༻ Hope ༺ - Existential Angst

He'd been stolen, really. Whisked away from the nest by a den raider, and kept as a pet for his magical abilities. Passed off as an oddity to his spark-aligned clanmates. He was kept as a more volatile, but much, much stronger power generator for a rickety plant. It ended as it always did, with fire and explosions, and He, out of fear of what he done, of himself and of the world, fled.

He ran far and hard, shying away from friendly clans who attempted to welcome him in with open arms, for if he could not trust himself, how would he ever trust them?

His wild feet carried him through dense forests, through plague torn wastelands, his wings carried him over a sea of a thousand current, and over the place of his birth to the edge of the world, where finally, he rest.
--
He found comfort in the ancient redwoods, surrounded by the sound of his soft footfall, and the quiet chattering of fauna. No longer surrounded by a mechanical jungle he could begin to piece himself back together. His hurt was soothed but the tranquility of this hidden world, never had he known the pleasure of lounging, dozing in the summer's dying light utop a boulder or the thrill of pursuing a soft creature through dense underbrush, over hills and through rivers.

It was here he encountered them, a long bodied female with kindly eyes basking on the river rocks, soaking in the midday sun, and three younglings prancing in the shallows directly across him. This being much more interesting, he abandoned his hunt, and took to hunkering down to observe. The younglings, each a different breed squabbled amongst one another while hopping from rock to rock.

One, the must brazen of the three, proudly boasted about his strength, and with a pitiful flap of his wings, attempted to leap to a rock peaking out from too-deep water, slipped and fell into the current below, the long-female surged after, and he, halfway step out from his hiding space to assist. He gave pause as she yanked him out of the water and to the shore, she chastised the youngster, and turned to call the other two back. It was in that moment she froze and regarded Hope.

Deep indigo and fushia met, Hope went rigid in his crouch, unbeknownst to him that he appeared as an apex would, stiff legged and ready to pounce, though he was more concerned with becoming prey himself. With a jolt of bravery, h raised himself to his full height and gave a friendly chirp. The she-coatl gave a terrified screech, herded the three children and bolted into the underbrush, leaving himself and the roar of the river behind.

It was then that Hope, for the first time in his life, realized that water isn't always bottomless, murky or clouded. Sometimes it was clear, reflective and mirrored the face of a monster. For his eyes were dark, his skin gleaming and unnatural, too-dark for this light forest with its warm creatures and beautiful. In that moment all of his fear and anxiousness came crashing down again. He couldn't trust himself, they should not trust him, of course he would hurt them if he got to close, how could he have forgotten what he was? He laid down on the riverbank and regarded himself, angled face, glittering skin and unnatural eyes. He was a horrifying creature, made to do others harm, how could he have thought they'd want him with them, they'd be safer if he kept to himself. He settled down, his forelimbs tucked under his chest, long legs stretched out behind him and rested his chin at the waters edge, lidded gaze further studying this foreign creature. He sighed his discontentment.
