Biography

C O R U S | C O R A
Librarian

I.
Clan Yulon’s library is majestic. A four-story building with sweeping eaves, bordered by lush peonies and tall evergreen hedges, the gray-brick walls cascade with sheets of silvery ivy. A small herd of Celestial Antelope graze on the lawn and keep it trimmed, for the grounds around it are too mighty for one dragon to tend.
Stepping in, you are greeted by cool blasts of air. The scent of rose wafts toward you. The mighty blackwood shelves rear above you, containing rainbows of bound books that stretch on farther than you can see. Marble statues of the Lightweaver and her charges peer down at you, with gazes both appraising and noble, and in the very center bubbles a fountain shaped like a stack of books.

His father Seranus finished reading, then peered down at him above steely spectacles. Corus felt his heart leap.
The library right now looked like none of that. The small shack held a few stacks of books and one beaten red couch.
“Do you think this can happen?”
“I — I — I —“
Seranus waited patiently for his son’s stammer to wear itself out.
Corus gathered himself, tail lashing. “Yes. I believe.”
“Then go to it.”
II.
But going to it was harder than imagined. On the eve of war with the Emperor, every spare resource was requisitioned for battle. Funding for books, for librarians, was steadily leaking out. Corus watched his father Seranus fight, thunder and boom for more money, but often he was shouted down. The only thing that kept the library running in its reduced state was dedication—and the fact that he and his son lived there.
Seranus was developing a cough, too, and he looked defeated.
“You should go into training to be a warrior. That’s all they value.”
“That’s n – n – n – n –“
His father sighed, and Corus bit his tongue.
“That’s not true! They just can’t hear us right now!”
“But after the war?” Seranus chuckled.
“Y – Y – Yes.”
“See to it.”
III.
Seeing to it was harder still.
IV.
The Emperor left Clan Yulon in smoking ruins. Corus had been hidden in a basement beneath the library. When he gathered the courage to emerge after the fighting, he saw nothing but decay and destruction. Dragons wandered through churned dust, wailing and weeping after dead loved ones. And in the former center of the Clan, the leaders were gathering.
Corus crept into the circle, trembling. Now was his moment.
He listened to Kelsus, Maia, Akira, and Hafwen speak as well as they could about the Clan’s future. The Emperor had been routed and driven out. Their scouts were looking at a new area for them to settle: one with rolling hills, acres of forest, running water…
“W – wait!” Corus cried. “Wait!”
Their eyes shifted as one to him. He felt the words struggle and die in his throat.
Kelsus’ brows lifted. “Yes?”
“We — we need a library.”
A ripple of surprise ran through the reduced clan. Enthralled by Kelsus’ speech, Corus hadn’t noticed that the whole of the remaining clan had gathered around, and now a rainbow of eyes were fixed on him.
There in the distance stood his father.
“We need a library,” Corus began again, more strongly. “A bastion dedicated to the bettering of our clan. That way we can spread knowledge among all of us. For what were we fighting for if not freedom and beauty? A library will allow everyone to share in the bounties of knowledge equally.”
They were entranced. He spoke on, long into the night.
V.
Thus, Clan Yulon has a library. The ivy hasn’t taken full root yet, but it’s there, and the Celestial Antelope are more fond of the peonies than the grass. But it’s tall, grand, and dark, bordered by running streams. In autumn, leaves fall and paint the waters gold and red.
There are sculptures of every deity, and the hatchlings frolic among them. The fountain is full of gems and treasure. Each wish goes toward buying new books.
Best of all is the printing press. Corus tends to the library, but also to making journals to encourage Clan Yulon to think, pray, and reflect on their lives. The covers are intricate, detailed, painted in many colors. He makes every design by dipping his claw into wells of colored ink, and carefully drawing it by paw.
He still stutters. The books don't mind.
His father Seranus is getting on in years, but smiles with pride whenever he looks on his son.
