Biography

Fear of Magic

MYSTERIOUS | CUNNING | COLD

An egg laid outside the territory of the eleven elemental gods will not hatch: without their magic, soul never knits to body and the embryo inside withers and dies. Without an anchor, the little waiting spark of Mind that might one day have become a person slips away through the cracks in reality. Most are eaten by the pneumavores that lurk in the hungry Void outside, but a few--lucky or clever or both--survive and grow up to become predators themselves. Shade-touched, these lost souls lurk in the dreams and nightmares of dragonkind, feeding on their fears and growing fat.

The largest of them are the greater horrors, dream-beasts without an identity beyond their Names--the specific terror they draw strength from. Most horrors are little more than beasts, unconscious and unaware of the minds around them, though they ably ape the manner and speech of dragons they meet while dreaming. The larger they are, the more they resemble thinking beings, though the veneer of intelligence lies only skin-deep over a terrible animal cunning. Sleeping dragons caught and seduced by a wandering horror might never wake again, trapped beyond saving in their own nightmares--or worse, awaken possessed, without dreams or mind or reasoning of their own.

Very intelligent, scarily so. Due to his nature as a Greater Horror, he's also very cold and calculating, prone to scheme cunning plans to manipulate dragons. But Grimshaw's teaching gave him the tiniest bit of morals that Nightshade requests for dragons to stay in her clan. Besides, he's interested in the Chiroptera Cult's library and some of his denmates, so he isn't in any hurry to leave.
Though emotions are still a difficult concept for him to grasp, he can still feel basic ones, like rage when something doesn't go according to his plans, curiosity towards new knowledge, pride at being the very first Greater Horror of the clan as well as the most knowledgeable on Magic, and a sort of fascination mixed with sadistic pleasure for Kitty, who he loves teasing and annoying.

Origin Story:

Grimshaw was very bored. He had read every book Athena could find for him about magic and the legends of Sornieth. Except for the book on oneiromancy. Don't get him wrong, this book was interesting and Grimshaw wanted to read it; but it gave him a bad feeling. A very bad one. Enough to forget his thirst for magical knowledge. But, ah, the boredom and the curiosity. It was maddening.
So Grimshaw read the book.
And Grimshaw found a spell. A spell to invoke nightmare beasts, Greater Horrors, into the waking world. This spell tasted like trouble, but it was so interesting. Such advanced magic! Grimshaw couldn't not try it. So he looked for a dead egg to use for the spell, and by a stroke of luck, he found an Arcane egg (maybe a sign of the Arcanist? Arcane dragons do love magic after all...).
The spell worked perfectly. And summoned into this world the Fear of Magic, in the form of a young male Spiral.

At first, Grimshaw didn't know what to do. He had done it. He had summoned a Greater Horror. Now what? Should he tell his leader? Should he hide the hatchling? And what about the hatchling itself? What fear did he represent? Would he be a danger for others? But Grimshaw did not get the chance to ponder for long. After all, he wasn't the ony Magic user in the clan, nor the most magic-sensitive. Akantha, Melachini, and more importantly, Nightshade, his leader, arrived quickly on the scene. She looked at Grimshaw impassively.
"What have you done, Grimshaw?
-I just wanted to try this spell. About Greater Horrors. The egg was already dead. I just summoned a Horror and put it in the egg.
-That was foolish, my friend.
-..."
Grimshaw didn't know what to say. He now realised how dangerous his little experiment was. Nightshade was not angry, as she understood Grimshaw's curiosity and she was quick to forgive, but she sounded almost... disappointed. This was worse than anger. He had put the whole clan in danger.
Nightshade turned her attention towards the little Spiral look-alike.
"Can you speak, little one?
-...
-Do you know what you are?
-... Magic.
-Magic? The Fear of Magic, heh? So be it. I shall call you Majick. If you wish so, you can live here with us. You didn't ask to be brought in this world, but now that you have a life of your own, it would not be fair to try and take it from you. You are free to do as you want. Just know that if you try to hurt my family, I will kill you myself.
-..."
The Monstruosity look into Nightshade's eyes and nodded. Satisfied, Nightshade turned back towards Grimshaw.
"You're the one who summoned him. You have to take care of him now. Also, you'll have to explain yourself to the others.
-Yes, Milady."
Grimshaw was relieved. No punishment (though he wasn't too worried because Nightshade had never punished anyone of her family before). And he could keep the Horror. All was well. He just didn't look forward to explaining himself to his denmates...

And this is how the Fear of Magic was summoned then raised by Grimshaw, and found his place in the Chiroptera Cult.
