Biography
Their had been a huge lair here once. A sprawling network of tunnels, dens, forges, nests, and an assortment of hovels that must've had some purpose in the grand scheme of things. His mother had taken him through one when he was still a small, fur-less thing. He had watched, wide eyed as a swarm of young faes did a poetry reading with weird, stilted consonance and bizarre meter. Their had been a huge city here once.Travelling dragons would use the great arcing spires and ceremonial lightning-rod as landmarks for cross-continent journeys. Travellers came and went, and brought with them a booming trade and prosperity. Dragons who knew the secrets of working metal and glass would hawk their wares while perched upon lampposts, rooftops, or squeezed into any space they could lay their wares. When he was a hatching, he had played among the merchants - rustling blankets and pinching wares out of a youthful mischief more than anything else. |
Their had been a huge kingdom here once. Big enough to have royalty of it's own. The prince he had known had been a reckless, daring young thing. He was known to his populace as The Rider of Storms, and would often go out in terrible weather to impress the ladies of the court, returning with coloured cloths that onlookers would throw up into the winds. He was as kind and warm as his mother, the reining queen, and flourished and grew as his kingdom did. And he had no greater admirer than a young tundra, a hopeless romantic that had fallen head-over-heals for the charismatic prince. He had kept a small blue cloth given out by the prince after a particularly daring retrieval in a wet summer storm. It was his most prized possession. And it would have ended there if it had not been for the sudden illness of the queen. Although she had outlived her mate for many years, the queen's health suddenly took a turn for the worst one summer. While illnesses where not unusual in such a large lair, the symptoms of the queen's illness where peculiar. Her mind and coordination began to degrade as though under the effect of fever, but no temperature was present, nor did any fever remedies work. The royal physicians tried all they could to ease her pain and make her death comfortable and dignified. However, as the weeks went by and she still had not passed away, rumours of a strange and contagious virus spread. Citizens where no longer able to gain an audince with the queen, and her family where receiving daily check-ups. |
By the fall, she was a shadow of her former self - gaunt and matted, and too weak to leave her own chambers. But still as alive and delirious as ever, much to the bewilderment of the court. |
And the prince, in his grief had grown reclusive and sad. He stayed by his mother's side and vowed to never allow this fate to befall another dragon in his kingdom. The first thaw of spring brought to the kingdom a promise- The prince would to personally knight any dragon who could find the cause of the terrible illness that had befallen his mother. This opportunity seemed too good to be true to the love-struck Pikkle - a chance for fame, fortune, and instant invitation to the prince's innermost circle. So he set off on a year-long escapade, visiting remote lairs with a description of the queen's strange illness. He met reclusive hermits and decorated doctors, but no one had ever seen anything like what he described. It wasn't until he met a shaman in the depths of the Viridian Labyrinth that he found a lead. |
Because, in truth, their was no illness that could waste a dragon so quickly, but that lacked the power to kill. However, deep in the Viridian Labyrinth their where rumours of a parasitic bug that would nest in hatchling and elder's ears. The eggs would hatch and burrow unseen into their brain. Because of this, the shaman explained, the dragon could live for years in dementia, depending on the size of the clutch. |
So Pikkle returned to his prince with a light heart and god news for the kingdom. Working with this new information, the royal physicians where able to kill the remaining larva before the grew into adulthood. The Queen's health stabilized and she began to slowly recover motor and speech functions with time, but she would never be the same. The prince continued to spend most of his time with his frail mother, neglecting the ruling of the nation. Pikkle was soon knighted and became well known for his levelheadedness and determination. His knowledge and rationale lead him to become one of the prince's most trusted confidants. His time with the prince was soft and warm - a dream come true. If Pikkle hadn't been so enamoured with the prince, he would have noticed the subtle changes in his childhood crush. When he was once charismatic, joyful, and kind, the prince's grief had started to focus into an anger and bitterness that clouded his judgment. He no longer played amongst his people, but became reclusive - making judgments in his mother's place but treating the duties with scorn and disinterest. It wasn't until the queen finally passed away that the prince was forced to become the king. From that day on, he was no longer able to skirt his duties. |
Most of the populace probably noticed something was wrong about the time that all dragons from the Viridian Labyrinth where forcibly evicted for treason and the death of the late queen. The king insisted that the parasites had been brought to the kingdom by an immigrant or traveller. As a knight, Pikkle was required to help with the evacuate the traitors and arrest the resistors. He told himself that the king was just
It was at this time that the king's strange behaviours finally broke through Pikkle's enamour, and he realized that something was terrible wrong.
