Continued from Alga Part 2

The storm continued its relentless rage. Wind howled across the island, flashes of lightning illuminated sand, sky, and sea as more distant thunder boomed, shaking the air. A lone dragon held his head low as he pushed forward through the wind, towards the stone castle that loomed ahead.

When he reached the main doors, he lifted one paw and pounded on the door thrice. He stood quietly for a few moments as he waited for a response.

The door creaked and groaned as it was being opened, revealing a golden head.

“Rocky!” April exclaimed as she lunged at him, gripping her brother in a tight hug as she pulled him inside and closed the doors behind them.

Rockpools widened his four blue eyes as April squeezed his grey body. Glancing behind her, he could just make out the shocked and worried faces of other dragons gathered in the main foyer. Saline tried blinking back her tears, Mudflat’s expression was unreadable, and Coral seemed to be looking right at him, though he couldn’t quite tell, since her entire face was always covered by her helmet. Redtide was the only one who wasn’t looking at him as he hung his head.

April took a step back. “We were so worried about you and...” she trailed off, hesitant to finish.

“Well, I’m here now,” Rocky said, managing a weak and crooked smile.

Saline galloped up to him. “How did you escape? Where’s Dewlap?” she asked with a hint of a growl in her voice.

“He’s...” Rocky’s voice was quiet when he started, his eyes becoming distant. “He’s gone. He left.”

Saline pressed her side to her son’s, and she thought he’d flinched slightly, but she quickly ignored it. “It’s okay. I’m just so glad you’re safe now. Bogatyr sent out search parties to go after him, though I fear we’ll only lose dragons in this weather.” She led Rocky up the main stairs and April followed them with Red close behind.

Mudflat and Coral watched them until they disappeared down one end of the hall. Mud tilted his brown head to Coral when she spoke behind her golden mask.

“He has to be found,” Coral snarled. “Dewlap—”

“Will pay for what he did to Rocky,” Mud interrupted her.

“And how do you suppose we catch a wizard?” Coral hissed. “Our own magic is nothing compared to his.”

“Then we’ll just have to hope he’ll never show his pathetic face here again.”

...

Rain battered against the glass windows. A solitary flash lit the room. More thunder bellowed.

A sigh escaped the jaws of Rockpools. He’d been staring outside for too long as he’d been lying on the bed. Heaving his body up, his feet tapped the floor silently and he tiptoed for the door.

The knob clicked as it was turned, and the Mirror stiffened when the door groaned as he pushed it open. Poking his hooded head into the hall, he glanced left and right, seeing nodrake else in sight.

He slipped around the door and slowly pushed it closed, clicking it shut. Stepping quietly down the hall, he passed the other rooms on his way back to the stairs. He paused when one door caught his four eyes.

No. He wouldn’t go in there.

Reaching the staircase, he tiptoed down until his feet tapped the bottom. A few torches hung on the walls, lighting the foyer, but he didn’t notice the large golden body standing by the doors until she spoke.

“Oh. Rocky. What are you doing up at this time?” the hoarse voice of Coral wondered.

“Oh! I um, couldn’t sleep,” Rocky said, trying to smile crookedly. “The storm, y’know, it’s loud, isn’t it?”

“Of course.”

“I guess the others aren’t back yet?”

“They may not return for some time. They're still looking for Dewlap. But,” Coral went on, softening her voice, “it’ll be alright. That old fool will no longer be here to search your memories,” she finished, raising one paw and pointed to Rocky.

The grey Mirror saw a small blue spark flash from the tip of Coral’s claw, and a slight prickle rippled through his body, but nothing more happened. He cocked a brow in confusion as Coral’s body began trembling.

“Why didn’t it work?” she whispered, examining her paw.

The four blue eyes of Rockpools widened when he’d heard her. “It was you?” he asked quietly in disbelief.

Coral growled and raised her paw in Rocky’s direction again, but the Mirror lifted one of his own paws and he deflected her shot with a glowing green wall. Coral took a step back.

“How...” she started, but couldn’t finish.

The glowing wall began to slowly dissolve, and behind it, the grey body of a Mirror was replaced with the white and black of a Nocturne. The hood he’d been wearing now transformed into a sagging hat and mantle.

“NO!” Coral screamed. She raised her claws again and fired.

Dewlap cast his shield once more and Coral’s shot ricocheted back to her, striking her helmet and knocking it off of her head as the metal mask clattered to the floor. Dewlap froze when he noticed her face for the very first time.

Coral glared down hard at the old Nocturne, baring her fangs as tears streamed down her golden cheeks from her bloodshot eyes.

“Coral...” Dewlap hesitated to start. “No...it can’t be...”

