Biography
Bay
The Wayward Merchant
The Wayward Merchant
|
Born on a ship in the middle of The Sea of a Thousand Currents, Bay was always struggling to get by. His family was large and fairly poor, save for the ship that they had built by hand to live atop the sea. Over time Bay learned about rigging aboard ships, how to navigate during the day and the night, how to read maps, and most importantly he learned the value bartering. When your family was as poor as his was you learned to trade things for more valuable things and to keep trading until you get what you need or get something you can sell easily so you can buy the things you do need.
He took great interest in the merchants that would be docked in the ports they frequently sail into. After a long talk with a particularly slick vendor in a port along the edge of the Tangled Wood, he was taken on as an apprentice and thus left his family to their own, unknown fate. It took Bay years of saving money, bartering, and hard work but he finally was able to afford a small ship to call his own. With the open sea in in front of him he set sail, wishing to cure his itch for adventure. He sailed, but he did not find peace in his heart. He did not know what his hear yearned for until he stopped along one of the small islands that dotted the shore of the Tangled Wood. It was there that he found what he was looking for. A beautiful Tundra, sleeping soundly under the shade of a pine tree. He stayed docked on that island for many years, eventually having a family of his own. What he did not know was there was tragedy soon to befall his life. A sickness soon befell most coastal areas of all clans territories. It came suddenly and without warning. Most all of Bay's family became sick. At first it only affected one, but soon after the death of one of his children it spread to the others. By the time he put his unaffected family on his ship, there were only two children left. His wife stayed behind to care for the other. She was the last to become sick, only holding on long enough to know that Bay and two of her children were safely away. Bay fell into a deeply troubling time while they sailed the sea. He became quiet for the first few months on the water. His only surviving daughter, Ember, took over control of the ship when her father tired and had to rest in the decks below. Having to stop for supplies in a large port, Ember brought him a package when she returned from bartering. Unwrapping it Bay found that there was a leather bound journal inside, and for the first time in months he smiled. She had also mentioned that there was a clan that took in wandering souls like themselves and helped them back on their feet and gave them a place to live. After consideration He took to the helm of the ship and set sail for this clan, determined to make a new life for what was left of his family.
Every man lives by exchanging.
