At first I thought it was just a huge dragon flying above, blocking out some of the stars in the night sky, and so I attempted to return to my work but something kept drawing my gaze back up to that shadow. My eyes started to adjust to the darkness and I saw in shock that there was no draconian outline, or that of any living creature I recognized. The shape blotting out the stars was roiling and reforming and too vast for my mind to take in, and as I continued to stare I began to see new colors amid the black, purples and blues and occasional pinpricks of light that confused me. Were the stars shining through it? No, they were moving...suddenly I understood, the stars were being pulled into the mass of the thing, flung to other parts of the sky or extinguished entirely. I couldn't look away, and gradually I became aware of a cold sensation on my tongue, metallic and sharp and biting and like nothing I had ever tasted. I couldn't move. It was starting to hurt, a freezing in my mouth but I couldn't move and- suddenly, blinding. In the night sky, there in the black oozing mass was one bright, unknowable eye. White or blue with no pupil, impossibly large with shining facets and I wouldn't have called it an eye except that I could feel it looking at me, gazing through me, judging me. Then there were two eyes and with a flash the freezing was back on my tongue and I knew with certainty that it was the taste of eating stars and gods it hurt and then...nothing

I've taken to calling the being by the name Nux. Despite my prayers they do not speak to me or give signs as other gods might, but I've known since that first encounter that they could be nothing but divine. They have appeared to me a few times, always at night and usually when the moon is waning, in the darkest corners of the sky I've caught flashes of strange shapes, a shifting of color that brings to mind primordial ooze. I attempted, the second time, to fly close to them but before I could get anywhere near my ears filled with static and my vision started to fade. My wings became too heavy to lift and I nearly fell into the sea below. Weakness, I was too weak to join them. I know that I am meant to however, that Nux wants me to become strong enough to join them amid the stars, because of the taste. That taste of starstuff has not returned since the first night, which shows that it is not just a result of observing or approaching Nux as the static sound and failing sight are. No, the taste was a gift from the god, sharing with me the sensations they experience. A show of favor. With sacrifice and training, research and prayer, I will join them one day. Nothing matters more.
