One day some of the gatherers found a box deep in the shadowlands, a box locked with magic and chains. A box buried deep enough that it was obvious it wasn't supposed to be reclaimed.
A small scrap of undesirable paper lay half-buried in the dirt that covered it. They could not read what was written.
Against some of the gatherers' better judgement the box was opened. A small guardian hatchling, coated with a tar-like substance stared up at the gather with big, empty eyes and uttered a single question :
'why?'
Again, against their better judgement the gatherers brought her home with them. They couldn't leave such a small hatchling alone in the Tangled Wood.....could they?
There's something wrong with the guardian.
She doesn't move the right way.
Sometimes it seems she has too many joints, limbs bending in directions they should never be able to. Sometimes it seems she has too few joints - jerky and stiff like a marionette.
Other times she flows like dark water, like deep tar, like....
Dragons have disappeared around her, nothing left but - oiled footprints. Snippets of bone....of scales. Over time she grew.
Keep your Hatchlings away.
Other things have happened.....inexplicable....indescribable...
It might not be her. Or it might be.
There was a reason for that buried box, for that hastily dug hole.
For those chains.
The only thing she has ever uttered is that same question -
'why?'
No answer satisfies her for long.
Why is quite possibly cursed, it's hard to tell due to her one word vocabulary but the way she was found....strongly suggests something like a curse. That and the fact she's always dripping with that strange oily stuff.
It's hard to get a read on this one - her eyes seem lifeless and her reactions are usually severally delayed, doesn't react normally to much either. Doesn't seem to have any sense of pain at all - any cuts she got as a child simply leaked more of the same oily substance that covers her. She is interested in some things, and though it may not seem like she understands much - she does. Will make an effort to communicate if her guardians aren't present to translate - or she might not.
No one is really sure if Why is a guardian at all, so it's unclear if she actually has or ever will have a charge but - she does spend most of her time wandering in the footsteps of Helios and Dfoa. Maybe she has found a charge after all? Why is rarely found alone - the clan has become quite fond of their resident goop child.