“Yes,” the Guardian spat, “it was me. I controlled Rocky,” she finished hoarsely, gritting her teeth.

Dewlap seemed lost in thought, trying to make sense of what was happening, until he realized a startling discovery. “That day Rocky was first forced to kill…it was the day you lost Silver...”

Coral stiffened and bristled. “What did you say?” she snarled.

“You woke to discover your Charge missing—”

“Stop it!”

“—and in your anguish you made your own brother kill when you saw him playing with a new friend as you were grieving for the one you lost.”

Coral screamed, raw anger forced from her sore throat as more tears flowed. “You filthy demon! How do you know about Silver?!”

“He...” Dewlap trailed off as his voice shook. Could he really tell her what happened to her Charge? Something told him he shouldn’t, fearing it would only break the she-drake further. But she was already too far gone in her grief. And he also made a promise to Silver. “Coral...he’s gone. His soul is free.”

The golden Guardian stood motionless as her tear-stained face stared down to him. “What?” she whispered.

Dewlap lifted both of his palms, and mist began forming and swirling around each claw as he closed his pale green eyes.

Coral could only watch in bewilderment as a cloud formed in front of her, images first appearing blurred before clearing and revealing a lean grey shape with large aqua eyes wandering away from three sleeping shapes. Her eyes stung once more when she recognized herself and Mud and Alga when they were younger, trying to keep Silver warm. The images shifted. Coral now saw Silver and Lumiere speaking to each other, though she couldn’t hear their words. When she saw Silver shiver once and absolute joy on his face, Coral felt an odd warmth flood her body. She watched him fly through the night, twirling in loops before stopping midflight to head back to the castle...but he stopped again, and instead flew in the opposite direction. Coral widened her sore eyes when she caught sight of a strange green dragon, and Silver looking to the splotchy she-drake with hope in his eyes, and Coral gasped when saw a white misty shape being pulled from the Spiral’s body. Coral couldn’t speak or move when the images kept changing. The next showed Dewlap with that Wildclaw as they were prisoners in the same home belonging to the green dragon. She watched as they broke free and chased the stranger before wandering the forest and reaching the shore. More tears cascaded down Coral’s face when the final image showed a ghostly Spiral leaving Dewlap’s body before drifting up into the sky, a gentle smile on his small and translucent face before he finally vanished, followed by the mist.

No...” Coral whimpered. “It can’t be...” she shut her blue eyes tight, squeezing out more tears.

Coral—”

“YOU’RE A LIAR!” the golden Guardian screamed. She opened her jaws to curse the Nocturne again, but instead of words, Coral threw her head up, howling as she wailed and sobbed.

Please, listen to me—”

Dewlap was suddenly interrupted when he felt something against his back. He froze when the large brown head of Mudflat looked down at him.

You,” the brown Guardian accused him, snarling.

Dewlap said nothing and he sidled away.

“I knew I should’ve finished you off myself when I forced Aerico’s sword through your heart.”

“You...” Dewlap’s voice shook. “Why...”

“Coral needed somedrake to support her when no other dragon did,” Mud explained as he growled. “I am her brother after all. Alga could’ve helped us, as well, if she hadn’t abandoned us the moment Coral needed her sister the most.”

“She went to Lumiere...” Coral’s voice croaked. “That blue monster is responsible for all of this! He should’ve stopped Silver...”

“It’s not Lumiere’s fault, Coral,” Dewlap said quietly, “Silver was led to believe that the green dragon, Marica, would help him. It was she who tricked him.” He thought he saw a white tail out of the corner of one eye, but when he turned his head to look up to the railings, it was already gone. Facing the Guardians again, he asked Mud, “And Pierce? What are you going to do with him?”

“Pierce?” Mud asked, cocking a brow in confusion. “Oh, the other soul sucker,” he added, chuckling deeply. “He’s safe for now. Locked and chained up in our prison until we pay him another visit.”

Dewlap’s paws shook and he frowned. “He doesn’t deserve punishment, he was just scared.”

“Actually, he does. He saw what Vixen was seeing us doing when he searched her mind that night.” Mudflat paused and noticed the perplexed expression on the Nocturne’s face. “Of course she wouldn’t’ve been able to tell anydrake what she saw, and we didn’t need to threaten her to keep quiet, since she already forgets half of everything she knows. But everything changed when that Wildclaw looked through her memories. We needed to capture him after we discovered what he now knows about us.”

“’Threaten her’?” Dewlap echoed, his voice shaking. “But...didn’t you...”

“Love her?” Mudflat scoffed. “My feelings for her never existed. That was just to make sure you wouldn’t think that I had any part in all of this.”

