Biography

Tristan had known from the moment he became aware that he had been meant to travel. Perhaps he was not an oracle like those of the Sea, and he had not been born a Guardian, ever in search of their Charge, but the drive was there in his heart. He paced across the tundra, wishing he could see the world, and settling to learn about it instead. Any story, any tale, he devoured like a morning meal, committing each line to memory. The time would come, he always said. The time would come. But when asked by the elders of the clan, he could not pinpoint that which he sought, or that which drove him. It was simply a need to move on.

As he grew, his clan relented and let him leave. He would not be content to stay in the Icefield, and so they would not force him to stay. Away he flew, as far and as long as his wings would take him. He would go and find all the information he craved, every piece of the world that he could know he would learn. The world was his playground, and all the others in it merely shifting pieces in the puzzle he yearned to uncover. And so he went, in search of the eternal and the unchanging.

He could study with the oracles of the Sea now, and discuss the world with the theorists in the Starfall Isles. He could see the inventions of the Shifting Expanse and listen to the philosophers of the Ruins. And the Plateau--he had to admit that he had a fondness for the travelers of the Windswept Plateau, and they had been kind to him, finding him maps and equipment for the paths he might find. They understood the drive to travel, to find a home and know that it might be a transient thing. The oracles had agreed that his destiny was out in the world, and they all concurred that they could not see a clear ending for his journey, but that it seemed to end in sunlight. Ending his journey in the Ruins would not be the worst of his options, and so he took it for a good omen.

It was not for quite some time before he found his way back to the edges of the Starfall Isles, walking through the Strand and listening to the others around him as they spoke. He had been offered a place among the Isles, though not specifically with any one clan as of yet, and he'd been happy to take it up. The scrolls and artifacts among the ruins were more than any dragon could dream of. He could study for the rest of his life and never learn half of all the knowledge they had amassed. It was like a dream come true.

And then he saw her.

She was a beacon of sunlight in the midst of the darkness of the Starwood Strand, neither glaring nor timid, and radiant as if the sun and stars themselves had stepped under her scales. She was not looking at him, rather more past him, but he could see the brilliant gold of her eyes from quite the distance away. Shroud in a rune-inscribed shawl marked with the colors and magic of the Arcanist, she was the perfect blend of magics from the eastern Ruins and the western Isles...and he could not breathe to speak to her. The words would not come.

It was not until he noticed that she could see him that he finally lowered his gaze, skin hot with embarrassment.

But she had not been discouraged by his watching her, and had not been bothered. She came over and joined him, speaking softly of where they were and where she had come from, and had he ever seen the Mirrorlight Promenade at sunset... She was kind and generous, beautiful and sweet, a mother to her clan and a friend all the same. It was all he could do to keep from falling over his own feet when she asked if he needed a clan to call home. She only smiled as he stammered his acceptance.

So many thought them a mismatched pair--her so attentive and calm, and him as scattered and ill-focused. But truth be told, he believed that the Icewarden--Lightweaver--Arcanist, whichever deity was watching over them now, had led him exactly to her side. He could lead her on flights of fancy, half magic and fairy tale, and half legend and history...and she would always lead him home each night, reeling in her wayward ice-born dreamer.

He stayed, and they nested, and raised hatchlings under the starlight of the Isles, and he was content. He learned and wandered and forgot when he was meant to be doing things...but he came home each night, and found himself newly greeted with the same enthusiasm as the days when he had only been to the Observatory and back. Always to the smiles of his hatchlings, to the brilliant gaze of his mate, reflecting as much love as he could only hope reflected in his...

And he was content. Perhaps he would travel again, and he did still wander for knowledge. But he had finally found somewhere he was happy to call home.
