 The pale rays of dawn peeked out over the crest of the horizon, chasing away the dull of night. The clusters of bamboo shoots which dotted the landscape were still shrouded in shadows, not yet fully awake. The Ascent was strangely quiet, save for the steady roar of the river that ran beneath the foot of the cliffs.

And suddenly, in the midst of the stillness, there was movement.

A maize-coloured Ridgeback unfurled herself and stretched out her mossy-green patterned wings, letting out a loud yawn. She was exhuasted, but one could not expect anything else from having stayed up half the night keeping guard. She padded towards the large granite cave behind her, careful to make as little noise as possible as she rolled away the boulder that blocked the entrance. Her chimera companion, who had guarded the cave for the little hours that she had slept, was fast asleep, and she knew he would not appreciate being woken up at the first light of dawn.

The thin ray of light that streamed into the cave was dim, but it was enough for her to do what she had to. Her eyes quickly scanning the contents of the Hoard, she mentally took stock of everything, and was relieved to find that all was as it should be.

Another day, another job well done. She smiled to herself as she slid back out and curled up beside her snoozing familiar to watch the changing colours of the sky as the sun rose.
