Kelpbeard, Part 1, Volume I
A terrible power.

~

Continued from Dewlap Part 1

The door to Kelpbeard's room was left open.

Rockpools leaned against the wall just outside, and kept going over the questions in his head. He could easily see most that would get Dewlap into trouble.

The answer then came to him. With a smile plastered on his grey face, he marched into his father's room.

The giant Guardian standing in the room returned the grin. “Just the dragon I wanted to see!”

Rocky faltered midstep, but continued his pace. “Missed me already?”

“It's so great to have you back, son,” Kelpbeard's voice softened. “You were incredibly lucky that Dewlap found you again, eh?”

Not the direction he'd wanted the conversation to take so soon. Rocky swallowed his unease. “Dad, there was something I wanted to ask you.”

“Yes of course!” Kelpbeard brought up two chairs and sat in one. It creaked under his weight. “What is it?”

“That's the thing. There was something, but as soon as I came in, I forgot,” he chuckled quietly as he climbed in his seat. “I think it's because I overheard somedrake say...it sounded like they said something like soul searcher, but I couldn't be sure, and I would've stopped to see who it was but I'd—”

Stop.” Kelpbeard was now looking at Rocky intensely. “What did you think they said? Who said it?”

Rocky froze, his heart thumping wildly, but he managed to keep his tone steady. “I don't know...and it sounded like whoever it was said soul searcher. Why? Do you know what that means?”

Kelpbeard's gaze became distant as his eyes wandered from the Mirror. He quickly rose and strode to the door, closing it. “I've never heard the term soul searcher,” he finally found his voice and sat back down, “but perhaps you just misheard. There are some dragons with a terrible power to physically see the souls of living creatures, and leave their victims changed. They're known as soul suckers. I never told you because I wanted to keep you safe from learning about such a thing. It's bad enough that your brother knows.”

Confusion showed on Rocky's face, then he said, “For some reason I don't think you mean Red,” he joked.

The look that Kelpbeard gave silenced him.

Well, for a moment. “You mean Mudflat,” the Mirror murmured.

“It's important for him to know,” Kelpbeard boomed. “He as well as Coral help me keep the clan safe from dragons like...them.”

“But how does one know who's a soul search—sucker and who isn't?”

The grey Guardian shook his massive head. “As far as we know, the only way to tell is to meet their eyes directly, and they yours—”

“And why the word sucker? They don't actually suck out souls, do they?”

“I have not seen such a thing happen, myself,” Kelpbeard admitted, “but dragons who've passed through our clan in the past warn of those who are unlucky enough to have their minds invaded and discover themselves different from before, as if they'd lost themselves. Some have even been known to go insane afterwards.”

The soul isn't meant to be invaded, Dewlap's words echoed in Rocky's brain. Was that what the old Nocturne meant? Has he searched the minds of other dragons and caused them to go mad? Surely he hadn't meant to on purpose, since he'd had the decency to warn Rocky first. But the young Mirror hadn't listened.

Kelpbeard noticed his son's lengthy silence. “I know, it's a lot to take in, eh?” he asked.

Rocky snapped out of his trance. “Well, that certainly was...informative.”

“Definitely not the subject a teacher would like to give during class,” Kelpbeard laughed lightly. “Or a parent to their children,” he added quietly.

Clearing his throat noisily, Rocky got off of his chair. “Shall I not tell a soul?”

“It's best that way.” Kelpbeard lifted his great body from his seat and it squeaked. “We wouldn't want to panic anydrake else.” He went for the door when he turned back to Rocky. “Oh, and uh, try your best to keep it from April especially, or we'll never hear the end of it,” he chuckled, and opened the door.

Their stomachs dropped at the sight of the dragon before them.

“Hi, Mom,” Rocky said cheerily.

Saline didn't buy her son's tone. She stepped in the room and closed the door after her, looking up at her husband. “How could you tell him?”

WhaIhe—” Kelpbeard stammered.

Saline turned to Rocky. “There's nothing to be worried about, son. There aren't any dragons like that in the clan.”

“Of course there aren't, dear,” Kelpbeard started, “Mud and Coral make sure of that.”

“I know,” Saline placed a paw over her forehead. “I just didn't want another of our children knowing about something like that.”

“Well I never intended to tell him, he asked me—”

“What?” Saline interrupted him and turned back to the other Mirror. “Where did you hear about that in the first place?”

Rocky had to back away from his mother's nose as it was threatening to bump his own. He spoke quickly, afraid that she'd interrupt him as well. “I overheard somedrake mention it on my to see Dad, but I didn't stop to see who it was or which room they were in.”

Saline stared at him for a few moments before she let out the breath she'd been holding in. “I see.” Turning her goldenrod head to Kelpbeard, she said, “And what do we say when somedrake else asks?”

“Uh, deny that I know anything?”

Saline took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. “Okay. Speak of this to nodrake,” she instructed them, and both males nodded. “We don't want to cause another panic right after what happened to Rocky.” She went to reach for the door but stopped and craned her neck to look back at them, a small smile escaping her. “Try to keep this from April especially.” With that, she turned the knob and left her husband and son alone.

When she was gone, Kelpbeard and Rocky looked to each other and exchanged crooked smiles and nervous laughter.

“Seriously, don't tell April,” said Kelpbeard, his smile gone.

“Oh I won't,” Rocky reassured him. “Though she has ways of finding out on her own.”

“She certainly does,” the Guardian groaned.

Rocky turned to leave, but turned back around. “Y'know, I finally remembered what it was I'd wanted to ask.”

“Oh? What's that?”

“When was the last time you changed your mind about a drake you originally thought might bring harm?”

Kelpbeard was stunned. “Well, I suppose it was when your mother and I invited Lumiere into the clan.”

“Even though he's an Imperial? And...ancient? Do we even know if there are other, ah, bodies around here?”

“Despite those reasons, it isn't his fault what he and his kind later become, and he offers us information on so many things we may not know.” Eyeing his son, Kelpbeard continued. “Why do you ask?”

“Ohhh just curious.”

Kelpbeard watched his son walk out of the room, leaving the great Guardian to ponder.