Dewlap balled his fists before spreading his claws, and soft green light glowed in his palms. A deep growl rumbled in his throat.

Mud’s laugh echoed around the room. “What are you going to do?” he dared the Nocturne. “Prove to everydrake that we were behind it all? Who do you think they’re going to believe?”

Dewlap said nothing, and he responded by slumping his shoulders and the light from his paws faded and vanished.

“It was them, Majesties!”

The terrified voice made all three dragons freeze. Turning their heads, both Guardians and Nocturne saw a wild-coloured Pearlcatcher standing between Kelpbeard and Saline at the top of the staircase. The expressions on the king and queen’s faces were that of total disbelief, and the Pearlcatcher’s emerald eyes were round with fear as he pointed a shaking claw down to Coral and Mud.

“It’s true!” the Pearlcatcher, Blake, said. “I saw Coral control Rocky that day before the storm, and Mudflat captured and tortured me!”

Mud seethed. “You little lying—”

“You heard them, didn’t you?” Blake asked Saline and Kelpbeard. “What they said? Even Coral strangled me,” he added, unwrapping the black fabric from around his neck, revealing slightly dented marks all around his neck. “They both threatened me to never tell you or anydrake else and...” he trailed off, his voice cracking as he hugged his pearl.

No dragon could tell if Saline and Kelpbeard were listening to Blake. They could only stare down at their son and daughter in shock, not wanting to believe what had been spoken, but they somehow knew it was the truth.

“Coral...” Saline whispered.

The golden Guardian shook her head, tears dripping from her face. “Mud was the only one there for me. He was the only dragon who supported me.”

“You controlled your own brother—”

“I LOST MY CHARGE!” Coral screamed, her throat raw. “Everydrake made such a big deal about Rocky but never cared about what happened to Silver!” her voice shook with fury and sorrow. “But I’m going to find him.” She suddenly whipped around and burst her way through the heavy wooden and iron doors, spreading her wide wings and bounding into the raging wind. She didn’t look back when she heard her parents and Dewlap scream after her, or when she heard Mud’s beating wings close behind.

Dewlap was certain that the eyes of the other three dragons were now resting on him. When he saw out of the corners of his eyes that they indeed were, he turned his head away.

“Your Majesties,” he began quietly, “I—I’m so sorry. I never intended it to be like this. I never thought that they’d—”

Kelpbeard interrupted him by lifting a grey palm to silence the Nocturne. When he lowered it, it was Saline who spoke.

“Where is Rockpools?” she asked, swallowing the lump in her throat.

As if on queue, a blinding flash appeared down in the foyer where Dewlap stood, and he lifted his arm to shield his eyes. When he lowered it, the serpentine body of a blue Imperial, a brilliant yellow and green Guardian, and grey Mirror now stood by him.

Rocky turned his hooded head to look at Dewlap, his four blue eyes wide. “You came back?”

Dewlap tilted his head to acknowledge the young Mirror, but didn’t meet his eyes as he allowed a small smile. “Cursed dragons,” he said quietly.

“Oh c’mere,” Rocky said, grinning and spreading his arms wide as he reached for Dewlap.

Don't—” Dewlap tried to back away, widening his pale eyes in horror. He was too late as Rocky gripped the old dragon’s body in a tight hug. Dewlap sighed and he furrowed his brows, though he didn’t try to break free.

“I think Rocky’s got the right idea,” Lumiere whispered to Alga, his blue grin stretching, his white brows wiggling.

“It’s not time!” Alga whispered back.

Kelpbeard cleared his throat noisily, and every dragons’ attention now rested on him.

Lumiere’s yellow eyes drifted from the grey Guardian back down to Dewlap and Rocky. “I think we have some explaining to do,” he said helpfully.

Continued from Marica Part 2

Once all the other dragons had been brought back by Lumiere with a single snap of his claws, they rejoiced and rushed to their friends, partners and families. Ophelia had tears stream down her face as she embraced, Pigeon, Twig and Alyss. Moonrise and Lillith hugged Calypso and Phorcys tight. Prosper quickly soothed Amity's wails. And Newt darted up to the big blue Imperial, waving his paws in wild gestures, his silvery eyes frantic.

“Newton!” Lumiere greeted the young Spiral with a big grin. “I'll bet you have more stories to tell me!”

“Marica was here,” Dewlap said, lashing his tail in irritation.

Lumiere paused for a brief moment before chuckling. “That's preposterous! There's no way she could've escaped my—”

But he was soon silenced by every Spiral there. Marica had been here, they all exclaimed. With shrill voices, they explained of how Dewlap was almost taken by the witch and trying to save them, and how Sylvester broke Marica's deal with Dewlap by sacrificing himself and nearly dying. Then they pointed with shaking claws to the large dragon-shaped wooden statue that sat before them.

