Bellatrix rarely speaks, but she is always listening, equal parts inscrutable and intimidating despite her diminutive size. They say she was born from a fallen star in the Starwood Strand, coming to life out of stardust and wood and lightning under a night sky. They say she yearns to return home, to the embrace of her family, but they will not take her back, so she spends her nights staring up at them, plotting a course through the sky that she will never again trace herself. They say her heart was broken, long ago, and that wound has never healed over—well, nobody can quite agree how old she is, and they dare not ask. Most assume she is the oldest dragon they have ever met.

The truth is that Bellatrix broke her own heart, left her own home, and forged her own path. She was born mortal, is still mortal. Her silence is a way to control herself, to keep in check one of the most powerful magical gifts her parents had ever heard of; each word she speaks aloud is or will be true. She cannot control it, cannot choose to speak as any other dragon might do. Every word, if spoken at all, must be weighed carefully against her knowledge of the world, of other dragons and creatures who inhabit it along with her, taking care not to disrupt the balance of natural order.

She learned that lesson. Painfully. Viscerally. Permanently.

She broke her own heart.

And she refuses to heal it until it is healed on its own.

Without her so-called gift.
