Arcane ripples of pure energy glittered and sparkled in the night sky like a glimpse into the galaxies beyond. Swirling, oscillating, crackling with magic that most dragons can only dream and wonder about. It was a tear; a rip into reality; a plane between planes where an identical one was hidden away in a strange star far, far from there.

Many dragons did not know the existence of the magical rift tucked away. It was a closely guarded secret between the few that used it for travel; spoken in hushed tones and whispers and shared only among one clan that claimed guardianship over it and the floating island connected to it.
The secrecy of the rift was only one line of defence among many the clan had set up to ensure protection of it – and of the clan’s true home. Left alone; the rift certainly would grow unstable, the raw energies that governed it twisting and eating itself until it was nothing but a faded spark in the atmosphere.

No, this is why it needed to be guarded, to be watched over. A glorious Imperial thought to be many eons in age circled the area daily, ensuring each ley-line was in check. It was a delicate balance, and a duty that has spanned as long as she was old, but a sacred one nonetheless.

The guardianship was not to be taken lightly. Lesser dragons trying to tackle the magic itself could quickly find themselves overwhelmed by the magnitude of it’s power. There would be those that would seek to harness it for their own deeds. But regardless if intentions were pure or not; Saiph took an oath to not let anyone outside of the clan use or know of the rift.

Neverland was thought to be a dream come true. Separated from the rest of the world and saw as only a star in the sky; it was a peaceful utopia where it was undisturbed by the warring factions of beastclan and flights alike. It was a home to the dragons, a get-away from the knowledge that the Shade creeped against the world.

When the earthen merchants finish their rounds of trading and bartering; they can find themselves spirited away using the rift to their hearth, a place they could relax with the knowledge they were safe, secure, and protected by the leaders of their clan.

There had been some that had attempted to find the location of Neverland – and even fewer that knew that it existed. One brave soul might have tried following the merchant discreetly; but they all come up against Saiph, the eternal guardian.

She was not a cruel dragon, she had seen the rise and fall of civilizations and many of the dragons that have tried to discover the mysteries were but hatchlings in comparison. Most were turned away with a stern warning and a simple spell of forgetfulness. Others had to be taken down with a fight.

Such as the Beastclans that had strayed too close to the location of the rift and met their match with Saiph. Raptorik oracles and diviners could sense there was something, some energy existing behind the veil – but all met the Imperial that would show them that they should not go looking where it was not invited.

Saiph worked daily to ensure the rift was stable for the dragons of her clan to voyage through it safely. Every spike of energy, every blip, she monitored with an expert eye and a dedication many admired.

After her patrol of the area, she returned to the heart of the rift, letting her claws drag along the shimmering, shifting surface, watching tendrils of phantasmal energy curl around them. A little bit of her magic flowed, like ink in water, to stabilize the warring energy. Furious pinks and warring purples muted and dilated into a soft shade, like the shepherd’s delight of a sunset.

A gentle sigh pushed between her lips, gaze scanning over it once more. With so much power in one place; it thrummed with a certain aliveness that could only be experienced than seen.

Though many dragons saw it as simply a gateway to Neverland, there was something more to it that Saiph could see. A source of power, a unique oddity of natural magic formed. She did not like to think what would happen if it fell into the wrong hands and their home island invaded by dragons looking to expand and capture territory or squabbling beastclans.

It was that night that it happened. A pack of raptorik warriors and their oracle straying too close to finding the location of the rift. Saiph watched them carefully under the cover of darkness, waiting to see if they were searching for simply passing by. But she could see it. They were looking for something; a something that should not be known.

She let out a bellowing, mighty roar; startling the group into stilling and not moving any further. They saw her leathery wings and serpentine body before her face, barrelling through and buffeting them back, keeping herself aloft and standing vigilant. It was one against many, but Saiph was not a force to be trifled with.

There was hesitation in the group. Knuckles whitened as they gripped their staves, the clacks of uncertain beaks chittering against one another. She stared them down, as if inviting them to make their next move. She did not like to resort to violence; but if the safety of her clan, of her home was threatened, she would do everything it took. A stream of smoke trailed from her nostrils; a snort flaring them and briefly showing them that she was ready to fight if needs be.

In their strange bird-like language; it was the oracle that called first; warbling and shrieking, pointing it’s staff forward towards her, the many beads and jewels adorning it clattering in the cacophony of rallying cries.

The warriors advanced, with Saiph rearing her head back and circling her body around to swipe the frontline with an aggressive flick of her tail. Their arrows and swords found no purchase to pierce her scales; as she had already called upon her magic to protect her from them. A swipe here, a bite there, and she had enough.

Crackling arcane energy gathered in her maw, her wings splaying high in the sky and blotting out the light of the stars, leaving only the reflection of her scales and her aura to shine true. Saiph drew in a deep breath before exhaling, splitting the assault in half and driving them back. One unfortunate Raptorik was caught in the breath of arcane; searing the feather and burning pink. The warrior squeaked and squawked; hurriedly retreating back.

“BEGONE.”

The command boomed in the air like rumbling thunder; and with their forces diminished, the scouting party quickly fled. Saiph lingered a little bit longer before easing, making sure to transfigure the landscape around the area they entered in to look different, securing the secret of the rift’s location from the beastclan should they try to mount an assault.

Fights were very unusual; at the very least, but Saiph would do her duty to protect her homeland and her clan.