“I wasn't scared o' nothin'!” Aerico insisted, closing his eyes tight and slashing is sword wildly. “HYAH! HA! WAPOW—” he stopped when his blade struck the statue, opening his crimson eyes wide and yelping, darting behind Astraeus, who rolled his eyes.

“Then it appears you all handled it very well without me,” Lumiere said, shrugging and smiling again.

Alga stopped him with a look. When she heard sniffling, she turned to see her sister Coral with tears spilling down her face as her parents attempted to comfort her and ask where Mudflat was.

Coral, her blue eyes sore from crying, then looked over to where the pile of ashes and armour rested. Kelpbeard and Saline followed her gaze, and their breaths caught in their chests.

Coral, her voice hoarse, explained everything. That, after she and Mud flew away from their home just last year, Coral had still wept for losing Silver, but Mud's mind had turned twisted. He had become Glaw, stealing the souls of many dragons, living each memory in attempts to forget his own.

But, in the end, he had been struck down by Marica as she'd escaped her prison.

Queen Saline's eyes stung, but she quickly looked away before any tears had the chance to fall. King Kelpbeard moved closer to her, and she peered up into his eyes, her own filled with sorrow.

Mudflat...their own son...he couldn't have done this...he couldn't be gone...

But deep down, they both knew Coral had spoke the truth.

Kelpbeard nudged Saline closer and nuzzled her gently. Redtide cast furious glares to Coral and moved to stand between her and Rockpools. Rocky only stared to Coral and stood frozen in place. Coral, his eldest sister...the dragon who controlled him years ago after she lost Silver...her Charge.

“Isn't this a wonderful family reunion?” Lumiere said with a grin, ignoring Alga's scornful look. “But,” he added, his smile softening, “I think we're missing somedrake...”

...

Alga and Lumiere both agreed that it was to be Alga who would call Silver. And soon, the ghostly form of a Spiral slowly twisted into view.

Silver beamed up at Alga, and the yellow-and-green Guardian returned his gesture with a sad smile. When she stepped aside, Silver looked past her, his eyes widening with disbelief.

Standing next to Lumiere, pale and hanging her head and wings, was Coral. Her once-bright wings hung low and her eyes were sunken. When she lifted her head weakly and looked beyond Lumiere, she saw the transparent form of a Spiral, and she froze.

While Silver started to drift towards her, Coral couldn't move. The closer he came, the further Coral sank to her knees and wept. When Silver reached her, he gently pressed his forehead to hers and thought to her silently, quieting her cries.

He'd missed her so. He never stopped thinking of her...never stopped worrying about her...

More tears spilled from Coral's eyes. She remembered, one year ago, how Dewlap had shown her what had happened to Silver, but then she refused to believe it. But it had been true. She should have kept him closer, kept him safe...but she had failed him.

But Silver wasn't angry with her. He couldn't bear to be. And he promised to visit her each day, though he couldn't linger for long.

Coral shut her eyes tight and felt as though claws squeezed her heart, but she understood. Silver no longer belonged in this world, but he wasn't gone forever. She would see him again soon, and she looked into his eyes one more time before wishing him goodbye, and he gradually faded away, and vanished.

Continued from above & continued from Silver Part 2

All day she'd waited, the next day. Coral rarely conversed with other dragons, her thoughts only for one. She was anxious, barely touching any food that was brought to her.

She'd kept her distance from most dragons, especially her youngest brother Rockpools, knowing he didn't want to see her, and Redtide always kept himself between them. Coral could never ask them for forgiveness for what she did to Rocky just over twenty years ago: she'd controlled him with her magic to make him kill...because she had lost Silver, her Charge...but Rocky had made a new friend that same day, and it had driven her mad. She believed that she didn't deserve their forgiveness.

But now she was back home, and few dragons welcomed her or were willing to give her another chance. One was Dewlap, the old wizard. The very dragon that discovered and foiled her plans with Mudflat to keep her enchantments on Rocky a secret. Coral had fled with Mud, escaping across the vast and stormy Sea to the desert of the Shifting Expanse, where Mudflat became Glaw.

A year later, Dewlap and two other dragons had formed a rescue mission that took them to the very hideout where Mud and Coral resided. But there, her name was Breakingheart, and Mud had transformed himself into a monstrous Ridgeback and stole dozens of souls of other dragons, absorbing their memories in attempts to forget his own. But Coral...Breakingheart...never partook in those atrocious deeds that Mud—Glaw—and the henchdragons he'd gathered had committed. She could never forget Silver...how she failed him...nor could she bring herself to hurt any more dragons.

