she could not stop them. She saw Nenkal and Chidagni choked by the very plants they tended, she saw Sancus and Strenua burned alive by the fire, and Benedict killed in battle. She saw it all, but she could not stop it. One of the clan's own seers was taken, kidnapped by raiding Plague clan. She knew of the deaths, but how was she to know they would come so soon and so suddenly? She can see the deaths, but she can't see the when or the where. Still, she can't help but blame herself. All the seers blame themselves. After all, wasn't it their job to predict the future of the clan and steer them away from danger? What use are their powers if they can't help the people they love?

A letter from her daughter, Sybil:

Dear Mama,

I hope this letter makes it to you. I've never sent one before, and I wasn't sure the webwing would be able to find you, but if your reading this, then that means everything has gone well with the delivery. Someday maybe my clan will have a courier, but until then we depend on familiars.

Sorry that I wasn't able to write to you sooner. Things have been so busy, settling into my new clan that I didn't even notice how fast time was going by. I'm really enjoying my new home in Clan Yonder. At first I found it strange, and so cold and windy compared to the shifting expanse, but it didn't take long to get used to it.

There are lots of really nice dragons here. Everyone here is so friendly! I've made friends with two of our leader's kids. Their names are Ripley and Tonks, and they were the ones who found me and invited me into their clan. They are very fun to hang out with and we go on lots of fun adventures together! (Don't worry, we haven't gotten in trouble too much). The fourth dragon in our group of friends is a nocturne named Remus, and Mama, he's so strong! He's shade touched, but he's learned to control it, so it only gets out of hand on the night of the full moon. Don't tell anyone I told you about his condition, he made me promise not to tell, but I just had to tell you because I know a lot of dragons can't gain control like that and I'm really proud of him. Do you know much about shade touched dragons? I don't, but I know it's bad.

Recently, another dragon has joined the clan and his name is Zohar. He's learning to be a sorcerer, and he's working very hard at it! Personally, I think his mentor, Shadow, isn't doing enough for him, but he is very determined to learn, even though he's having a lot of trouble. He's my friend too. I've told him that he's made a lot of progress, and that one day all his hard work will pay off. I think that makes him happy. I've noticed he sometimes gets discouraged, especially after a training session with Shadow. Mama, I think I'm in love with Zohar. How do you know if your in love?

My clan has also had our first death. It was just a hatchling, and it was horrible. He was killed by his biological father. Our queen, Fenn, is heartbroken. It was her child. I'm glad you weren't here, because I know how much it would have upset you. I knew from the start. His clock had a lot less time on it than his brothers. So I made sure that he had a very good life, though it was short. I played with him a lot, and brought him new toys to play with. I think he was happy.

How are you doing these days? And how is dad? Have my brother's found the homes they've been looking for yet? I miss you all. My friends here are great, and they do help relieve the homesickness, but I still miss you.

Sorry if I've rambled too much. I was just so excited to speak to you again! I should get going. Ripley just came up with a great new idea on how to prank Shadow. It's funny to see him get angry and he deserves it. Tell dad I said hi, and my brothers too, if they are still with you.