And she never would have expected that any dragons from the Seaside Clan would ever find her. She never could have imagined Dewlap willing to give her another chance and bring her back home. But she only agreed to return for Silver, and she was ready to accept any punishments awaiting her.

And Mud...after he stormed back to the island alone to confront Dewlap, the witch Marica had escaped her prison which Lumiere had kept her...and she killed him.

But Coral's punishments were not what she'd been expecting, either. King Kelpbeard and Queen Saline, her own father and mother, only took away some of her previous privileges, which some dragons protested, voicing that they weren't enough. Coral would no longer be next in line for the throne, which she accepted. She was stripped of all her magic, which she accepted. She had to be supervised at all times, which she accepted. And she would have to spend her nights in the dungeons, which she accepted.

The only times she was allowed to be alone were when she was escorted there to sleep, and when Silver came to visit her.

She waited for him now, in the dim, torch-lit basement. She'd been given a few of her pillows to sleep on so that she wouldn't be too uncomfortable, but she didn't use them, instead allowing the cold of the stone floor to seep through her paled scales.

She waited still. What if he didn't really want to see her, after the things she did? What if this was all just a trick and the other dragons were discussing more severe punishments for her? Could she accept never seeing Silver again?

She hung her head, sighing weakly...ready to accept it...

...until she saw a softly glowing shape...twisting towards her...

Silver? she thought, not daring to trust her voice, her eyes shining an stinging with fresh tears ready to fall.

The transparent form of a Spiral was clear to her now. He drifted closer, his eyes full of joy. He smiled, though he looked sad. When he reached her, he took one of her paws in both of his own.

I've missed you so much, Coral, Silver thought to her, gently.

Coral could hold the cascade of tears back no longer. She wept as she thought to him, I've missed you too, Silver...this is all my fault...I'm so sorry...

Silver sighed softly as he pressed his nose to hers. I thought Marica would help me...but I was a fool to trust her...I never should have left you.

Coral sniffled, remembering what Dewlap had shown her the night she and Mud fled the castle. Silver's memories that Dewlap had seen revealed the Spiral seeking out the witch named Marica in hopes that she'd free him from his perpetual chill...but the witch had stolen the Spiral's soul instead, keeping him trapped for twenty years until Dewlap had saved him.

As she gazed to Silver now, she saw the pale green light that pulsed from his chest to the tips of his horns and tail. His Spark...it was how she knew and felt that he was her Charge.

What I did to Rocky was still wrong, she thought to him.

I can talk to him for you, Silver thought back. Maybe he'll understand then.

Coral shook her head. He'll only think that I sent you. I don't want him to be angry with you, too...

Silver nuzzled her as more of her tears fell. It'll be okay, he hushed to her. He just needs more time. As do you...

He stayed with her a while longer, their thoughts now silenced by each other's presence. Coral's tears gradually ceased, and once they stopped, Silver nuzzled her again.

I have to go now, he thought quietly.

Coral nuzzled him back, as gently as she could, fearing she might hurt him. I know...I'll miss you... Tears threatened to spill again, but she held them back.

What did I promise? Silver asked with a smile.

She returned the gesture with her own smile, her jaw quivering. That you'll be back tomorrow. She knew he couldn't linger for too long, or else he'd be trapped. She couldn't let that happen to him. Not again.

And every night after that, the Spiral added softly. Good night, Coral, he wished her, taking a step back and starting to vanish.

“Good night...Silver...” Coral whispered just before he disappeared completely.

She could still see his gentle face...though he was no longer there.

The Guardian turned to curl up against her pillows, sinking into them. She sighed, shivering from the chill of the damp basement. But the knowledge of seeing him again filled her heart with warmth, and she soon drifted to sleep.

...

Five years later...

Somewhere, far from the comfort and serenity of the Seaside clan, a pale, feathered Wildclaw jolted awake and trembled as he sat alone in a dimly-lit room. The Wildclaw, Lumen, tried to move, but discovered he was bound tight in ropes, sitting in a chair.

By the Eleven, who had done this to him? Where was he now? What happened? Where was his family?

Frantic with fear, he looked around wildly, and his racing heart beat faster as his eyes adjusted. He struggled again, fighting against his bonds, but he froze when a voice hissed from a dark corner just ahead.

“You're not going anywhere, my friend,” the voice giggled madly. Something sharp glinted as the figure lifted it into the light. “Why don't you open your eyes niiiiiice and wide for me?”

Lumen screamed in terror.
